Over the years, drummer Youkyung has uploaded lots of drum covers on her TH-cam channel, You’s Drum, of both k-pop and non-k-pop songs. After her solo album, her output stopped for quite a while, but it seems like she’s gotten back into the rhythm (pun intended) this past year.
The band is mainly AOA Black members. youkyung only drums so besides their debut era you only saw her with AOA black. FNC only had two bands before debuting AOA so they did a fusion dance/band group for them but the band concept fizzled out early on and she left the group. Generations is hard because while they do have a more 2nd gen vibe early on they actually debuted after all of the founding fathers of gen 3 (BAP, BTOB, Nu’est and EXO) girl groups for gen 3 get classified more as gen 3 later on so EXID and AOA are in a weird gen2/gen3 bubble.
Just want to make things clear in the comments, because getting into this group likely means you're going to hear a lot of things, but Mina's bullying allegations against Jimin were later proven to have been either entirely fabricated or at the most generous, largely exaggerated. While Mina clearly has had ongoing mental health issues for some time and I do hope she gets help, it is still no excuse for what she did to Jimin. She destroyed Jimin's life, ruined everything she had worked so hard to build and tried to drag the other members of AOA down with her. I'm glad that Jimin has been able to return to the industry, even if it's only been in a few small ways, she spent nearly two years in hiding due to Mina's accusations- but she's received nowhere near the amount of support she deserves. She's honestly one of the best female rappers the K-Pop industry has ever produced, the fact she was so quickly forgotten is a travesty.

AOA during their Prime is one the best in terms of discography. They do sexy concepts with grace and poise. Their band concept is also the best as FNC is known to produce bands. AOA's music is one of sounds I miss these days, you can already identify an AOA song within the first seconds of the songs.

"Groups today would never" see, its not simply a matter of if they would its just that they shouldnt because theyre mostly minors and that would be so wrong, you cant expect them to present themselves in such ways, and the thing is, back in the day there were minors among the groups that would attempt sexy concepts and many have come foward and revealed that they had been forced and exploited sexually while being obviously uncomfortable. So I really wouldnt say one is better than the other beacuse of the consequences of both, but i do miss more grown woman expressing their sexuality freely and this type of sound(btw there still are certain idols doing so like mamamoo and more recently kiss of life) p.s. it doesnt have to be explicitly erotic with close up shots of certain body parts for it to be sexy

👍for AOA! 2nd & early 3rd gen were really doing some sexy things. Some of these shots are questionable by today's standards. But that's probably the reason why I started with kpop at the first place.😉 CHOA (blonde short hair) was my first crush in kpop back in 2017. My favotite releases are the double title tracks Bing Bing & Excuse Me (unfortunately the last ones with the full group). It's a shame that there was so much drama surrounding the group at the end. Can't wait for more.
I just wanna point that especially earlier on Blond Bob Legend Choa basically sang everybody’s lines or was at least the backing track for them. In confused Seolhyuns lines are entirely Choa(the chorus lines with brown hair girl in center) and in Elvis most of the vocal parts are the member singing it and Choa layered together it slowly gets better over time but yeah.
AOA black unit was a band, that's why some of them have instruments listed. Youkyoung was only in AOA black, not in main unit of AOA. Aoa had a lot of ups and downs throughout their career, a lot of it having to do with fnc not having experience managing a regular kpop group. They had lost a lot of popularity after choa left (not surprising considering how sekualized she was) and had slowed down on group promotions. They went on Queendom and did fairly well. The next summer after Queendom and a new album release, former member Mina accused Jimin of bullying and mental abu$e which ofc everyone believed. She kept changing her stories, posting graphic pics of her self harm blaming it on jimin, and changing between blaming just jimin to blaming all the members. It eventually came out that all her stories were bs and she had been very difficult to work with throughout her career. But by the time the truth came out, aoa was pretty much over thanks to Mina. From what I know Chan I has changed her name to dohwa and was on Queendom puzzle..not sure what she's done since then though. Seolhyun does acting and show appearances. Yuna, choa, and jimin have all released some solo music, but not really in the kpop realm. Youkyung is in a band called UNI. It would be wonderful if at least the 5 that were left before the Mina issue happened came back together, but I really have no expectations for it 😔

