Love this. I got a late 2013 16GB model for $480 US about 3 years ago. I upgraded the HD and have been using it ever since. I just replaced the battery and thermal paste yesterday. Im a filmmaker and just finished editing my first film in Premiere in 6k and it just about managed it. 4k is no problem at all. I wish I had $2500 to drop on a new M series laptop but I don't so here we are. I love this machine and run 1 x 4k and 1 x 1080pm monitor from it. Love the ports too.

I am the original owner of a late 2013 Macbook Pro 15 inch with the 2.3 Ghz Intel i7 chip and twin graphics cards (the more expensive model). I have been using this daily for nearly 8 years and it has been as reliable as a toaster. (Avoid later Macbook Pros with the dreaded keyboard problems! Avoid like the plague!) This machine is fantastic. I edit 4K video with DaVinci Resolve but have also used Final Cut. It's a fantastic machine with no hardware or software issues whatsoever. Very little sign of wear except the "N" of the keyboard is slightly worn and allows more light to pass through. I have never had a laptop last this long, usually I change them every four years but this is a powerful and reliable machine that I would highly recommend. Unfortunately MacOs Big Sur will be the last supported OS for this computer so I will probably buy a new Macbook Pro in the coming years with Apple's proprietary and powerful M1 processor.

Went for this since I want to stick to El Capitan since I’m still on Logic 9 and have many unfinished projects. So surprised and thrilled to see this video from you!! I was considering getting another newer MacBook so I can be in this decade haha but do you think it’s necessary? Or do you think this 2015 is better in many ways and no need for a brand new one. Eye opening video! Thank you so much for this!! 😻👏
Still using a 15" Pro from 2013 (A1398) at 16/512. For web browsing and typing, it is superb, no hiccups. I keep mine plugged in as a "desktop", as the battery is weak. Sure, the current M-chip laptops (esp. the Air, which I love) are faster and have incredible batt life, but for the price now on the used market, the Pro 15" 2013 is supreme value (so is the Pro 16" 2019 i9, but that's another story). Thanks for the informative video.

You can then format the SSD using disk utility thats on the usb stick using the laptop and follow the on screen instructions to install OS X. Hope this helps

Hey, you could try taking the back cover off and removing any dust from the fans. If its overheating it will limit its processor speed. If that doesn't work you could try reformatting your macbook to return it to factory settings (this will delete all data). support.apple.com/en-gb/HT208496
Depends on what software you’re using. Try checking whether any specific process is using high cpu and driving the fan rpm up. In my case it is a bad “remindd” daemon that goes to 150% cpu and drains out the laptop. So I have a temp and fan speed app that tells me when it starts getting too hot, and I just kill the remindd (reminders) daemon. It is a known issue with no resolution from apple. I'm graphic artist, and work from home on my top line 2013 iMac and I'm looking to buy a laptop for travel and keep "working from home" I'm wonder if a machine with this specs will work good without make me slow down. Do you think Adobe apps updates will be affected if I can't have OS updates ? Thanks
Why for your geekbench score does it say your cpu base frequency is 2.3ghz. In the beginning of the video you said it was the 2.0ghz i7. I’m curious as I’ve found that the clock speed difference makes a 100 point difference in geekbench 5
Great video! i was just looking for something like this. I'm about to buy a Macbook pro 15" late 2013 and i'd like to upgrade the ssd drive. Could you tell me if there is a way to run the old ssd as external hard drive? I found an "enclosure" that costs around £63...is that the only option? thanks
Hey Asta, once you've upgraded the drive I reccomend selling the old apple one on eBay and buying an external USB SSD instead - the SanDisk Extreme Portable is a popular example. Trying to adapt that old drive into an external drive will be difficult an expensive as its a format that isn't used in many places.
What’s your opinion about this? A *Macbook pro 2012 13” i5, 10gb ram 500 SSD* ($400 dlls) & *Macbook pro 2013 13” i5, 4 gb ram 500gb HDD* (also $400 dlls) which is better?
Hey Antonio - the higher RAM on the 2012 will allow you to swap between applications quicker, but the screen on the 2013 model is so much better. The processors are very similar so between the two, would you rather have more RAM or a more modern looking laptop with a MUCH better screen but with less RAM? If it were me I'd get the 2013 model, the retina screen is just too nice to turn down. If you can afford an 8GB 2013 model the extra RAM will be worth the cash.
Hi thewre, I own a late 2013 macbook pro 15" retina display and I have purchased it recently but I have one problem. It just has usb amd thunderbolt ports. How can I get my firewire hardware to work with my late 2013 macbook pro?
Hey Ivan, I think what you need is a thunderbolt to FireWire adapter. I know apple sells one for around £30 and there are probably third party versions too.

