      It would be hard to select for the gene over time. Like he said these plants wouldn't survive without human intervention. After a while I fell like transposons or mutations would just deactivate the gene, effectively stopping the glowing phenotype. Especially if it was a short living or annual grass.

    Actually, bioluminescent plants DO exist in nature, there's algae that glows as well as some animals...

    • @theGreaterAwareness
      @theGreaterAwareness 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      His comment doesn't say that algae is a plant. He says there are plants. Then he says there is algae. Then he says there are some animals. Why is this so? He never uses correct sentence structure to say that the algae is an example of a plant. If his sentence DID mean what you think it means then that would mean he is saying animals are plants and clearly that is not so - therefore the algae is not using that grammar either.
      So, great advice about the Algae but your comment is an addition and not a correction - therefore you don't need to say 'Actually' because you are not correcting anything.

    • @theGreaterAwareness
      @theGreaterAwareness 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      You're fine. You're probably not overly critical like me but your comment focused on correcting rather than understanding.
      Afterall, there are 12 other people that read his sentence the same as you. I'm perhaps being a nuisance due to my lack of social skills and so with my intent on opening your awareness that he didn't actually make a mistake - I probably came across as an A'hole. That's my life story.
      Correcting people is fine, just be aware of the eternal pattern where we each help each other realize what we didn't / couldn't see from our previous perspective on reality.
      And I have Asperger's so that will answer your question as to why I wrote such a surprising comment. I am overly critical and I it's an endless obstacle for me to overcome that.
      I apologize if I came across as rude, I honestly don't mean to do that but my brain doesn't see the way I talk as rude and so that's why I get classed as disabled.

    They're getting closer, I guess that's the point I wanted to make.

    • @ashleypascale9882
      @ashleypascale9882 9 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      No. That is not how bioluminescent plants work. Photosynthesis needs the energy from the sun to be absorbed. Cold light, as bioluminescence is, won't work because it doesn't hold enough energy. It's a different kind of light. --biology teacher in training.

      Not sure if it's them bud found on like Ebay or Amazon that you could bid on individual tobacco plants. Each plant had like it's own photo of how much it glowed and that seems unlikely to be ongoing for a scam, for so little money per plant, for such a long time without any bad reviews.. Getting actual glowing plants is easier...
      I was interested in getting a cheap low-glowing one to have next to my bed so that I could read a book or do some soduko instead of illuminating it with a 10+ old laptop sceen (It's not that bright anymore and gotten somewhat yellow-ish thu doesn't hurt my eyes in the dark).

    energy is not "produced" in plants. They are simply converted. The plants absorb sunlight, water & CO2, and store the energy in molecules as chemical energy (glucose, ATP, etc). When and as needed, those molecules are oxidised to give energy. Typically plants use that energy for vital processes (metabolism, growth, etc). But in this case part of the energy is being converted to light. So if the spaceship is able to get some type of energy source (like sunlight) your idea may work. Otherwise not.

      Draden Merenox They don't evolve fast enough to adapt to any of the other horrible things that humans do, not that this is horrible per say. I don't know how big of an impact these plants would have on the survivability of night time predators, but I do doubt that animals will be able to evolve to keep up with the problem.

      John Edwards actually, I have seen a vid on how a certain type of swallow evolved shorter wingspans to dodge traffic on a highway. So... I'd say that if a species of animal can evolve that fast, then I predict that the animals effected by the plant will be able to evolve quick enough to avoid being harmed by it.

    I don't really understand one thing. It sounds like you take a plant and then make it glow. But plats consists of so many cells and this luminicens have to get into every cell to make the plant glow like that. Do they really take a plant and make it glow or do they take plantcells, insert the glow gene and then make the cell grow into a plant?

    How would these plants do in a mainly overcast environment? For example, I live in Alberta, Canada and here we can sometimes get overcast weather for 10 months of the year, very little sunlight would get through to the plants. Would one be able to create a plant efficient enough to glow brightly in these conditions?

  • @ziknik7795

    if the bioluminesence of the plant consumes more energy from the cells could they possibly figure out a way to insert genes that up the amount of energy produced by the plant and also this would be an interesting system to use im spaceships if the walls were coated in algae like this you would not only have light but you could also make algae that produced oxygen at the same time just a thought

    interesting... but most algae need light to survive. and those lights would probably be more efficient than using the algae themselves as light. (some LED tech are getting crazy efficient now). and If i recall correctly the reaction needed to produce light with luciferase uses some oxygen as well.

    Many lights have a housing that directs light in a needed direction, and blocks light from direct viewing. A large tree may distribute light in every direction and blind drivers.
