  • In this twelfth video in my series "Raising Beef Cattle for Beginners," I meet up with my good friends, Richard Simpson and Susan Krieger, to take a look at a promising young bull they have for sale. Could this be the one?? You'll have to watch the video to find out!
Special thanks to Richard Simpson, Susan Krieger, and Dr. John Withers of Pecan Grove Vet Clinic in Gonzales, TX!

Watching from St. Vincent in the Caribbean. Was just wondering what was the average cost of a heifer and a bull or cow n bull?

Do you leave your bulls with the cows year round or do you separate after they calve? I'm assuming you try to calve same time each year

I do not. I put my bull with my calves from May to August and then pen him in a separate area for the rest of the year.

I had a local welder make it for me. 😉

BW (birth weight) EPD of +3.9 is not calving ease. You need a bull with a negative BW value. Conversely, CE (calving ease) EPD's need to be a positive value. Also, don't forget to factor in Accuracy % values. Virgin bulls can have really good EPDs but really low Accuracy values. Over time (with higher number of progeny) EPD's can drop significantly. Good luck!
