This is probably my favorite '70's tune. You get two piano solos, two guitar solos, two sax solos, great vocal harmonies, great lyrics, great rhythym guitar, great drumming, the bassist is right on! What more could you ask for...
I just want to say that this is one of the very few songs that never ever sounds old. It still sounds fresh after all these years. Just a timeless classic!
Notice how lush the instrumentation of this song is: first the piano solo, then all the guitars, then the tenor sax and the tinkling keyboard. And yet the vocals are never lost; you can discern every word. Magic...
I heard this song for the first time in the winter of 1977 when I was 14. I absolutely loved it and the reason why was what you mentioned - lush instrumentation. The lyrics were also engaging and painted detailed pictures in my mind. A classic song for the ages.
I think what makes the song cool is that they each get a chance to "speak" through a little snippet of soloing, and the guitar players, the sax player, the pianist and the key player each have a different technique, yet it all blends beautifully.
In the late fall of 1976 I arrived at NAS Oceana, Virginia to start my Navy career. In each bar in Virginia Beach this song was playing. I remember the late bus rides back to base, my first taste of the ocean and seeing my life all ahead of me. So whenever I need to go back I listen to Al's song and I'm immediately back to that time and place agian.
I would advise any young person interested in the second world war to listen to "Roads to Moscow" by this artist. Moving lyrics, great music and a history lesson all in one.
Jim Peluso I am 21 and I have listened to "Roads to Moscow" countless times. Great lyrics, great song writing, a great history lesson and a perfect combination of instruments (especially the guitar). A jewel for everyone who enjoys good music and every history fan.
Met Al Stewart today on a BA flight. A gentleman.. Talked music for a few minutes. Never even knew who he was....I was in the midst of folk and rock coolness
She comes out of the sun in a silk dress running like a watercolor in the rain. Don't bother asking for explanations she'll just tell you that she came. Just magnificent and that sax something else. This is the best version I’ve heard.
I wish I had been there. His talent is like no other, I'd recognize an Al Stewart song immediately even if I've never heard it before. This is the song of my nostalgia, oh the memories.
A true master piece; I love every thing about this song: poetic lyrics, sensational melody , gifted instrumentalists, beautiful Scottish vocalist Al Stewart. I first listened to this song in 1976; and now 2023, on the new year day of the year of the Cat in Vietnamese astrology. Still love listening to this song over and over again
Can't wait to see Al perform the 'Year of the Cat' album in its entirety at the Royal Albert Hall on 15 October. My husband, incidentally, worked on this 'Whistle Test' when he was a Studio Cameraman with the BBC at Television Centre in the 70's.
1st time I've seen this version - a beautiful song that takes me back to Korea when I was stationed at Camp Humphreys 1977-1978 and times there. This song is kind of the background music of memories of being there. Really had to be there in 1977 at that country world that turned back time.
Indeed it's a wonderful song especially the saxophone solo. i LOVE 70s and 80s. a friend below said that , they don't produce songs anymore in nowadays and i agree with that.
As I'm watching this video, I'm mesmerized by those blessed, busy hands. So many talented musicians pulling together to bring this masterpiece off. It's a rare thing now a days to be able to spend the time to develop a deep plot lyrically and flesh out the musical arrangement of this caliber for modern radio audiences. Many listeners have much shorter attention spans than they used to. I guess it's not much different than what's happened in the film industry. Anyway,. brilliant work on a timeless classic, many thanks and much respect to Al Stewart and Company, I grew up in the Seventies listening to their music and now my kids do too..
I remember the night this played on BBC!!..I was hooked, not on Al but the romance behind this song.. This has to be one of the tightest bands ever, so in tune with each other...
Great song! Has a melancolic melody... great musicians A soft keyboard solo followed by a melodic acoustic guitar solo followed by a perfect electric guitar solo and ends with a terrific sax solo simply awesome ,just the great Al stewart made it possible...!
pleasure then.. pleasure now.. enjoyed this when it was new and I young.. still enjoying this.. even when I am now what some say.. old.. it been said.. things get better with age.. this is an example of ageing with grace.. play on Al.. your music keeps me young.. (God Bless)..
In 78-79 I was in graduate school when this song surfaced unto the airwaves. This incredible tune is embedded in my memories of that time as it is the cornerstone of all the good and great things that happened during that time. School good be taxing and monotonous but this song reminds me of all the good feelings I experiences such as an intense love I had and shared. I love this song and feel that Stewart is one of the most underrated artists of our time. This live performance is perfect.
Al Stewart is one of the most underrated singer/songwriter of our generation. This guy is a musical genius with his beautiful and always classy lyrics. What a beatiful line "She comes out of the sun in a silk dress running like a watercolour in the rain." Wow!!!! Just gorgeous!!! Unfortunately I've never gone to one of his live shows, but it definitely is one of the things on my bucket list!!!!
This brings me back to the days when all of us had beautiful, long flowing hair. Bone structure to die for. What an amazing voice! What a cutie! I'd take his arm in mine!
I heard Al perform this at the Royal Albert Hall last night. And, before doing so, he announced that the girlfriend who inspired this song ... was in the audience! Then when the now-extended saxophone solo began towards the end, the saxophonist, who was using a radio mike, was suddenly spotlighted in the middle of the audience, (I think) serenading her! It was a lovely romantic gesture.
Jacqui Crawford Hey Jacqui, Hope you are enjoying being home. Its been hell here the last few days, seems like everything breaks down at once. Maybe when I get caught up, we can get back to having fun,I miss that, and the music....
W. L. Higdon He will....yes enjoying being reunited with family friends and my gorgeous pooch...not liking the cooler climate tho. Sure buddy....we can get back to some fun stuff on hangouts and I'm always posting music...take care and keep calm....
I really miss these days. The songs told stories you had to interpret and MAN this song is so instrumental with the piano, Sax, guitar, keyboards, and anything else I may have left out.
don't kill me anyone. Year of the cat is one of the reasons why England and Scotland should remain united. Beautiful song written by a Scotsman speaking English with a beautiful Scottish accent. Masterpiece ps Englishman living abroad
believe or not ..I am from El Salvador, back in time I was in high school, about 17 years old,and I did not the meaning of the lyrics.....But now I been in the USA for the las 25 years,I know the meaning and I LOVE IT!!!!!! This is my favorite song ever!!!!
I loved his accent as he sang. It made him seem illegit yet significant. I felt as if the song had some indellible meaning I couldn't understand, yet as a boy I didn't quite know why I loved this tune so much.

