I adopted my little Chihuahua, Gracie, at 5 yrs who was a foster and the best little girl too. She loved everyone. She was a little chubby because she had a huge appetite. I miss her so.
I have a chihuahua who is a rescue. He has been treated very poorly from his previous owner. He was thrown, kicked and hit. When he was at the rescue he was very withdrawn and overweight due to not being walked etc. He was there for 7months. They were considering putting him down. But they let me meet him. And the rest is history. He is my absolute best friend. The rescue was shocked that monty picked me or even came to me when I met him because they saw him as I'd have to pick him situation. But that wasn't the case. I had three weeks off from work with annual leave and I think it was the best thing I've ever done as within three weeks I was able to bond with him, and he bonded hard. I also was able to start taking him for walks, he didn't know what a leash was or treats etc but within a day or two walking on a leash was accomplished. All he wants is to be happy and make me happy. He walks 2.9km now and is 3.5kg down from 4.5kg.
I got 2 chihuahuas, and they play with my Jack Russel Terrier! They are also very kind, and always wag their tail whenever i come back from school! I’m glad i have them.

So true mine has to be with me or my husband all the time. He’s ok if we leave the house for a couple of hours but after that we could come home to a potty break from him in the house.
@@sharonmassetti265 Mine will be 2 years old on April 20th and she has never been left alone, not even once! If I have to go somewhere that I can't take her, I either leave her with my hubby or my mom! She's so spoiled lol!
I got a little unique chihuahua. He is mixed with a chinese crested dog, so he is even more demanding than pure-bred chihuahuas! He is the best thing in my life and I think it’s so fun to take care of him.
My Chihuahua will not eat dog food of any kind. I've tried every kind. So I feed her meat. I talk to her all day. She loves to stay close. I'm finally getting her spayed. We got her weight up enough for her to have surgery safely. I've had three Chihuahuas. And this one has an incredible personality. Love her so much. Thanks for the video. I know I'm doing it right 👍.
Your Chihuahua sounds like a real character! It's awesome that you've found a way to keep her happy and healthy. Best of luck with her spaying journey! 🐾
I just rescued a 5 year old male chi named Taco. I changed his shelter name to Nugget! He is such an amazing guard dog. He’s like a little secret service agent. Won’t let me enter a room without standing guard to ensure my safety. 😂
I just paid 2000 dollars on my senior rescue chi to take out bladder stones as big as golf balls ! Another vet visit tomorrow for check up but she’s MUCH better.
Wow!!!! I guess I better start saving up some money just for vet bill because I believe in taking care of my dogs health to the point some people criticize me but I don't care. I want them to be happy and healthy.
I’ve had a boxer/rotweiler mix, pit bull, a mutt, dachshund/basset hound mix and a chi. I’ll never get a diff breed than chihuahua ever again lol. Dont get me wrong I loved other breeds as well but not nearly as much as chihuahuas. My 14 year old long haired fawn chi just passed about 2 months ago. But I just got another chi pup and he’s amazing. Love this video.
My chihuaha is low maintenance, she needs structure and regularity and can be alone for more than half a day. She knows we always come back. She has an inside (puppy mat) toilet and an outside toilet for her to choose, no work there. Her teeth, a common problem with small dogs are perfect without brushing, because she only gets good meat and some no carb no sugar treats. I think the food pellets with the the rice and other carbs in it cause tooth decay in dogs. Try it, she likes whole food and it is cheaper than the veterinarian. High energy is just 10% of the day. She sleeps and relaxes in our lazy boy and wants to be close to us. She needs a quiet, predictable loving environment with TLC, thats all.
