      Other than the singing and female character inserted, it's pretty close to the book. But both the changes probably made for a more successful movie.

    To appreciate a movie such as this, one must put themselves in the perspective of the time when it was made, the same requirement for a person to be able to understand history. Not everyone can, or wants to do that. If it is more than 15 or 20 years old, they have no interest or appreciation of it.

      If a movie doesn't have CGI, a lot of people dismiss it as old junk made before they could do 'much better' with CGI. It's like the old cars I love- my friends felt sorry for me when I bought & restored a '54 Chevy PU. They thought I was broke-lol. Old anything, including people, morals, etc. is out. Their loss.

      But it's symbolic of their despair. It says that on some psychological level they have lost their hope of finding water.

    This version is worth watching just to behold the perfect beauty of Miss Anna Lee's smile.
    But a better version of the movie is the 1950 film with Stewart Grainger and Deborah Kerr.
    Also, read the book, as the characters are more complete than any movie can make them.
    The old witch Gagool just cannot be presented effectively in any movie. Only the book can give her the personality Haggard intended.

    Really enjoyed this, feel like there is probably some fascinating stories about the production. Apparently Robeson was upset because they ended up reshooting scenes to make the african natives seem more stereotypical. I get similar feelings to watching little rascals(our gang), where theres the typical racism of the time but also its way ahead of its time in inclusiveness.

    • @xhagast
      @xhagast ปีที่แล้ว +3

      They allowed Oombopa to be a noble king, with a better role than most of the white characters had. Which was faithful to the book.

    • @fintan9218
      @fintan9218 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@xhagast yea exactly, although it still has its issues it was extremely progressive for its time. Like I mentioned it is similar to little rascals, which while still having racist stereotypes to certain degree it had black kids friends with white kids. Stymie was often portrayed as being very clever, and was a loved character. Well not by all, both this movie and little rascals(our gang) were criticized by racist of the time. Probably wouldn’t have found either in theaters in some parts of the country back then.

    Paul Robeson, who played Umbopa was a very fine Baratone and was featured in musical films during the 1930's &1940's.
    I'm curious to know if the Solar Eclipse was a real planned event during the production or if this was done using special effects?

      White Hunters were the professionals who led expeditions for the rich to "bag" the big five etc. back in the days when big game hunting was a macho sport for rich men with nothing better to do than "prove their manhood' that way. The pro often shot the game at the same time as the client missed it! The book was written in 1885.

      James Earl Jones was born in 1931. He was 6 years old when this came out.

    • @petegarnett7731

      Paul Robeson was branded as a "commie" in the States, so he moved to Britain and was a popular entertainer here who also starred in films such as this one, and played Othello on stage.