I've seen one listed for sale. It is a late 2013 15" Macbook Pro. It has 16GB 1600 MHz DDR3 Ram, 1TB SSD, macOS Big Sur Version 11.6.1, 2.3GHz Quad-core Intel Core i7. Shall I buy it if I am a Comp Sci student at college? I will be definitely buying a permanent solution later on when the stuff that was announced at CES 2022 becomes available, but if I buy this used Macbook pro now as a temporary solution for Comp Sci studies, such as running Python, Java, HTML5, C++ etc will this Macbook with its current specification be able to run properly and will it be worth it? I really need some suggestions to this and suggestions to what I should look out for now if I desperately need a laptop to get by.
I have a late 2013 mbp 15" retina. I don't have an internal drive currently. I have an external ssd and can only install MacOS Maverick through Sierra. If I try to install MacOS high Sierra (with bootable usb) through Big Sur (bootable usb and internet recovery), I get an error message saying that I may not install to this volume because the computer is missing a firmware partition. I've tried with the drive formatted to Mac OS extended journaled and APFS. I've tried downloading the efi firmware on mavericks and Sierra and both times it wouldn't install. Not sure what to do. Any help aprreciated! Don't wanna spend money on a drive just for the same thing to happen.
@@rewire7899 I was going to, but read somewhere that it has to be an original oem drive to get the efi firmware update through the high Sierra update. Forever regretting selling mine. I soldnit because the rubber gasket around the screen is peeling off. In hindsight, it shouldnt have sell it. Its not that bad.
Hey Emir, you're right - it's likely that Apple will stop releasing new versions of OS X on the 2013 Macbook Pro's in the near future. When they do this they usually stop supporting an entire generation at once, which means the 2013 up to the mid 2015 will stop at the same time. Although the newest verions of OS X might not be available, I think it'll be a while before you notice any difference. The changes in the operating updates are pretty small and for me if I miss out on the new version of OS X its not too much of a compromise compared with the price of the new laptops.

Just bought a mid 2014 MacBook Pro with 16gb RAM and i7 quad core processor for $560 so I can start getting into music production. Any idea if it would be able to handle something like that?
Hey Brandon, the 2014 MacBook Pro should be. More than enough for music production, especially with 16GB RAM. I keep seeing that laptop in loads of in the studio videos - professionals love all the ports.
Hey, apologies! The 8GB M1 macbook wasn't powerful enough to edit 4k smoothly in Final Cut. I traded it for the 16GB model which worked really well, however I couldn't justify the cost. I ended up returning it and I now continue to use my Macbook Pro 2013. The M1 had better battery life and didn't get as hot but at almost three times the price I didn't think it was worth it. Hope this helps.
Bought a late 2013 15" MBP base model because I need the larger screen for my old eyes. I rotate between my 2015 13" MacAir. Since I've retired, I don't do any video any more, just some photo editing and lots of internet. Both are even more than I need for that. A new M1 Air would be overkill and still the screen would be too small for my eyes. Spending CHF 2700.- for a base model 16" MBP is rediculous. Oh, I did upgrade the SSD to a WD S550 1TB SSD - easy peasy.
Managed to pickup two of these for £250 each after watching this video in Jan(both 15 inch, 2GHz i7, 8 GB models) It’s incredible how much performance I’ve squeezed out of these for such a low price. Can barely buy a decent iPad for £250 yet these can nicely handle pretty much anything I throw at them. I’m now deciding whether or not to upgrade to one of the latest M1 Air/Pros or just update the SSD in one of these and carry on. Considering how cheap the latest M1 Airs are right now(under £800 for the 8GB), would you say it’s a noticeable upgrade? Or am I better off with splashing for one of the new M1 pro models for a noticeable upgrade Thank you for the video
Hey, great pick-up. I ended up swapping for an M1 air that I got with a student discount and free airpods. I went for the 8GB model as I dont use my laptop for much more than web browsing etc and do all my editing on my main PC. The M1 air is excellent for travelling etc, great battery, small and never gets hot - no fans etc. But the storeage isn't upgradeable and obviously has a much smaller screen. I also had a couple issues trying to edit in Final Cut with only 8GB of RAM. If you want a smaller laptop for travel, or sitting on the couch then the M1 air is great - however I'd probably have kept the 15 inch if I wanted to use it on a desk for editing. Hope this helps!
@@rewire7899 Hey! Thank you for the response that’s much appreciated. I have gotten fairly used to the bigger keyboard and screen so I think I’ll wait until some used M1 Pros become available for the upgrade, that way I can keep the ports. Thanks for the video :)

