Thank you again, corporal, for another fantastic training video. Even this 58 yo grandmother can now use a compass. 😊 You are an excellent instructor, sir.
I just learned something new today, @ 50 years old. Thank you Corporal Kelly 😊🤙 You're never too old to learn. Every day is another day to gain wisdom and knowledge. 💯🤓
I wish I had that compus back when I was serving in the military. I was serving during the last part of the Vietnam area, and we had to use mathematics when using the compus. Wow how times changed. Keep up the good work and God bless you and your new bride 👰
I've seen this content multiple times. And it's good to get refreshers. Because the more you see it, the more you're likely to remember it when it counts. I used to carry a cheap compass as a teenager, but i never really knew how to use it, other than to find north, and pick a direction. A navigational compass like the one in the video is essential if you are in woods you don't know intimately. And probably even then.
Great video & a great refresher of what I was taught 70 years ago! In fact, I plan to use YOUR method to run a property line at our hunting lease. At age 82, I hope that I can remember how to do it & also be able to walk that far back in the woods. Hopefully, I'll have a younger adult with me to make sure that I do not experience difficulty. As a kid who grew up during WWII, I especially enjoy your no-nonsense videos in which you provide such clear instructions! Thanks, Corporal Kelly!
God bless sir ...I'm glad you can still play and work in the woods at 82 ! cheers ...I agree this Kelly guy is like the best teacher for Bushcraft and Survival !
This is my 3rd attempt to thank you for your kind words. Across the decades I have forgotten many of the skills which I learned in the early 1950s, but Cpl. Kelly does an excellent job in refreshing my memories. I grew up using mostly military surplus from WWII. During the early 1950s I did lots of "Compass Readings" to earn badges in Scouting. I sincerely appreciate your courteous & respectful reply to my earlier comments. May God bless you, too! Do you also have a TH-cam channel? All this is new to an Old Timer!
Navigation for dummies 😂😂😂 Thank you Corporal Kelly. It's so easy to follow your instructions and ACTUALLY NAVIGATE IN AN UNFAMILIAR TERRITORY. Thank you for your work!!!
My kids and I used to do orienteering back in the eighties. I sure felt better while the kids were in the woods.I knew they could find their way home. Then they did geocaching. There are so many ways to have fun and still be useful. Glad you made this content. Just the other day two lost hunters were located. They need to learn these skills before getting lost. Even if it was a youth hunt, they still need to be prepared.
These tips and tricks videos are almost like primers for what might be your on-line bushcraft class. Kind of like when the teacher used to say, “ now pay attention cause this might be on the test on Friday”. All the info you share is important. Thanks again I really enjoy these “Tips and Tricks”! Keep ‘‘em coming. Stay frosty corp 👍
Most dangerous thing in the field - a brand new 2nd Looie w/a map and compass. Stick with the Corporal! Good basic "how-to" on compass use, Shawn. Keep bringing the good stuff!
I appreciate you doing a compass video again. I watched the others and still did not feel confident that I fully understood. I am not sure as to why this one clicked but it did! Thank you!
Years ago when I first started watching you, that's when I finally learned how to use a compass. You've given these compass leasons a few times through the years, but it's great to have a refresher. I know you hate them, but I wish you would do a video on the military compass. I have one and would love to know all it can and can't do. As Always, Thanks for all you do.
I am the most "directionally challenged" person on the planet. My friends have knowingly allowed me to exit someplace, walk for 5 minutes in the wrong direction, then tell me we need to turn around. They say the only positive with my situation is the fact I know how bad I am at navigating and I never argue when they correct me. This video made complete sense to me. Hopefully, my friends will see a difference.
These are the tips & tricks you write into your notebook. Giving you piece of mind in a possible stressful situation. I really appreciate you CC. You are a great teacher. Thank you!
You explained how to use the compass very well. I was impressed. This coming from an old soldier that aced all three land navigation course tests at Fort Sill, Oklahoma 42 years ago.
Good morning! Just received my CC hardcore hammers survivalist hatchet! Wow, what a badass piece of gear! Thanks SK, I wouldn’t know about this if not for you. Mega thanks!
