    Nice solid work.

Thanks for the video - It looks like you are using 4x4 posts and a build up beam consisting of two 2x12 boards. A 4x4 is typically 3.5in wide and two 2x12 boards would end up being 3in wide. How did you account for the extra .5 in?

Hi there, I'm actually using a solid 4x10 PT Beam here. However, a few ways to address that issue is to use 1/2" PWF (Permanent wood foundation) treated plywood or scrap composite fascia material, sandwiched between the 2x lumber to pad out the beam to the proper thickness. Hope that helps!

Will this deck still require knee braces to pass inspection? I'm building a deck at the moment and plan to use these Simpson straps. My hope is that I won't need to add the 4x4 or 6x6 45 degree angle braces.

You will need some form of bracing for racking resistance as the T-straps don't prevent that on their own.
On this particular deck, to keep the underside unobstructed, I added 2 - 2x4 PT Diagonal Braces from the deck ledger to the beam. The ends were mitered at 45' degrees and the boards were G-taped to the bottom of the joists, with a 4" Simpson SDWS Timber Screw at each end of the board into the ledger and the beam.
This was a permitted project and passed inspection, so my guess is it should be fine, but it depends on your inspector. Mainly I think they're looking to make sure you have some solid form of racking resistance, but it depends on your inspector
In my experience, underside diagonal bracing like I just described is actually much more rigid and sturdy than knee braces, as the knee braces rely on the stiffness of the post itself to resist movement, so length of post and thickness become a factor, whereas the underside diagonal bracing remains very stiff to compression and tension forces, being braced directly against the ledger and beam, and being fastened every 16" to the deck joists.

@@drew5334 I see those braces. I may just take that approach. The deck is only 6' deep and 14' wide. I'm using Owens Corning Weardeck for the framing and the 6x6 posts so everything is inherently stronger. I'll call in for the inspection without the knee braces and see how things go. Thanks!