Thanks for the tip because my dog in the picture died from oral cancer. I'm still not fully over that experience which lasted about a year and took a lot out of me because I gave him around the clock bedside service and had a vet come to my home when it was time to let him go which he died in my arms in my easy chair we used to share. He was a Bichon and was soooo loyal to me until words cannot describe how close we were. I also adopted another Bichon but I lost her within 9 months due to chronic kidney disease a month ago. My heart is broken and crushed because she was my special little angel girl and no one can ever take her place in my heart. But I have enough love to share once again. I wasn't going to adopt again and just live with my cat but I'm 69 years old now and decided I want to die happy so hopefully now I'm about to give 50 per cent of my love to a Chihuahua and 50 per cent to my resident cat who I love the ground my cat walks on. I'm sure they'll be quite a pair. 😊❤❤❤
lived with many different breeds over the years but Chihuahuas are the only ones that will only come to you if THEY decide it's worth the effort.. most dogs if you click yr tongue and/or call them by name will come to you straight away, glad to be offered attention of any sort. do same with a chihuahua and you'll be lucky if they even look your way...and feel pitiful gratitude if they bother to head towards you.. basically they are canine cats.. but without the potential for unexpected violence.
Good information. I have a one year old that I got at 9 wks. She is totally different than my late teacup. Shes a totally spoiled child. Just started the teeth brushing & she's fighting me all the way. Like these videos.
So sorry to hear about your loss. I just lost my beautiful little angel girl Beyonce who was a Bichon Poodle mix. But the one in my picture is my first dog Bentley and he was a Bichon and Havanese mix. I loved the ground those 2 dogs walked on. Beyonce developed CKD and Bentley developed oral cancer. Their loss tore me apart. But I have my faithful cat Gary Aspen and now I'm about to adopt Valentina the Chihuahua. 😂❤🎉
I love Chihuahuas I have one I went to a shelter and saw a cute brown chi but we couldn't get him I wish we could get him as a friend for my chi cookie but the last time a saw him he was sad just waiting for someone to adopt him🥺
I wouldn’t call them “high maintenance”… Just gotta make sure you don’t squish them when they sleep under blankets. They do shed a lot more than you’d expect though…
Excellent general overview of responsible chihuahua ownership … I mean human canine fur babyhood!!! We don’t own them; they own our hearts!!! All be safe; God bless!!! Chuck Knight from Buffalo, Texas. 🤠👨🌾✝️🙏🐩
I have a help question: In September we rescued what was to be a 2 yo chihuahua (sight unseen). Turned out to be a chihuahua/min pin mix). No problem. By the next day, he was warming right up. The vet said he was like a totally different dog between his first and second visits a month apart. Our problem is we have a pomeranian, also a male, about 7 to. Outside they play together, sit together on their doggy deck, etc., with no problems. Inside the pomeranian gets upset when we throw toys for the chihuahua or if he feels like his space is interfered. The pomeranian has ABSOLUTELY no desire to play with toys. Never has regardless of type or size including those dispensing treats. Show him a toy and he ABSOLUTELY turns his head away and will actually move out of the way. The chihuahua does all he can to avoid problems. Doesn't stare at the pomeranian. Turns his back, cetc. The dogs were introduced on neutral ground. Both are fixed. Both are given the same amount as "ME TIME ". Not just alone but scratched/rubbed on our opposite sides. Or my wife brushes one as I do the other. Then we change dogs and continue. Regardless of what we do, there are usually, at least 2 battles daily. The worst time is throwing the toys. But, the chihuahua likes being under s blanket. The pomeranian on top. There are multiple blankets in different locations. Yet, the battle will be the same blanket. We had hoped after 5 months the kinks would have worked out by now. No way will we give up either furry family member. Both are here to stay. The vet says they will have to figure it out on their own. I am just looking for the same peace shared outside to be shared inside. Any ideas? Thanks.
YOU, the owner, have to be the ALPHA and lay down the law. Maybe the pomeranian needs to be put in the crate, when it acts up. I have a minpin/chihuahua, my first small , female dog. We got her as a 5 yr old and been with us for just over 1 year. What an absolute delight and SO intelligent. My whole concept about small dogs has changed 180°! She's so quiet (I wish she would bark more) and not possessive. I swear she's going to get me into trouble one of these days for being a "chick magnet". 😄
