Everyone's talking about how hard this game is, but can we just talk about how fucking amazing these graphics for the NES are?! These are on Kirby Adventure's levels of colorful and detailed. (Both also have parallax scrolling too!)
lol yeah, pros who cheat, sorry but tool assist is just a "nicer way". i'd love to get my hands on a cartridge of this and an old nes to see if i can do it for real.
This game is only hard until you memorize everything. Only 3 moments in this game are "random", fireballs + missles in volkmires, and the mines in surf city.
The graphics for this game on the NES where ground breaking for the time. This game pushes the system to its limits. Some of cutscenes between Stages look like early 16 bit . But all Flashy graphics and bells and whistles aside this game ranks a 20 on a scale from 1-10 in terms of difficulty. I remember playing this game at my step cousins house in Long Island and could never beat the turbo tunnel.
It's fun how this game is considered one of the toughest games ever, yet so many people have so many good memories related to it. I was one of the many who never completed the game, but I had so much fun with it. The Turbo Tunnel was hell with friends, but really fun to play too. Something about Battletoads was very special, while being difficult it was still entertaining. Props to Rare for another great game.
NES limitations has nothing to do with this, BattleToads was released 3 years after Ninja Gaiden 1 and a year after Astyanax and it still had far worse looking ending. Being a NES game is definitely not an excuse.
How is Ninja Gaiden and Astyanax an Excuse for that? Try to remake Battletoads and Give it a Well done Ending with Just limited to do it with *8 Bits* in Ages where the Technology Wasn't so Advanced like Today.
I remember this game actually has warp zones in certain levels. You have to do certain things to make the white dots appear then jump in the white dots.
I remember being in grade school and beating this game. I told my friends and they all thought I was flat out lying. No one had ever made it pasted the Turbo Tunnel, not even my old brother. I Studied this game for weeks to master it, my bother made me play though for him to prove I wasn’t lying. Now for Ghost & Goblins, fuck that game. My brother did master Ninja Gaiden. Something I could never do, until the NES classic came out. After damn near 3 decades I finally beat that damn game!
@Sneep29 actually this was my first time getting past the ice zone, usually i would go through the time warp on the hoverthings but since its a longplay i got to do every level, it was also the first time i beat the game
Turbo Tunnel wasn't super hard, it was just the introduction to the game difficulty spike. It intimidated a lot of players, and they never moved past it. I think it was brilliant to put it at the start of the game. Imagine if it was near the end? You got to it, you died. Restarted, got back to it, died again. Eventually, you had it down. I played this game for the first time in fifteen years a few days ago, my fingers still remembered how to get through the Turbo Tunnel.
Excellent job my man... That's what i call a real great player. I've really enyioed watching your style. It took me several months for do it! Greetings from Peru.
@doshemekluta i used savestates, its just that i used an emulator that can rerecord, it would record the input of what i do, then i play back the input and record the playback, this was also the first time i beat the game, and got past the level after the snake pit
This was my all-time favorite NES game! It is a very hard game indeed, but it’s a game repetition & practice. Bet I had over 100 hours before I finally beat the game. Thanks for the memories.
the most nightmareish levels for me were the snake world and bike race with that saw.... the bike level was mostly done by a psychopath since even slighest mistake and it was over... personaly I liked the skuter level with fast moving walls xD
Well... I think the ninja turtles didnt age well. Battletoads on the other hand did. Some months ago, there was a new battletoads game that got released
Remember when my friend bought this game when it came out... Such a great game and characters, but man this was way too hard! Biggest flaw still was in 2player mode where players could harm/hurt each others... Only barely made it to the ice stage, but i only played this on 2player mode so i guess that counts as achievement.
I love Turbo Tunnel. Lately I've been playing and taking the stage 1 warp just so I can mess around in Turbo Tunnel, jumping the tall barriers, maybe clearing it, maybe having to continue and start over. Something about that level's just a lot of fun for me.
Back in 1991, there was a device called _Game Action Replay_, and, connected between the NES and the game, this device allowed save states to almost any game. The beauty of this device was if you ever mess up, you press a couple of buttons and you pick up almost *exactly* where you left off. It didn't offer special powers like Game Genie, it just helped you immensely where if you mess up, you didn't have to go back all the way to the beginning of the stage, it puts you right at the moment before you died, where you can keep trying *until you get it right.* What does this have to do with Battletoads, you might ask? Well, Battletoads is one of the hardest games ever made, so the GAR device was like a *godsend* to people like me who try our damnedest, but still hated going all the way back to the beginning to beat the level. I could never beat that game without the GAR device. If you can, praise to you! Battletoads was that damn hard!
The first level was so harmless and fun. How quickly things changed in this game xD. Not that it will matter at the end of my life, but I'm happy to say I did beat this, once.
I totally agree on the Turbo Tunnels. That level is all just memorization and getting the rhythm down and keeping calm. That's really all it is. As for Volkmire's Inferno. The walls that beep and charge at you at an insanely fast speed, the last two tend to get me a lot cuz of the perfect timing you need. It's like if you move too early, you get hit by the wall you're going through to reach the last wall. Move too late by just a bit, and you slam into the last wall and die.
Level 4 looks amezing as well with it’s overlapping paralax scrolling background. Am stun how rare ware did pull this off. Heck even donkeykong country on gameboycolor lacks paralax scrolling despites it was made 10 years later on a more powerful system.
Snot gobblers......LOL. Well i got this game in '92 I think (I remember i got Ninja Gaiden 3 in '91) I was 13 going on 14, of course i got stuck in Level 3 for a while, then eventually passed it. I somehow got really great at the game and finished it, with and without the warps (but the 5-toad code, which still isn't enough lives). So glad i kept this game. If this was tool-assisted don't worry, i understand ......
Arctic Caverns (level 4) and Terra Tubes (level 9) are two of the best designed platforming stages I've seen in the NES. Too bad most players never got that far.
Rare made this game excruciatingly difficult on purpose. They didn't want you renting it and beating it in one weekend so they figured if you buy it you'd keep playing until you did beat it. This backfired on them terribly as a lot of people who DID buy it either couldn't past certain levels and returned it, beat it and never played it again because of the difficulty and terribly lame ending or got so frustrated they broke the game in anger.
I still thought the SNES version was tough, but seeing this, it must've been a hell of a lot easier.. Less stages overall, bonus chances, and .. I was actually able to beat it, haha. Although in that version, having a life bar became sort of redundant after level 2 since there was only 1-hit kills by then. Hats off to anyone who's beaten either one of the early BT games!

