Artis was the most underrated player of all time. And a very fine person. I had the occasion to meet and have lunch with him in the 1990s. Terrific guy.
Artis was one of the top ten centers to ever play in the NBA. He had a serious knee injury in 1979 that took away al lot of his mobility.. If the knee injury had not happened and he had been on better teams, he might have been even more dominant. He played Kareem as tough as Wilt did.
I saw Artis play many times at Freedom Hall in Louisville with the Colonels of the ABA. From about 1972 through 1976, the ABA was just as good a league as the NBA. And Artis was the best center in either league.
@@brianarbenz1329 Agree with you. I remember him playing at the Hemisphere Arena downtown San Antonio, as a visiting team playing for Kentucky Colonels of the ABA . I remember him shaking hands and hugging Spurs Iceman George Gervin and captain of Spurs J. Silas then.
Some centers had more mobility, better shooting touches, but none dominated Artis. When he got inside position, it was two points for The A-Train. Artis just never got the media attention and the talent around him to get the accolades that his career deserved. This man should've had at least 3 championship rings.
Ralph Sampson seemed shorter than his listed height of 7’4”. There are multiple photos of him standing with Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and the 7’2” Kareem seems as tall or taller than Ralph. The photos in question were taken when both men were wearing suits.
I always thought of Gilmore as just a knock-off version of Kareem but I learned he was a dominant player in his own right. Someone made a great tribute video for Gilmore: th-cam.com/video/M5EUU9UZWCc/w-d-xo.htmlsi=N-0o5Y84QCvlUK2J
If Ralph Sampson had not been overhyped in high school and just allowed to find his own level, he could have developed into a fine player. But all the broadcasters saying he would be another Wilt really hurt Ralph’s progress.
It is almost painful to watch. Some awful misses. The game truly evolved enormously. I say this with the utmost respect to da old fellas. They paved the way. But here are some awful missed the rim is being destroyed.
You need to look at more tape. His injury in 1986/87 put his development to an end, but Sampson and Olajuwon were awesome together. See 1986 WCF against Lakers...
Tom heinson was a good color man.. good head coach.. good player.. he did it all
Gilmore is so underrated. And this is near the near the end of his career.

what did you talk about?@@brianarbenz1329
I always say the biggest testimant of wilt being great in the modern era is watching old man artis still bodying the 80s bigmen well last his prime.
Good point
ARTIS was truly a POWERHOUSE
Gilmore was the better player. Artis was so underrated

We didn’t even get to see what Sampson would truly end up becoming at a peak I believe if he don’t get hurt he would be a top superstar.
@@tomcherne2717he's one of the strongest dudes in NBA history
My favorite Chicago Bull. I'm still mad they traded him to the Spurs 😊
I remember watching this game back 1983..Ralph Sampson's first NBA game...good memories
Great video. Gilmore was a great center. Never gets metioned.
Man Ralph could do it all... I'm glad I got to watch him pre-knee... such an innocuous slip and fall in Denver started his descent. Sad.
Ralph caught the A-Train.
I remember this game. Artis was muscling him something serious. If they were playing one on one it would have been a TKO.
I remember A. Gilmore when he was young coming to play in San Antonio.
He was then a player with ABA Kentucky Colonels team.
No he went to the Bulls first

@@riadanabtawi5880 I love the Spurs, with George Gervin, Billy "The Whopper" Paultz, and the most rollicking crowd in basketball. They were fun!
Great Upload!!
NBA was much more physical back when.Big difference from now.
Wally Walker was a big fan favorite in Seattle. And a decent off the bench player.
I was at that game. Lewis Lloyd and Phil Ford were the stars.
Sampson fast player ,injuries destroyed his career today he would be even better
I was always glad for Sampson. First game jitters!

The “A” Train
Tough matchup for Samson; Gilmore was great.
ATHLETICSM vs POWER
Prime Gilmore would have destroyed Sampson
agree
PRIME GILMORE and HAKEEM would have been awesome
Artis underated definitely on the defensive end
You need to be able to control the tempo in the NBA, back to the basket is key.
Great upload do you think Sampson could have been the goat PF if he stood healthy?
Hell to the N and O.
He had a lot of potential, but I don't think he'd ever reach the level of best PFs.

BOB LANIER vs RALP SAMPSON highlights👍✌️
Ralph was not strong mentally. He cracked under pressure regularly.

When we got Artis, it was a big deal…we had hopes of a chip…for sure.
why and how Tom Heinsohn commentating a Spurs - Houston game?
Heinsohn was a commentator on CBS's national broadcasts during this time period. 🏀🏀
Gilmore was as great as kareem.if he was in the NBA instead of the ABA
Sampson always had problems with physical centers i recall him getting destroyed in a game by veteran Billy paultz
In college Buck Williams of Maryland used to kick his ass.
@@PoliticusRex632 yeah he was not physical enough
@@manny4552 he would've been great in today's game
@@PoliticusRex632 it's alot less physical today so yes.. he was a decent player just never really lived up to all the hype

A Train!
He had some bad misses early.
Samson-18pts,12rb,3 ast,5 blk-Gilmor -16 pts,10,rb,4 blk.
One of the sloppiest pro games I have ever seen. They played like they were all on dope.
Sampson rushed way too many shots by not setting his feet to shoot. He cost himself a lot of points because of this

Disappointed with Sampson after watching this video

You should see yao's first few games, he was worse than Ralph his first few games. Ralph ended up winning rookie of the year that year.
Why?It was his 1 first game in the League, his team won the game and he had better stats in this than Artis-18,12,5-16,10,4.
Boo! Who cares about this game? We want to see some 60s basketball