The first issue is the Pomeranian is having territorial instinct inside the house and trying grab all your attention. For that, the only thing we suggest is to train them for socializing. The time they fight take both of them in different rooms and wait for them to calm. when they calm down, bring them back in one space and let them play. if they battle over blanket, do the same. And about the toys, you can only associate them with treat. Train them with treats to play with toys.
II´ve had a 15 y o cat, when I brought home my Chihuahua and she tried every trick in the world to get rid of the puppy. I´ve had Ruby on my lap and the cat 6 kg Persian crossbreed came ad sat on her. Cat wanted to sit on my lap and dog on my shoulder. Before the cat died at the age of 18 years, she would gave permission to the play and provoke the pupp herself. And Ruby soon will be 8 spoiled to the roof.
I miss my little boy chi. Passed away 18 months ago. Had him for 13 years and was my best friend. He was my emotional support during some tough times. We would run together and we were very active together. I just wish I could afford to buy another one but since Covid the price has risen soo much. I am not going to spend $5000.
I'm so sorry for your loss. I can empathize with you. I lost my baby Chip of 15 years last Tuesday to arthiritis and pancreatitis. 😭 I cried for a whole week. I still have moments when I cry. He was a beautiful black, brown and white short-haired Chihuahua. I'm trying to make it through one day at a time. In my area Chis sell for $500-$1200. I just can't get one right now as I am still grieving over Chip. 💔
Try a shelter, you can get an older one, Chihuahuas usually last 17-20 years. Older ones are cheaper at shelters and all they want is a warm lap and love.
@@joltjolt5060 Agreed. I adopted a 12-year-old Chihuahua from my county pound last Wednesday. The adoption fee was $25 and they had gotten him all up-to-date on vaccines, given him tick/flea & deworming treatment, and performed neuter surgery on him. The shelters are full of Chihuahua's, lots of younger ones available too. He is such a love. I don't know what it's like in LuLu's area, but I'm in AZ and our county pound is at full capacity right now. It's a great time to adopt if you can - many dogs need help right now.
@@rjbfunfacts6947 the local shelters here charge $400. I have only ever seen one small dog advertised. I have my eye out but I’m not keen to have an old dog because I have a young child and the vet bills will be huge.
I adopted one Tiny AppleHead Chi he is 6months 2.3lbs. (Wyatt Earp) my roommate adopted the girl (Vivian) she is 1.7lbs and their big brother Henry Holiday 3.8lbs didn’t fit with the lady that picked him so he moved as well. They get along very well but it’s hard to control 3 little Gremlins. Do you have any tricks or secrets to train all of them. Please help. I love them all but I need help! Thank you for this video
I have 2 male chuahuahuas, I had to actually get them both neutered due to claiming my attention to themselves. Each one battled for whom was to sit on my lap alone. Didn't fight another time but on my lap. Chuahuahuas will do this I was told so each got fixed and no longer did I see them fight.
Chihuahua's are not so social pets so they need time to get along with each other. We will suggest you to take the control by training them. If they get into fight, take them in separate rooms immediately and when they calm down, let them play again.
Food motivated and happy voice and lots of verbal praise and physical praise as well ,I say to my dogs after I've done there nails or something they rather not be doing, lol I say all done and hold up my hands to show them they are empty and then I say yay celebrate and clap my hands and do a little happy dance ,works for my ,I did have a chow chow and brought him to puppy school. And golden retrievers I trained them all with walking and everything ,I never layer a mean hand on any of them ,please don't, use any type of hitting ,I used a spray bottle once to get them to stop doing something, not near there face ever...and 1word commands like if u want them to stop barking at a person walking down the street I'd say ,,Leave it and snap my fingers ,it got to the point where I only had to say it once ...I wish I could talk over the phone lol it would be so much easier to explain the little tricks I did to train them all ,I have had wonderful behaved dogs and cats all my life ,I became a animal groomer ,I love dogs this much ❤ best job ever but it's hard on the body my hands cramp up and things like that ,I have daily pain and don't take meds ,Tylenol for a headache and that's all ,so I wish u well and patience is a virtue! Bless your heart and brush teeth is vital ,they get yucky teeth fast ,and it's not good at all take that advice please, it will save you and your fur baby's pain from infected and the cost yikes ,all of my dogs knew there was no getting out of a bath or nail trims lol all done with love ,remember celebrate like they made the deans list to the best college 😀!
