Today I'm AGAIN comparing cities: This time we are comparing Bangkok and Kuala Lumpur.
Which city is better and why? Where would I rather live? Which one should you consider?
As you probably already know, I'm a HUGE fan of Asia. I think that Asia is the future, and if you care about building in life this is a good place to be.
I love both Singapore and Hong Kong - they're amazing for business, and they're great places to visit. However, they're extremely expensive, and most ex-pats wouldn't consider them for a living. That's why places like Bangkok and Kuala Lumpur get more attention. They are amazing developed cities, with great weather, but without insane costs.
There is an expression that says: Do business in Singapore, live in Kuala Lumpur, party in Bangkok.
Kuala Lumpur, the capital of Malaysia is a fantastic city. I already talked about how much I appreciate this place, and I believe it is the best quality of life for every dollar spent. The downtown area is extremely clean and polished, and it looks very modern and cosmopolitan.
Bangkok is very different in many ways from KL. I have a love-hate relationship with Bangkok. Bangkok offers many things that are the best in the world: Best cinemas in the world, best groceries in the world, fancy rooftop bars, luxury hotels, and restaurants, fancy shopping malls. BUT then you step on the street and it's a chaotic mess.
What about costs? Well, the reality is that Thailand is not as cheap as it used to be. If you want to live a low-key lifestyle you can still get away without paying insane prices, but if you're looking for quality that doesn't come cheap. In that regard, Kuala Lumpur is definitely cheaper than Bangkok.
Renting or buying property and shopping is all certainly better priced in KL.
However, Bangkok offers so much - this place has been a tourist hub for so long and it had so much time to develop. Once I've heard someone saying ''no matter what you're looking for, you can find it in Bangkok''. If you're into partying Bangkok is certainly a better place to be, maybe even among the best in the world.
Kuala Lumpur, on the other hand, is a more calm, family oriented city. It doesn't have the same feel of craziness as Bangkok does.
    What about visas?
Thailand offers a Thai Elite Visa, which is probably the world's greatest visa. You pay a fee of about $3000, and this includes VIP lane at the airport, being picked up at the airport and dropped off, it even includes massages!
Malaysian visa is not so easy to get, but it's not hard either. The most famous program was named ''Malaysia my second home'', but this was closed in early 2020. It will probably be reopened. At the moment you can get a Labuan director visa or a Tech Entrepreneur Visa.

Kuala Lumpur is like this perfectly balanced city that is just nice for you to settle in with your family, but also without forgoing the good parts of the city life. It's like KL still have that charm of a nostalgic, old town rich with culture and history, but also with modernity at every junction. It's the perfect marriage between the traditional and the modern world, with generous green patches of nature in between. Just make sure you respect the local culture, people and norms here, and don't get stuck inside the rush hours, then you'll enjoy your stay here.

I would use the territorial tax arrangements and live long-term in Malaysia - when MM2H restarts. Reasons... nice, friendly people generally, English is widely spoken, wonderful food, a good level of infrastructure (roads, internet, malls, etc.), international hub - KL, some nice beaches, good value for money, interesting architecture, Georgetown Penang UNESCO world heritage site, Borneo forests, and nature. Alcohol is heavily taxed but I'm not a heavy drinker...often! NB: They seem to like polite British people - which greatly adds to our decision. Malaysia is a muslim friendly country in the world. No one can denied that. Can find halal food (not only halal but delicious too) almost everywhere, easy to find mosque/musolla, water is everywhere for washroom and ablution etc. And at the same time it's not too strict (religiously), you still can have fun and good times there and see cultural diversity where you can see mosques, churches and temples were built side by side and the preachers can openly preach their own religion without any problems and all the races live peacefully amongst each other (no races riot). Where could you find these kind of thing anywhere in the world? 🤷

Dubai. It's more interesting over there. I am from Kl, but it's a reserved city. More conservative. If you are old and in the midst of retirement, Kl might be fine for you but if you are young and passionate Dubai is the answer.

But bangkok is great if you want more social activites and journey. Both are fantastic place. Dont worry. We are neighbouring country. For me, Just take 1 hour to arrive at border. Hehe.. But your maybe have to take a flight ticket and its take maybe 2 hour to arrive bangkok... Btw, good comparison and have a nice info... I've lived in Bangkok and now live in Kuala Lumpur. KL is definitely the easier city for English speakers to live in. Bangkok is 4 times the size of KL and it's amazing to explore, but takes more effort. Everyone who settles in Bangkok long term either learns Thai or has a strong connection e.g. gets married or has family there.

The population and size of BKK are much larger than KL. These factors, good or bad, likely put more weights on some of your points mentioned, eg, bigger malls, more demand & supply, more congested/chaotic/dirty city like BKK. Therefore, I’d personally prefer a more orderly/organised/cleaner KL

What I find amazing in all these vlogs and the comments below is that nobody talks about how easy it is to integrate. Whether it’s locals or a large community. It’s fine to know about the cleanliness and the supermarket but I wanna make sure I am not gonna end up ultra lonely and sad in this place

    • @OffshoreCitizen
      @OffshoreCitizen  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

This is a fantastic point. In my opinion this also depends lots on the person, some people can integrate almost anywhere, while for others it's harder.
From my experience both of these cities are expat friendly, especially Bangkok. Lots of foreigners from all over the world, and amazing welcoming locals.
Some cultures are certainly harder to blend in, but from my experience Southeast Asia is very good in that regard.
