I literally only use plastic plates once a year... I'm Australian and it isn't normal to use that much plastic plates. Plastic cups are a little more common, but even then not much.
At My moms house we don't use paper plates because we can just wash the dishes so they are a waste of money. At my dads house we use regular plates for meals and paper plates or paper towels for snacks. I try not to but sometimes I'm lazy
0:20 "Zero-waste means trying to send as little as possible to landfill". Where I live (Sweden) only 0,5 % of the waste goes to landfills. 4:33 "Only 9 % of plastic actually gets recycled". Here it´s 44 %.
Reducing something is more effective than recycling it anyway though. Because recycling still has costs of transport, melting it down and using it again which all takes energy.
So...reusable plates eh? Like...regular plates? The ones you just have to get your ass up for once and clean afterwards instead of immediately throwing them away? This is seriously sad to watch.
It's amazing how many workplaces go straight for disposables, though. I use normal plates at home, but I go to the office and they provide lunch and it's all paper plates and plastic forks. THEY HAVE A DISHWASHER. I use their normal plates all the time! A lot of it is just disposable culture.
The thing is that regular plates and cutlery seem to be a huge deal to her. Don't know if that's all just made up or not but if it's not then something's going pretty wrong
Hey she’s trying. Its the way they were brought up, its the culture. Eating off the single use plates and eating with single use utensils is normal to them but shes making an effort. Not everybody’s environment is the same. Just because I didn’t grow up that way doesn’t mean I wouldn’t have if I lived in the US.

it kinda does. it has a lot to do with the general culture of black people. not so much anymore, but i've heard stories of people getting made fun of for wanting to go vegetarian. i'm not really sure why, but it's definitely a thing
AAL she actually said it’s “mostly for”, not only for white/rich/privileged - so she’s aware that there are POCs that are rich and privileged as well. In general though, her perspective isn’t too far off base. Considering food deserts mainly are located in communities of color, zero waste isn’t an option for many non-white people. They don’t even have access to grocery stores, produce, clean water. So they don’t have the option to buy bulk items, avoid plastic, etc.
How is being environmentally friendly for the rich, you buy 1 reusable straw, cup, and just use a regular plate... and as far as diet goes, beans and rice is so cheap and very environmentally friendly 👌
Here are some of the ways I reduce waste. - I bring my yeti bottle everywhere - I leave reusable cups at my work - always keep a compact reusable bag on me - I carry utensils in my bag - I always have a regular straw and boba straw in my bag - I leave a laundry basket in my car to carry groceries in place of bagging everything - I use lush packaging free products - I use cloth cotton rounds for toner and makeup remover

I’d just like to say that sustainability wouldn’t require millions of people doing zero waste perfectly but rather millions of people doing it imperfectly. I related w/ her when she mentioned feeling powerless when coming f2f w/ environmental issues but if we all do our parts how little they may be, sustainability is attainable!
peachiplum being environmentally aware is typically only seen in developed country’s and places with better education . In many Poor country’s its not even a topic.
I understand your dismay, but I think that a very crucial aspect of the zero waste movement is that because it is not widespread at the moment, access to bulk food stores and the ability to reach the areas where these food stores are located very much depends on socioeconomic status. That might not always be demarcated by race, but in America we cannot divide the zero waste movement from the economic oppression so often faced by people of color. We do share this planet, and it should be a greater priority for each of us to consider, however it is also crucial to consider first the pressing situations of poverty. Bless up 🙏
One thing I've heard said a lot is that it would be better if a lot of people did "zero waste" or "low waste" imperfectly rather than just a few people doing "zero waste" perfectly. Lots of people making small changes and constant effort is better. I'm not always good about bringing reusable bags to the grocery store (I need to get better about that), but one thing I've gotten very good at is bringing my lunch to work in all reusable containers (glass food containers, mason jars, and beeswax wrappers). I always bring a cloth napkin (which is now my preference over disposable) and my own cutlery. I also bring a metal beverage container that holds my hot coffee in the morning, but then I rinse out with soap and water and use for ice water for the rest of the day so I don't have to use disposable cups at work. The ticket in the video reminded me of a week recently when I had to commute by train a lot, and I used their app for the first time so I didn't have to fiddle with paper tickets... I'm not realizing that that's also zero/low waste! :)
I really like how they went about this video of having her collect her trash first and then talk about exactly where her issues with waste are and then presenting her the challenge of just going zero waste for a day
I love to see that people are interested in zero waste. People come from very different backgrounds ( including culture/ race, etc). I am Hispanic and in my family, when I grew up- recycling has never been a topic or a concern. So, now that I'm an adult ( lol, "adult"), and zero waste awareness is more out there- I find myself trying to make better choices for our earth. I'm not perfect at it yet, but I know I'm trying. Thanks, girls for doing this video!
