  • Where to start with this one. Well first off I've been waiting to check out this 1984 Maserati Quattroporte III for several months now. The junkyard actually had it for sale for a while but I never inquired about it as I had a feeling it would be parted out eventually. First off for the entire production of this model through multiple years, there were only around 2000 of them produced. They are considered the last of the hand built Italian cars. A couple of things really stood out about it for me which were the interior and engine. The interior in this car was extremely nice. The seats looked like they were almost brand new. The engine was really cool looking with the valve covers and the for Webber carburators. Another interesting thing was that the transmission was a small block Mopar 727 torque flight. Hopefully some parts get saved before this one ultimately meets the crusher.

Used to own an '82 Maserati Quattroporte back in the 80's, the same color! Loved that car, but at the time, didn't have the right repair contacts. Reluctantly, traded it after a few years. Originally came with blaupunkt radio/cassette system. The original exhaust system was beautiful, unlike the aftermarket one you see here in the junkyard example. My wife would drive it to work, you could hear that Italian V-8 rumble a couple of blocks away! Probably the last car to actually still have a choke! The EPA would have a heart attack today, since it only got 8mpg. The interior was all beautiful hand made leather, the car also had a lot of features that took years for other makes to catch up to it. And then, when you compare it to a Cadillac at the time w/ 120-130hp, the Maserati had 288hp, even with the dreaded smog pump! I was only in my 20's, living the dream, got so many compliments on that car and was pretty cool to see it on several episodes of Miami Vice & a few movies as well!

Sad to see it in this condition, altough the interior seems like it had low miles. For a parts car this would be good. They were handbuilt cars and available with a manual (260 built) and automatic (1780). They are seemwelded and its built on the basis of a detomaso longchamp. I am the lucky owner of the manual version and with 280hp and 400nm torque that thing is quick for an 80's car. The build quality is extremely nice compared to cars like a ferrari 400. This car has leather everywhere you can think off. The big issue with these cars is finding someone who can work on it as they are really rare and the 4 webers are really hard to tune right. I have tuned mine and it runs amazing now. I have seen a lot of old maserati's and most of the time they run like crap because the carbs don't have a vacuum port. i am planning to make a video of my car because i can't find alot of videos on it. also if you want to ever buy one, buy a good one because parts are hard to find and expensive. you can buy a good automatic for 25.000 but a restoration project for around 10.000.

The hood bump is definitely NOT factory; the rear end with inboard brakes was sourced from the Jaguar XJ-S and the control arms had the disturbing tendency to bend if the car was driven hard over rough roads due to the Q'porte's being heavier then the Jag. This series wasn't really "hand-built" (the first 2 series were); the cars came down a slow but functional assembly line. The first two series built from 1963-1969 were indeed hand-built, with fewer than 800 being made over 7 years.
These Series III cars did indeed have Chrysler transmissions; they were durable and cost less than anything else that could handle the power of the big V8. Plus, there was an historical link between Chrysler and Maserati (via PSA Peugeot-Citroen). That gorgeous interior was crafted of Italian glove leather, but it was not durable; cracks and splits were common, especially for cars that spent much time in the sun in hot climates.
You are right about parts - mostly unobtainable, and seriously expensive when you can find them. But, hey, this car cost more in 1984 than a Ferrari 308 GTB Quattrovalvole, so what should you expect...

Whoa Nelley, four doors and it's no more.
"Quattroporte" means four (Quattro) doors (porte) in Italian. Just like you gave the "raspberry" to the rear wheel drive Riviera, I give these the same. They were bloated, ugly total junk. This generation was offered from 1979 to 1990. Italians do many things well, but cars aren't typically one of them. Nice to look at, but it ends there.
Yes, with the VIN for the win, the 10th digit is an "E" for the 1984 model year and they were assembled in Modena, Italy. Yes, 4.1 or 4.9L V8 and yes, it's a 727 Chrysler transmission, but the smaller engine was phased out by 1981. Chrysler and Maserati did have a relationship later on, as you mentioned, they did a "Sperlich Special" (the TC) together, but that was just a gussied up K car. I don't think that hood scoop is stock, based on other photos of the car online. Perhaps that was a clock in the center like that. The AC controls on the early models were borrowed from the Chrysler parts bin as well.
Correct, these were the last of the hand assembled units. Reportedly, when it came out, DeTomaso removed all of the Citroen design from it, as Maserati and Citroen had an agreement that dated back to 1968. Giugiaro also had a handle in the design. Exterior paint should be code 231551 Nero (Black) exterior paint.
Whoa Nelley, four doors and it don't go no more. 4.9 and outta time. From Modena over on the "boot", this one cost someone a lot of loot. Parts borrowed from MOPAR and not going very far. Weber times four and soon to be no more. That's it, time to quit. Maserati is late to the classic party. Going to be flat and that's that. In Italian, it's robaccia which is junk, and this one is a flunk. Going to get squished and a few here, maybe Benny, maybe a few Italian-Americans, not including the Google Man are going to be the least bit pissed.

The only issue with qp3's were rust like any 70/80's car and the cooling (waterpump). if the cooling is right these engines are bulletproof. Damn, what a waste! I just can't believe somebody junked a car like this. Maserati had it's own V8 engine, unlike De Tomaso and Iso who used Ford and Chevy V8's. Yes, those seats were redone. The original leather was tufted. Obviously those open air cleaners are not original. Some moron ruined the hood to make it fit. I was in the Phoenix area in 1996 and met somebody who had one of these. I remember he told me he was thinking about dropping in a 350 Chevy. Even with all the needed mods it would have been way cheaper than fixing/rebuilding the Maserati V8. But man, with such a nice interior and decent body someone should have tried to get this classy ride on the road again. This really hurts...

De Tomaso built the body at Innocenti in Milan and used a cheap steel, then branded the Cars Maserati Quattroporte and put the interior and engine in Modena. In that condition, with wheels, in Italy has a value of 50.000 euro. The carburators aren't originals and also the hood.

LS the car. Treated like a jaguar. A Chevy 350 small block or a Ford 300 straight 6. It's a 727 torqueflite transmission throw a Chrysler engine in it. Other wise rip out the front seat and put it in your pickup truck. If you redo a 4-door car strip out the interior and use this. That - is freaky looking but it was common through the 80s in the basic style. I remember a guy having something like this. Worked with him. Well he was in a different League. I just a new recruit. But I was often given him rides home printer repair shop in my Oldsmobile.

Seats recovered in cheap vinyl. Totally wrong look to them. Whole interior should be sumptuous glove soft leather with 1000 wrinkles in it, each section of each piece is a soft pillow unto itself, (the center armrest console would have 3 or 4 separate pillow sections, and so would everything else, soft enough to fall asleep on. Only the dash was not pillowy. Look inside the TC maserati by chrysler at the seats to get a slight idea what I am talking about. The real Maserati interiors were 10x nicer than the TC chrysler / maserati ones, but you almost never see real Maserati interiors. The leather was very soft doesn't last long in junk yards, car fires, and other situations where 1980s Maseratis live.