I tested crucial p2 CT2000P2SSD8 P2 and not detected with nvme adopter please help even it is recommended in compatibility list any advice?
Why for your geekbench score does it say your cpu base frequency is 2.3ghz. In the beginning of the video you said it was the 2.0ghz i7. I’m curious as I’ve found that the clock speed difference makes a 100 point difference in geekbench 5
Hey, the geekbench specs are probably the correct ones (2.3) - unfortunatly I don't have the laptop anymore to double check.
Did you get the gt 750m dedicated graphics to work on Mac OS Catalina? Or is it deactivated?
Hey, works with catalina no problem.
There is a hardware I used to use with my older 2011 macbook pro and the hardware only has firewire ports and the late 2013 macbook pro doesn't have firewire ports. It just has usb amd thunderbolt ports. How can I get my firewire hardware to work with my late 2013 macbook pro?
Hey Ivan, I think what you need is a thunderbolt to FireWire adapter. I know apple sells one for around £30 and there are probably third party versions too.
@@rewire7899 Hey rewire thanks for your response. The firewire hardware is a firewire 1394 would that work with the adapter apple sells?
Yes I think so. You might just also need a FireWire 4 pin to FireWire 6 pin cable.
@@rewire7899 ok I"ve just recently ordered the thunderbolt to firewire adapter moments ago. When it does i will check if i have to order new firewire cable 4 pin to 6 pin. Thank you again.
@@rewire7899 Hi there again, I just received my adapter today and was able to make the connections and it worked. so no to need to purchase a 4 pin to 6 pin firewire cable. thanks again for your help.
Great video :) How long did the replacement battery last?
Hey, thanks! Still gonig strong 12 months later.
Is this 15” 2013 reliable ? According to graphic card? (We know some issue with gt650m, right?)
Hey Einar, I sold mine last year but it worked perfectly up until I sold it. Hope this helps.
Depends if it has the dgpu
Go for it. You''ll love it.
Hey, is it possible you could buy an internal nvme to see if this fixes the issue?
@@rewire7899 I was going to, but read somewhere that it has to be an original oem drive to get the efi firmware update through the high Sierra update. I have a mid 2014 13" MacBook Pro and the drive should be compatible with the late 2013 MacBook Pro. I need to back up that drive and test it in the 2013 MacBook. I'll let you know how it goes.
So is it worth to buy used MacBook Pro 15 retina 2013 Core i7 16gb ram 500gb ssd in this year 2021?, im sorry if asking the question that you already said in the video bcs im not understand some part of it 🥺 and sorry if my english broken
Hey, I think it is worth it. I really like my machine.
Hi , great video .
Bought one in a true mint condition a week ago and I am trying to find the link to the ssd and adapter you have bought :)
Hey Mati, I used this one:

Forever regretting selling mine. I soldnit because the rubber gasket around the screen is peeling off. In hindsight, it shouldnt have sell it. Its not that bad.
Good vid
Thanks!
Your most welcome
Is it worth for a student to do their assignment and also edit video ?
Yes 100%.
How much battery life do you get on this laptop and whats the cycle count?
Hey, I get around 3 to 4 hours of normal use. My batter is around 200 cycles.
@@rewire7899 my 2012 mid 13.3 inch gives around 3.5-4.0 hours of battery
But, yours should run at least 6-7 hours and you have only 200 cycles
I picked up a late 2013 macbook pro core i7 16 gb ram 15 inch for £130 fully working off ebay
How long the 2013 late 15 inch MacBook will last? It will stop getting updates after 1 or 2 years . Then, what should I do?
Any suggestion ?
Hey Emir, you're right - it's likely that Apple will stop releasing new versions of OS X on the 2013 Macbook Pro's in the near future. When they do this they usually stop supporting an entire generation at once, which means the 2013 up to the mid 2015 will stop at the same time. Although the newest verions of OS X might not be available, I think it'll be a while before you notice any difference. The changes in the operating updates are pretty small and for me if I miss out on the new version of OS X its not too much of a compromise compared with the price of the new laptops.
@@rewire7899 so, you mean new versions of OS X won’t hamper my work. Right?
@@emirsoyeder8082 Right, even if Apple don't release new OS X versions it wont stop you running your programs on the old OS X.
@@rewire7899 But, I cannot watch videos on TH-cam in my IPad 2 (iOS 9.3.5) because it says my TH-cam must be updated to watch videos but TH-cam won’t update anymore
Do you think I can upgrade the RAM for this model?
MacBookPro10,1
MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Early 2013)
Hey Nabil, unfortunately the RAM cannot be upgraded on the early 2013 retina.
Only 560$. That’s a great deal
Where did you buy that ?
Is there any scratch or problem?
@@emirsoyeder8082 nothing major. A few small scratches but nothing on the screen really. Mostly around the ports.
@@rewire7899 thanks! Nice to know I didn’t waste the money
@@DONI-xr8gl how was the battery backup?
Never posted the m1 comparison!
Great choice. I tried the new M1 MacBook but couldn't justify it for the enormous price hike and lack of ports.
Managed to pickup two of these for £250 each after watching this video in Jan(both 15 inch, 2GHz i7, 8 GB models)
It’s incredible how much performance I’ve squeezed out of these for such a low price.
Or am I better off with splashing for one of the new M1 pro models for a noticeable upgrade
Thank you for the video