If there's too much food on it, it cannot be recycled. That's why you wash your Taco Bell cups before recycle and don't recycle pizza boxes even though they are cardboard. You can also chuck aluminum aerosol cans like air fresheners, hairspray, and shaving cream in the recycling bin. It's also helpful to check with the company that takes your recycling. They usually have guidelines.
@@BlakRainbow39 my local recycling company doesn't take aerosols cans and any other plastic besides 1 and 2. Taco bell and most other fast food cups are number 5, so I can't recycle those. It's better to just use a reusable cup, some people give me strange looks but they usually fill it for me. Always check your local recycling company's guidelines.
It depends. Technically you don't for glass and metal but many recyclers just expect that anyway and reject the dirty stuff. But to give you an idea of how clean most plastics need to be to recycle. Plastic WATER bottles go through three cleaning cycles before being turned into resin beads. Any food packaging or condiment bottle isn't going to recycle unless you washing it completely.
OMG Auri is so smol? She is like a little trash elf. Thank you for teaching us about trash, trash elf! Thanks, Joyce for bringing POC visibility to the Zero Waste movement.
My city has a 7 step waste program so most people here strive to be as trash free as possible. In fact each house is only allowed (i think) 6 trash bags in a 2 week period. The rest is divided up into compost, cardboard, newspapers, recycling, house hold special waste (chemicals, batteries, paint, leftover motor oil etc) which is taken to a special depot, electronics which are taken to another depot, wood and large items such as appliances and furniture. Its really easy to be consciously trash free!
Such a good video! I love these changes and would LOVE to see Buzzfeed put more time, money and energy on sustainability and resources to help them manage it. Ari is a crucial part of Buzzfeed and I seriously want to see more kinds of her. Seems like Joyce is the next one!
When it comes to periods, switch to a cup or cloth pads. It's something that gets overlooked and periods create A LOT of waste over the years. Try using a bamboo toothbrush (they're compostable!) or an electric one if you're not already using one. I highly recommend a Sodastream if you drink a lot of soft drinks. I have one and gave my mom one. They cut down on costs sooooo much!! Plus the bottles you use to carbonate are recyclable in a few years of use. I only buy soap from Lush and store soap bars in their steel tins. Also - you can get foldable cutlery and straws to keep on you that don't take up much space. Ditch makeup wipes and try the Makeup Eraser or Erase Your Face cloths. Use reusable canvas or cotton bags for shopping instead of taking plastic bags. Learn to say "no straw, thanks!" in restaurants. Reusable coffee travel mugs and water bottles are a must. Try a stainless steel safety razor for shaving instead of those expensive disposables. These are easy, cheap swaps that anyone can do. Use what you have until it wears out and then purchase a zero waste option.

Joyce is literally my favorite person I’ve watched on buzzfeed
Girl that BTS merch! YYYAAASSSS! We love an Army Queen👑😂💜👏🏻
do u get the point of the video tho
Whats army?
Yes we do
bbygrlpt2 it’s kinda like an army and they love BTS and protect them at like any cost 😅
@@bbygrlpt2 the name of bts fans, BTS Army ☺
I’d just like to say that sustainability wouldn’t require millions of people doing zero waste perfectly but rather millions of people doing it imperfectly.
I related w/ her when she mentioned feeling powerless when coming f2f w/ environmental issues but if we all do our parts how little they may be, sustainability is attainable!