never managed to pass the half of it, maybe ill give it a shoot now again
The first 2 levels of this game sure were fun...

There are harder games than this but this is one of those, where you actually tried to make the effort to do so.
But yeah, this is well-known and it's like rally without a map reader.
Try playing the Ninja Gaiden Series.

never played this nes game but it looks impossible ._. especially that tunnel level
turbo tunnel is not so hard
@Miles Goodison-Fearon yeah, compared to that one, Turbo Tunnel seems like child's play.
Volkmires Inferno is hell.
In my opinion the hardest stage in the game.
Same as the last stage. It goes on forever

The level design of this game is just brilliant :o So much variety and innovation...too bad the game is so friggin' difficult!
the game is incredibly cool
A 8-bit masterpiece without any doubt. Even with his glitches.
Well yeah, difficult is a very big understatement
The tower is the most beautiful thing I've ever seen in an NES game.

I had a love-hate relationship with this game so hard and excruciating, but yet so fun and epic
me too. i never bought the cartridge, we had a video store that would rent it, wish i had bought it and could play it on my 50" tv now, lol.
It's funny, I never got past the racing level (like many, many others). The Ice Level I haven't even seen before!
I am pretty sure that my childhood copy of this game only had the first three levels programmed in it, as I never got to see past them....
I can appreciate this game for how it starts from becoming ridiculously easy to ridiculously hard in no time.
Great game.
My all time favorite.
Took me 2-3 months to learn.
I can finaly beat it, each time i play it
All that suffering for such a brief ending :,(

At least it not like ghosts and goblins

I once made it to the Elevator Shaft. I was so stunned, nervous and impressed with the level design I couldn't play properly xD
The difficulty of this game is intense, especially having to go through the Turbo Tunnel stage.
What is the point of a health bar when just about everything in the later levels kills you instantly?
No point, just badly designed game. :)

The ice and swimming levels slightly remind me of Donkey Kong Country. I wouldn't be surprised if Battletoads influenced DKC, both being by RARE.
Also when either Battletoad encounters a boss with a shocked look reminds me of Diddy's Kong Quest with Diddy and Dixie doing the same thing.
I love battletoads they're like teenage mutant ninja turtles but different
Shane Moore Reminds me of double dragon but toads...
Wild Bill funny you mention that because the BattleToads had a crossover with Double Dragon.