More useful knowledge! You don't realize just how useful until you find yourself turned around and it's getting darker and storms are moving in. Getting lost is no fun and with other factors added, it really sucks! Thanks for the instruction and watching out for us all!!
One thing I might add is a small notebook just to write azimuths down. If you park your car, go hang out in camp for a few days, use your compass out in the woods gathering firewood or water while at camp, then want to find your vehicle? Better to write stuff down so you remember how to get out. Also good to write down the GPS coordinates of that parking spot if you have the capability. It's also a good idea to have a paper topo map of the area you are out exploring for planned trips. Obviously if there is a slide or bridge washed out or something and you are in a true emergency where you need to leave your vehicle to get to higher ground, you might not have a random map of the spot where you ended up on a random road trip commute. But for planned camping, hunting, fishing, backpacking, etc.? You'll know where you're going in advance, and knowing how to use a topo map in addition to a compass will give you an additional tool to help keep you safe from getting lost if something goes awry with your navigation and you do somehow drift, or you need to navigate some hazard or emergency situation. Sometimes the best way out in an emergency when you can't go forward is not apparent unless you have a map. Apps can help, but you'll definitely get stuck if you over-rely on apps in places with no reception. Save your batteries, bring a map.
Thank you so much. For whatever reason this is the first time I have actually understood how to use a compass. I need to go back and review all the videos. By the way, I am 65 years old !!!😂😅😊
Perfect review for this week's family adventure. Thank you for the ten minutes that will be the discussion/practice topic as we enjoy a new semi-wild location on the far side of our province.
You mentioned dropping a deuce in the field while out and about in the woods. This is when a reverse azimuth comes in handy and can save your hide. I've heard of too many hikers who went to do the deed and couldn't find their way back to the trail they were on. A compass gets you back on the trail if anything else.
Totally Awesome Job on showing how to use the three tips !! Reminds me of the old days! Keep kicking ass and taking names and let the cry babies cry !!!! Hell Yeah!!! 🇺🇸🇺🇸🪓🔪👍👍
[Sir, I love your video's. I love your explanations and the dry humor lol. I've always been fascinated with compasses and wondered how to use them. At 49 years old, I now know how they work. Thank you. 👍🏼]
Excellent and clear instructions. For a waypoint marker I like to carry some blaze orange marker tape, using several feet of it to make sure it can be seen clearly.
I was going to say nice refresher but it really is the best and simplest tutorial for beginners I have seen. I explained it about the same way to a friend and he got it right away - we'll see in spring for how long it stuck as I'll be drilling him on the local survival kit I made for him...
Three great tips, I’m sure there are many people out there who would rank a compass along with a rotary phone, slide rule and an abacus. But it’s the first step in navigating without power or cell service.
Cpl Kelly, Hi from Australia. When cutting timber with a folding saw I always figure that you should be wearing gloves to prevent possible saw blade injuries if the blade skips from the cut. I keep a Mylar folded blanket with me on a walk. It takes up almost no space but in the case of a rain down pour or stuck on an unplanned overnighter. The Mylar blanket wards off the rain and keeps the body trunk ward. Good to cover a sleeping blanket is it gets a tad cold. I use a hollow alum tube with rubber end caps as my walking staff. It is 3'6" long and I put a wooden rod inside the tube. Given a rain shower I can extend the alum rod and I use duc tape to join the two together. Good as a tarp support. All FYI. Dave
Peg-leg-itis has prevented me doing anything like this for a very long time. Watching your vids though is just like being there :) !!! Thanks for everything you do - it's inspirational and entertaining.

Just saying.... You explain simple navigation better than anyone else I've watched. Thanks for sharing my friend 🤠
That's a good introduction to compass navigation. People sometimes do not get how important this skill is outside in the middle of nowhere.
I wish I had that compus back when I was serving in the military. I was serving during the last part of the Vietnam area, and we had to use mathematics when using the compus. Wow how times changed. Keep up the good work and God bless you and your new bride 👰