Nobody:
Literally nobody:
Army’s (including me): OMG I LOVE YOUR SHIRT💜
tata_ who lol same
I finally FOUND someone about the shirt of BTS 🙃🙃
that's the only thing i've been thinking about for the whole video 😅
Love this! She did a great job!!!! A great way to display making less waste without changing your lifestyle too much 💚
sis lost me when she said that being 0 waste is for the "white, the rich and the privileged" 💀💀💀💀 it's about helping the damn planet not race
👏
peachiplum being environmentally aware is typically only seen in developed country’s and places with better education .
Bless up 🙏
Yes thank you
Agreed.
Joyce is so adorable! Protect this smol bean at all costs ☺️
1:24 shes using airpods and headphones at the same time lol and also love the sweatshirt
This has nothing to did with the video, but how tall is Joyce??!!
Following
Lacey Kean you Fr?!?
Lacey Kean where did you hear this? And why would being trans mean she’d be 6’5? The average American man is 5’9, so that’s a weird connection to make
Me Me nah she’s not transgender
Joyce is my niece and she is not transgender. She is a woman. She's tall because her dad is super tall. That's it.
I really like how they went about this video of having her collect her trash first and then talk about exactly where her issues with waste are and then presenting her the challenge of just going zero waste for a day
“...so i got half a bag of trash right now, which is lit”
I love to see that people are interested in zero waste. People come from very different backgrounds ( including culture/ race, etc). I am Hispanic and in my family, when I grew up- recycling has never been a topic or a concern. So, now that I'm an adult ( lol, "adult"), and zero waste awareness is more out there- I find myself trying to make better choices for our earth. I'm not perfect at it yet, but I know I'm trying. Thanks, girls for doing this video!
"reusable plate" ... thats a regular plate. i forgot how many people use paper plates and plastic utensils daily. i never used those growing up
Love the zero waste push but can I also say I’m obsessed with her gorgeous pink crop top look 👏🏼💕
Yay! Joyce! I gave up straws and carry a reusable water bottle. I didn’t realize I needed to clean my recycling 🤦🏾♀️
Ms neither I used to drink about 8 water bottles of plastic a day
@@BlakRainbow39 my local recycling company doesn't take aerosols cans and any other plastic besides 1 and 2.
Love the zero waste series! Keep it coming Buzzfeed! 💚
YALL ARE SO CUTE yas sustainability! I bring my own bags to the grocery store and am vegan to minimized my carbon footprint :)
OMG Auri is so smol? She is like a little trash elf. Thank you for teaching us about trash, trash elf! Thanks, Joyce for bringing POC visibility to the Zero Waste movement.
Food waste actually impacts the environment a lot. Maybe you can try to make zero food waste? Btw I love this vid 🙂
its called compost and it helps soil
OMG! Jazz and Joyce in one video... I LOVE YOU BOTH!!!!
Joyce is wearing a BTS shirt
Quinta is wearing an ARMY shirt
What else??😂😂
“no one told me about this i was just thirsty” 😭😭i feel you jazz
I was like wait is that bts merch QUEEN YES SUPPORT
My city has a 7 step waste program so most people here strive to be as trash free as possible. In fact each house is only allowed (i think) 6 trash bags in a 2 week period. The rest is divided up into compost, cardboard, newspapers, recycling, house hold special waste (chemicals, batteries, paint, leftover motor oil etc) which is taken to a special depot, electronics which are taken to another depot, wood and large items such as appliances and furniture. Its really easy to be consciously trash free!
Me: *sees thumbnail* Is that BTS on her shirt ?
*clicks*
Me: THATS BTS ON HER SHIRT 💜 also im interested. In the concept and saving the earth
I’m so excited to see her zero waste journey 😄
The BTS Shirt is bangin!!! No🧢
Such a good video! I love these changes and would LOVE to see Buzzfeed put more time, money and energy on sustainability and resources to help them manage it. Ari is a crucial part of Buzzfeed and I seriously want to see more kinds of her. Seems like Joyce is the next one!

Love the concept. Good job Joyce!