I was living abroad in Amsterdam when this song came out. Everytime I hear this song a long slow smile comes to my face as I remember the absolute best times of my life. Thank you Al Stewart for the wonderful memories your song conjures up for me.
Great musicianship just across the board . Man what happened to music like this. Catchy melody great song structure and soft vocals. All leading up to a heavy Sax solo back down to the melody and that echoing keyboard riff simply magic.
My HS years were 76-80 and we did take music for granted, there were so many great artist and real rock and roll bands that a new album was out every other week.I remember when THE WALL came out from Pink Floyd, no big deal but what a classic. Master Musicians, Al is a musical genius, very beautiful piece of music
I just want to say that this is one of the very few songs that never ever sounds old. It still sounds fresh after all these years. Just a timeless classic!
I agree❤! It's a beautiful wonderful song!
Musical perfection, Master Musicians

2023 - still playing it- still loving it - timeless masterpiece
I think what makes the song cool is that they each get a chance to "speak" through a little snippet of soloing, and the guitar players, the sax player, the pianist and the key player each have a different technique, yet it all blends beautifully.
Don’t forget about the amazing voice delivering those lyrics
This is the best video and song I have seen on TH-cam among the tens of thousands, musical perfection from Master Musicians
Some things never get old. This song is a good example of that
In the late fall of 1976 I arrived at NAS Oceana, Virginia to start my Navy career. In each bar in Virginia Beach this song was playing. I remember the late bus rides back to base, my first taste of the ocean and seeing my life all ahead of me. exactly my same experience except I arrived there 10 yrs before yours..
The most underrated POET songwriter of my generation.
I would advise any young person interested in the second world war to listen to "Roads to Moscow" by this artist. Moving lyrics, great music and a history lesson all in one.
Jim Peluso
I am 21 and I have listened to "Roads to Moscow" countless times.
Great lyrics, great song writing, a great history lesson and a perfect combination of instruments (especially the guitar). A jewel for everyone who enjoys good music and every history fan.