If nothing has worked yet, focus on Henry Holiday and Wyatt Earp getting along, and figuring out who's who in the hierachy. Then intruduce Vivian on a one-to-one basis first, before gradually letting them interact more and more.
Curious, dog food with at least 30% protein? Lost my father last August & my mother last December. I'm taking care of mom's 6 little ones now. They absolutely love me 😉. I believe they're what's called pear head Chihuahuas. Maybe a mix between the apple & dear head? Rescued from a breeder that had a stroke. I use pedigree crunchy kibble & tender bites (chicken & steak) for small dogs. Says 21% crude protein (min). Says it has salt but not how much. I also use Beneful IncrediBites (tiny cans) just for small dogs. Says 11% crude protein (min). Couldn't exactly find salt or sodium but seen sodium selenite which I just read could be toxic to animals. Even seeing meat meal should be avoided. Guess with all the companies out there making foods to poison us on the regular, what would be an ideal dogfood that's on the market? Thinking about simply going back to homemade chicken and rice lol. Perhaps with some diced carrots & maybe pumpkin or something. & For the record, I know rice is a heavy starch so I always rinse it several times yet notice a lot of dogfood has rice involved. Any advice is better than no advice. Thanks.
If you're still looking for dogfood in the market, you should try Royal Canin Dog Food. They have Adult/Puppy Dry and Wet food specifically for Chihuahuas and are tailored nutrition. My 2 Chi's (6 & 2 y.o) are finicky with food even with homemade foods (I mostly do sliced carrots & chopped green beans mixed with chicken breast since only the youngest eats rice) but they love Royal Canin Chihuahua dry food. I think they're enamored with the size of the kibble since it's perfect for their jaw. I've also tried the Royal Canin Starter wet food and their Mini Puppy Wet food when I weaned my Chi's. My Vet recommended the Royal Canin Recovery Wet food for my 12 y.o Labrador Retriever mix that had digestive problems so I trust the brand.
@@loreen129 Thanks. I'm tending to over 40 animals by myself now & the food still seems to be getting more expensive. I'll leave a message for my veterinarian to give me a call to discuss the use of Royal Canin. He knows me well. Been with him 12yrs & he's run into me helping others with their animals. Thanks again. 😇✌️
I am a proud Momma of 2 precious 80-lb pitties. I knew someday I would downsize, but not anytime soon...until a friend post pics of Chihuahua-mix pups. I fell in 🥰 love! My sweet MiaGrace has been a Godsend. She always make me laugh and I'm sure her big brother and sister wonder what she is. 😆 Luckily, they get along. My prayers were answered - she is not a barker (neither are my other 2)! In fact, I have never heard her bark! She will, however, whine for me to pick her up to snuggle. 😁😊 Have any of you ever experienced a non-barker Chihuahua?
My chi only barks when there’s a stranger at the door 😊 and it’s really more of a little howl 😂 I don’t mind. Somehow she knows when it’s me coming home vs a stranger
My youngest Chi wasn't a barker at all but he does this little whine when he hears noise outside. He knows I find it cute so now he plays it up as he whines louder 😂
Absolutely love my little dude, he's smart af, and was super easy to train. I just wished someone had warned me about how many times I would end up touching his little wiener by mistake lol.
Advantage multi is the best preventative care I found it covers heartworm, fleas, roundworm It’s a one and done preventative that I use on my Chihuahua and it’s also used for the treatment of heart worms
@Tornado every animal I’ve owned has died of old age. I’m glad what you do works for you, but I would not be able to keep my dog inside my house for his entire life.
@Tornado i’m pretty sure 16 years is a very long life for a small dog, my cats were in their 20s when they passed. I’m not quite happy that you’re insinuating that I’m slowly murdering my animals.
