And it's a misleading translation, since it's about *time* destroying you regardless of any other outcome. So even a country that wins with nuclear bombs, as the US on Japan, will eventually fall.
Though in cartoon format, one of the most heartbreaking films ever made....David Bowie wrote and performed the title song and Roger Waters also contributed music
So long child, I'm on my way And after all is done, after all is done Don't be down, it's all in the past Though you may be afraid So long child, it's awful dark And I've never felt the sun I daren't to think of when When the wind blows When the wind blows When the wind blows Life burns a savage wound, angry and wrong Trusting a twisted word, you'll run, run away You'll take him home You'll spit and taunt him But they won't believe you No matter what you'll say So long child, it's awful dark I never felt the sun I daren't to think of when When the wind blows When the wind blows
Contractual problems I guess. Real Cool World is missing as well, not to mention The Drowned Girl which unlike the other two shouldn't have been problematic as it was part of the same batch of complete early 70's through mid 80's recordings that at the time were owned outright by Bowie himself. This track and the Drowned Girl do however feature on both discs of the The Best Of David Bowie 1980/1987 CD + DVD compilation
I always thought the song is from the point of view of the bomb about to be dropped (it never has seen the sun from inside the plane but is afraid of when the wind blows once it explodes)
Ivonne, ich bin auch aus der zone. Wir werden nie wieder krieg machen, dachten wir es uns in Europa nach 1945 und besonders nach 1990, denn dachte wir die nuklear waffenen sche!sse ist auch weg. One of the 80's hidden secrets. Outstanding song from a sublime film.
Haunting book and movie. Really tapped into the nuclear fear of the 80s.
The nuclear bombs ARE STILL THERE...

Powerful film, so of its time..Bowie was perfect for the track.
R.I.P David Bowie ~ thank you for all your Songs
Thomas D. And RIP Sir John Mills (Jim) and Dame Peggy Ashcroft ( Hilda).
Unfortunately more current than ever. 😱 I loved that Bowie contributed his song to this touching film. 💞

Thank you David for this brilliant song. R.I.P
Badass song!!! Unfortunately the whole concept of nuclear war is just as terrifying today as when the movie first came out!
And today more present than at the moment you wrote this comment...
Definitely one of his darkest songs
So long child, I'm on my way
And after all is done, after all is done
Don't be down, it's all in the past
Though you may be afraid
So long child, it's awful dark
And I've never felt the sun

Trusting a twisted word, you'll run, run away

But they won't believe you
No matter what you'll say
So long child, it's awful dark

When the wind blows
When the wind blows
An obscure tune, not many know of
Brilliant BOWIE!
Such a masterpiece
Precioso es imposible no llorar al ver esto
Classical film and song
This could be the saddest song I’ve ever known.
If the film doesn't leave you in tears, you haven't understood it
Fantastico Bowie!!
My best song

The Best of Bowie 1980-87 cd/dvd set has "When the Wind Blows" and "Drowned Girl" as music videos.
It should be! I do have an LP!

when i watched the movie i'd get an erie feeling that every time he sings "when the wind blows" he's talking about the bomb blast, is that just me?
emily goth it could also be a reference to how the fallout would move on the wind after a nuclear explosion.

It's music to an animated movie of the same name. Watch it. It'll break your heart.