Fandom names of the early FNC groups used to come from their songs. FT Island had a song called Primadonna in their debut album. It sounded nice and meaningful to go with that name for their fandom. Cnblue's fandom name is also coming from a pre-debut song called "Voice" (v and b sounds same in Korean so it's became Boice) So i think it became a tradition in the company singe then. That's why they wanted to the same thing for AOA as well. But they didn't debut with an album unlike FT Island and Cnblue. They didn't have many songs yet. The only song they had will sound good and make sense as a fandom name was Elvis 😄

aoa black was the band unit, the song to look for is "moya". aoa white never had any songs, theyre just the members who arent in black (thought i assume they were supposed to get a song and it was scrapped?). the song for aoa cream is "I'm jelly baby" (which i adooore)(theyre the unit of the type that a lot of girl groups used to do following orange caramel, but i ate it up everytime). their concept is on the weird side to explain, like exo but if the company randomly gave up on it without really trying. theyre angels, except youkyung was only half because she was only in the band. originally they were "7+1" rather than 8 members~ i love elvis so much its such a good debut~ youre certainly missing a few big iconic ones that i assume youll get to next time, but i must say, i looooooooove bingle bangle and her bsides the member seolhyun is pretty popular as an actress (shes in "memoir of a murder" for example. a more recent drama would be "summer strike") too if she looks familiar

I very much agree then, i do miss groups willingly and confidently doing more risqué and mature concepts, its just as you said this is a very sensitive and complex topic and felt the need to share my two cents but there are too many factors at play(companies, audiences, the idols themselves..)

👍for AOA! 2nd & early 3rd gen were really doing some sexy things. Some of these shots are questionable by today's standards. But that's probably the reason why I started with kpop at the first place.😉
CHOA (blonde short hair) was my first crush in kpop back in 2017. My favotite releases are the double title tracks Bing Bing & Excuse Me (unfortunately the last ones with the full group).
It's a shame that there was so much drama surrounding the group at the end.

I just wanna point that especially earlier on Blond Bob Legend Choa basically sang everybody’s lines or was at least the backing track for them. In confused Seolhyuns lines are entirely Choa(the chorus lines with brown hair girl in center) and in Elvis most of the vocal parts are the member singing it and Choa layered together it slowly gets better over time but yeah.
AOA black unit was a band, that's why some of them have instruments listed. Youkyoung was only in AOA black, not in main unit of AOA. Aoa had a lot of ups and downs throughout their career, a lot of it having to do with fnc not having experience managing a regular kpop group. They had lost a lot of popularity after choa left (not surprising considering how sekualized she was) and had slowed down on group promotions. They went on Queendom and did fairly well.
The next summer after Queendom and a new album release, former member Mina accused Jimin of bullying and mental abu$e which ofc everyone believed. She kept changing her stories, posting graphic pics of her self harm blaming it on jimin, and changing between blaming just jimin to blaming all the members. It eventually came out that all her stories were bs and she had been very difficult to work with throughout her career. But by the time the truth came out, aoa was pretty much over thanks to Mina.
From what I know Chan I has changed her name to dohwa and was on Queendom puzzle..not sure what she's done since then though. Seolhyun does acting and show appearances. Yuna, choa, and jimin have all released some solo music, but not really in the kpop realm. Youkyung is in a band called UNI. It would be wonderful if at least the 5 that were left before the Mina issue happened came back together, but I really have no expectations for it 😔

I listened to a tiny bit of K-Pop in the early 2000s but AOA is the group that pulled me back in 2014 with their song Short Hair. Thank you for reacting to my favorite girl group! ChoA is my ultimate bias ❤

Fandom names of the early FNC groups used to come from their songs. FT Island had a song called Primadonna in their debut album. It sounded nice and meaningful to go with that name for their fandom. Cnblue's fandom name is also coming from a pre-debut song called "Voice" (v and b sounds same in Korean so it's became Boice) So i think it became a tradition in the company singe then. That's why they wanted to the same thing for AOA as well. But they didn't debut with an album unlike FT Island and Cnblue. They didn't have many songs yet. The only song they had will sound good and make sense as a fandom name was Elvis 😄

if you liked the band stuff from elvis, i recommend checking out stuff from aoa black, their short-lived band subunit. i always loved MOYA back when aoa started getting more popular internationally w/ miniskirt, and i feel like it's been forgotten to time along with their abandonment of the band concept lol. everyone else in the comments has listed all the hits to check out, but you seemed to enjoy the bandy stuff so it might be fun to check out the other few times they did the band thing!

aoa black was the band unit, the song to look for is "moya". aoa white never had any songs, theyre just the members who arent in black (thought i assume they were supposed to get a song and it was scrapped?). the song for aoa cream is "I'm jelly baby" (which i adooore)(theyre the unit of the type that a lot of girl groups used to do following orange caramel, but i ate it up everytime). their concept is on the weird side to explain, like exo but if the company randomly gave up on it without really trying. theyre angels, except youkyung was only half because she was only in the band. originally they were "7+1" rather than 8 members~

So I'm not a huge fan of AOA but I love Heart Attack! It was my first girl group song and it's just so fun and energetic!