@Tornado I was going to argue but your really not worth it. My animals are fine and loved. You can have different opinions but calling someone a murder because they do vet recommend treatment is an awful thing.
@Tornado and imagine that there are other breeds of dogs besides Chihuahuas my last dog was a Yorky, which 13 is a good life expectancy for one of them
How do you get tham to wind down at night mine is bouncing off the walls until 11:00 pm every day. We play fetch all day so she gets a lot of exercise.
Try adding some interactive toys and creating a cozy bedtime routine. Fennec foxes love mental stimulation too, so puzzle feeders can help tire them out mentally. 🌙🦊
My biggest issue with Bella "my dog" is she is very picky about what treats she will eat. I have spend about 150 bucks trying different treats for her. So far she will only eat 3 treats. Pupporoni, chewy raw hide twists, and flavored burger bites. But sometimes she will turn her nose at the burger bites. I just wanna get her more treats, but she wont eat them. Any suggestions??
Hey there! 🐾 Have you tried homemade treats? Sometimes pups prefer those personal touches. Also, maybe explore some natural options like sweet potato or peanut butter bites. Good luck! 🐶 #PetopediaLove
I have had dogs my whole life and have always kept food in the dog bowl, and I have never had a dog that was obese! They eat until they're full and don't go back to the bowl until they're hungry again. I know there are some dogs that will eat and eat until they're obese, but most dogs don't do that. Like I said, I've had many dogs and none of them have ever been over weight even though I keep the dog food bowl full so they can eat when they want!
@@petopedia_ You're welcome and thank you for responding! I just wanted to give another perspective because I have heard others (such as dog trainers) say that you should measure out their food and don't leave the food bowl where they can get it unless it's feeding time, but I've never had an issue with my dogs overeating. I do understand that some dogs will overeat if given the opportunity so I'm not saying you're wrong, I just wanted to give my perspective from my experience. I think how we feed our dogs should be based off of each individual dog because what works for one might not work for another. For example, my Chihuahua hates for her food bowl to be empty, even if she doesn't want to eat, she still wants food in her bowl lol! She will bring her food bowl to whichever room I'm in and bark and push the bowl around until I go put some food in it! And 9 times out of 10, once I put some food in it she will sniff it and then go lay down! She just wants to know that it's there for when she gets hungry 😂
Same. Free feeding works best for me with my 2 Chi's and they're both very healthy, not obese at all. They only take bites of kibble from the bowl whenever they get hungry. Their coat is both silky and shiny esp my long haired Chi.
@@loreen129 I have a long haired Chihuahua too! She's all black with a little bit of white on her chest! And her fur is super shiny and silky smooth too! I wish I could share a pic of her but it won't let me in these comments! She'll be a year old on April 20th
I'm interested to know, how long can they be left in the house alone? I work four days on four days off 12hr shifts. I live alone, a friend has 7 of them and is looking to re home one. However, I'm trying to do research before I even consider anything.
Early neutering is not recommended especially for such small dogs they need their hormones to ensure that their bones grow properly they mature mentally and physically please don't neuter your dogs until they are at least 12 to 18 months old so they can have a long healthy life
Mine had to fight for her food so was afraid of eating. She would take her food and hide it for later. So i put her 1/4 a cup two times a day. She eats it when she is ready. She never overeats
Your furry friend is quite the strategist with her food! It's awesome you found a feeding routine that works for her. Cheers to a happy and healthy pet life! 🌟
They have open skulls, treat them like a newborn, they need extra calcium, have weak teeth that need frequent attention, and don't let them get too cold.
This is basic how to care for any dog. There are additional concerns when having a small dog. Protection is a big one! Basically you’ve got an infant/toddler for the next 10 to 20 years, and you’re going to have to protect them the entire time. You have to be hyper vigilant about their safety.