Met Al Stewart today on a BA flight. A gentleman.. Talked music for a few minutes. Never even knew who he was....I was in the midst of folk and rock coolness
great song...perhaps Al Stewart's best tune!!!
thanks James-Joie'
The way this song moves from powerfull piano to guitar to sax is awesome. The instrumentals are so great. There's nothing even close today.
She comes out of the sun in a silk dress running like a watercolor in the rain.
Don't bother asking for explanations she'll just tell you that she came. Just magnificent and that sax something else. This is the best version I’ve heard.
I usually like studio versions as a rule. When I came across this I was blown away. The piano playing is amazing !!!
The guitar & sax work ain't to shabby either!
***** Do you play an instrument? I sing I need someone who plays guitar to back me up on From the Beginning E.L.Palmer !!!
I tried to get the guitar once with minor achievement. Can't really help there. It's kool that you play.I'm a happy singer at best.
great pick or choice Cheryl
I was a kid as well and bought the single when I was 12. Kids of today are not exposed to the quality or variety of music on top 40 radio.
Mysterious, classy, beautiful song... one of my favorites. Fantastic live version. Thanks for sharing!
I wish I had been there.
His talent is like no other, I'd recognize an Al Stewart song immediately even if I've never heard it before.
This is the song of my nostalgia, oh the memories.
I saw Al Stewart at the Beck Theatre Hayes, in an acoustic set must be around 20 years ago.
Love his music now as much as I did then.
I agree, I'm doing the same, very beautiful masterpiece, musical genius Al Stewart
I listen to this song at least twice a day. It takes me back to the good ole days, and the great music we had.
Can't wait to see Al perform the 'Year of the Cat' album in its entirety at the Royal Albert Hall on 15 October. My husband, incidentally, worked on this 'Whistle Test' when he was a Studio Cameraman with the BBC at Television Centre in the 70's.

I love music like this...
A saudade do passado nutre o medo do futuro.
Bom dia, Marcio Ripper !
Ronaldo Nobre isso me soa tão hoje. Eu gostava dessa música e cantava com 7 anos. Harmonia linda. Letra (q eu n sabia n epoca) maravilhosa, instrumentos afiados e paixão.
Abs Ronaldo meu brother.
Reading the lyrics thinking that's poetry set to music. You really don't see that very often.
Bob Dylan is terrible!
@ Greg - You don't think Bob Dylan is a great lyricist? Tangled Up In Blue creates atmosphere just like this song does. Though tonight I think this song does it a bit better.
Beeguiling Perhaps I misspoke about Bob Dylon. He obviously is talented as he was very successful. I just personally never liked his music. I thought he just talked over the music with no rhythum.
Enormously talented musicians, spectacular really ,presented in such a modest and understated manner.Class.

An absolutely lovely song. He had such a gorgeous voice. Miss those days..years of great rock and roll!
"She comes out of the sun in a silk dress running
Like a watercolor in the rain"
Al Stewart; master lyricist!
I have to agree with you there :)
This is a good song. I enjoyed listening it in the early 70's.
One of the best songs ever.
Timeless. Thanks for postings.
So under-rated. The way the piano opens, flows to guitar then sax. They don't play them like this anymore. Fantastic arrangements
My HS years were 76-80 and we did take music for granted, there were so many great artist and real rock and roll bands that a new album was out every other week.I remember when THE WALL came out from Pink Floyd, no big deal but what a classic. I feel sorry for the crap my kids have today.......thank god for youtube

If you listen to the original, you've got traditional rock instruments and strings and horns blended together. I was too young to understand what all of it meant, but I'm really enjoying the music of my youth.
Why can't there be an occasional song like this now!? Such a classic--never get tired of this great song.
In a way it's good cause we wouldn't value them if they were common but yeah occasionally would be nice
Another classic song from 70's confirming why it's my favorite decade for music
One of my favorites when I drive home from work... al the worries disappear. Beautiful music. Love it. Allways.
Yes! We all took it for granted didn't we? It's just that there was so much great music that we always thought it would be there with a never ending supply of outstanding artists. The seventies were truly great! I want to do it all over again!
One of my favorite songs of the 70's. Lot's of memories flood in when I hear it. Wow, so much has changed since then.
THIS SONG IS GREAT! Best song of Al Stewart......awesome tune.
Have a great 70th this year Al.... some very memorable music and times of my life.....
ohh yeeaahh. one of my all time favorite songs. brings back memories of simple times.
Love the melody excellent song. Mr Al Stewart you sing the song perfectly
This is positively legendary, they put it on the radio here in Mexico at least a couple of times a day and deservedly so!
