Fantastic song from Sheffields finest. I'm 55 now and still love it. I'm remembering the good old days. My time is coming to end thanks to cancer 😢 But I still have my music.

Am nearly 58. I haven't heard this gem in a long time. The lyrics resonate with me more than ever before. When I look back I spent more time in relationships wishing I was single than being single wishing I was in a relationship.

Off topic, I'm pretty sure Danny Boyle was inspired by this video when directing 28 Days Later.
      Similar shots sequences of London
The lift sequence reminds me of the movie Angel Heart where Jonny is on the lift decent to HELL! That scene use to scare the sh*t out of me with the closing credits and soundtrack.

The Human League's most underrated single for me. It's completely synth pop genius. I always could have seen New Order doing this track for some reason but without the warmth of The Human League's vocals. Bow Down ++++++ I also relate tot he lyrics so much, the sentiment is perfection. It's been a a favourite of mine since 1984 ****

    • @DShamen

    Lyrics
    Winter is approaching
    There's snow upon the ground
It's good of you to visit me
    I'm glad you came around
I don't know how you found me
    I didn't let you know
I only moved to this address
I guess you think I ran out
    But that's not true
    Other people settle down
    I never do
I always have to move on
    Just have to go
I've often wondered why that is
I'd like to say but I just don't know
    I guess you always wanted
    Life on your own
    I guess you always wanted
    Life on your own
    Up here the summer's shorter
    And winter's very cold
I'm looking forward to the peace
    My lonely life will hold
I'm really glad you came here
    Thank you for the talk
It's funny how my problem stopped
When we went for a walk
    Standing here together
    Means so much
    I won't forget your confidence
    I won't forget your touch
You know I'll come to see you
    Passing through
We'll always be a world apart
I'll travel on but I will be true
    I guess you always wanted
    Life on your own
    I guess you always wanted
    Life on your own
    I guess you always wanted
    Life on your own
    I guess you always wanted
    Life on your own

Sitting in the car waiting on a friend, I started singing the lyrics quietly to myself. Why do specific songs from my younger years make me so filled with emotion that I want to cry.All the memories of past relationships that broke down hurt so much.I look back at a past so full of regret. And I stop to wonder why are we trully here..why? As Ive grown older I find myself stuck with no answer. There must be more to life than...

There is, definitely. It can only be found in a relationship that will not break down, and that is with Jesus Christ, as I've found. If you call out to Him, He will answer you. "He shall call upon me, and I will answer him: I will be with him in trouble; I will deliver him, and honour him. With long life will I satisfy him, and show him my salvation". Psalm 91:15-16

A beautiful, poignant, sad song full of pathos concerning the breakdown of a relationship and the singer's inability to hold on to it. Very telling lyric: "It's funny how my problem stopped, when we went for a walk", and the concluding line about being true, in view of his partner's search to find and recover lost love. Still brings tears to my eyes when I listen to it. An extra verse would have been a real treat, but hey, we can't have it all!

  • @pettra1
    @pettra1 4 ปีที่แล้ว +28

Why, I don't know, but this song moves me to tears. I guess it's the very real pathos expressed in the lyrics about the apparent hopelessness of the man's situation in his supposedly not being capable of holding down a relationship and his attempting to escape from it all, and leaving behind a partner who loves him and wants him back again. He is eventually found by the resourcefulness of said partner and perhaps deep down he realises that he is in denial of his latent ability to have a loving relationship ("It's funny how my problem stopped when we went for a walk"). Yet the final lyrics seem to say that he will not change for the better at all. That is the sad situation that he finds himself in, as I see it.
Such a deeply moving song for me, perhaps it echoes periods of extreme loneliness in my life. Who knows?
P.S. I just realised that I wrote about this song two years ago and my comment from then is still there. Forgive me for repeating myself. What might you think of what I have just added?

@@stevenkerry3101 Same thing here m8 . I've seen the Human League play live 18 times in total now. And hopefully I will do again soon. And I have been lucky enough to have met each member of the Human League. And 6 times in Joanne Catheralls ♥️ case and 4 times in Susan Sulley ♥️ s case. And I am a person who has got some learning problems and I have fits Black outs and panic attacks and I am also altitic 2 now. But my m8 on the spin side. I think that Joanne Catherall ♥️ my favourite Human League member and my hero. Has got some magic powers inside her ♥️ 2 wards me. Because she is partly responsible 4 the best night of my life so far. When I got back from a Human League gig from Brighton 2 Portsmouth where I live in and play Chess 4. Via a fr3 taxi.

I WISH, I WISH, I sooo WISH The Human League would put Life On Your Own in their live set. It's simply incredible, the singles from Hysteria were simply stunning. If New Order released this track in 1984 it would have been seen as a classic. But we all know The Human League are better, Life On Your Own is a CLASSIC. I adore the lyrics and relate to the whole structure of the track. Synth Pop Deep classic xxxxxxx

In '88 we divorced,my love of my life back then, and I.I remember playing this song time and time again after that, and 'Louise'.I didn't like those NewWave bands of the early eighties that much, because I grew up in the sixties and seventies. But nevertheless the Human League became thus a part of my life.I'm still moved everytime I hear this song.Great.