We took our chihuahua to puppy training but she got thrown half way across the room by another big dog, the trainer said they were just playing but now our chihuahua (penny) has a terrible fear of big dogs.
This is an old comment I know but that trainer is full of shit. A dog that big should not be messing with a small dog like that. They should've taught that dog some self control

Wow. I heard that they can live that long. Unfortunately, seems like the bigger a dog is the shorter their lifespan is. I wonder why is that. 🤔
Thanks for sharing your experience with us. Hope your chi gets well soon.
Wow!!!! I guess I better start saving up some money just for vet bill because I believe in taking care of my dogs health to the point some people criticize me but I don't care. I want them to be happy and healthy.
Step 1: put out a basket of warm laundry
Step 2: there is no Step 2! 😄
Thanks for watching! ✨

Thanks for leaving your valuable comment. Stay tuned for more.
Lol my Chihuahua behave the same way, she's sassy
Hmmm 🤨 I'm still adopting my intended Chihuahua. ❤😊

Amazing video. 🐶
My lovely bunny died recently (the one in my pfp) and now im thinking of getting a chihuahua! 💗
We're really sorry for your lost. And team Petopedia is wishing you good luck for new pet parenting!
This was very informative. Thank you.
Thanks for watching and appreciating our efforts! It really encourages a small team like us! 💕
I love my Chihuahua!
That's awesome! Chihuahuas bring so much joy. 🐾
I love Chihuahuas I have one I went to a shelter and saw a cute brown chi but we couldn't get him I wish we could get him as a friend for my chi cookie but the last time a saw him he was sad just waiting for someone to adopt him🥺
We have a dear-headed short hair fur baby. Her name is Lulu but she gets 'mouse' as a nickname. She is so mischievious!
Really helpful, thank you for sharing.
Glad it was helpful!
I wouldn’t call them “high maintenance”… Just gotta make sure you don’t squish them when they sleep under blankets. They do shed a lot more than you’d expect though…

I have a help question:
In September we rescued what was to be a 2 yo chihuahua (sight unseen).
Any ideas? Thanks.
Males will jockey for position in the pack. It’s not so bad when fixed but it’s still instinct.
They need an Alpha.
@@69bobr I don't recommend putting the pom in his crate for discipline. The crate is their safe place..their den. Not a place for punishment.
We are so sorry for your loss. Thanks for sharing your valuable opinion with us. Stay connected for more.

Glad to hear that!

Thanks.
Also, rinsing the rice gets rid of the arsenic too. Brown rice has the most, white has the least.
I honestly think homemade dog food is the best way to go. You at least know what is in it.
My Chihuahua was a non barker when she was young. Then out of nowhere she figured out she could bark. Hasn't shut the hell up since. 😂
Mines was the same way. One day she barked at my son when he was playing with my Chi. Lol. The only time she barks is when someone barks!! Lol
My chi only barks when there’s a stranger at the door 😊 and it’s really more of a little howl 😂 I don’t mind. Somehow she knows when it’s me coming home vs a stranger
Mine thinks he’s a pit bull, my pit bull is scared of him
My youngest Chi wasn't a barker at all but he does this little whine when he hears noise outside. He knows I find it cute so now he plays it up as he whines louder 😂
Dewormer? Never! I make a veggie and meat grind meal for my chi every other day, too which I add diatomaceous earth. No parasites :)
How much of everything do you use? For a toy chi

Yes, you have one.
Thank for the info 😎 I don't own a Chihuahua yet.
Thank for sharing your thought. Stay connected with us.
My boy came knowing how to manipulate humans, all I taught him was to quiet bark.
Chihuahua has a high vocal cord and barking problems. But you can train them to stay calm and social.
Thanks for sharing your experience. And it's really knowledgeable to us.
Same here. Our Chihuahuas will not even sniff the food if we aren't in the room with them
I LOVE all 3 of mine 😍😍😍
I'm interested to know, how long can they be left in the house alone?
I work four days on four days off 12hr shifts. I live alone, a friend has 7 of them and is looking to re home one. However, I'm trying to do research before I even consider anything.
Early neutering is not recommended especially for such small dogs they need their hormones to ensure that their bones grow properly they mature mentally and physically please don't neuter your dogs until they are at least 12 to 18 months old so they can have a long healthy life

This is basic how to care for any dog. There are additional concerns when having a small dog. Protection is a big one! Basically you’ve got an infant/toddler for the next 10 to 20 years, and you’re going to have to protect them the entire time. You have to be hyper vigilant about their safety.

You can give both. But we would suggest to give the cooked one as cooked meat doesn't have any bacteria!
