    If these videos have taught me anything, it's that I need to learn to weld.

      I can't tell the make and model from the video but I have taught myself mig welding by watching youtube vids and buying the cheapest mig I can find on ebay. I got hold of some scrap steel and just went at it. After a short time you realise the short comings of a super cheap machine and upgrade accordingly.

    • @TobyCatlin
      @TobyCatlin 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      DO IT! just buy a cheap welder stick or mig and just have at it. It is not that hard (as long as you are not expecting pretty) and super fun

    The fabrication skills and techniques on this build are impressive. Building up the platform inside with the insulation underneath so it isn't compressed is a sharp idea, as is using the lower temp fiberglass around the edges.

    well done very nice build. what size crucible is that it looks like a 35A clay/graphite but im not sure, i want to switch from using a fire extinguisher in my crucible. also if anyone decides to build this i would recommend just using an old oil drum it will save you alot of time thats what mine is made of.

    Very impressive furnace - I just pour the refractory cement on mine tonight - funny timing - I used ceramic blanket as well but I was told you need to protect it otherwise it will deteriorate quickly - see the burning on the feeding tube when you place 2 or 3 pcs of aluminum. Anyway great build as usual - great editing and music choice, a joy to watch !

  • @capnskustomworks
    @capnskustomworks 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Awesome work, brethren! I recently made a smaller one with a 15 gal oil drum, but I used perlite/plaster refractory mixture, and it's taking forever to dry the moisture out, so no thorough testing yet...

  • @tomherd4179
    @tomherd4179 8 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    Like your work, but want to make 2 safety suggestions. First, wear much safer clothing, shoes, face protection, etc., the aluminum (guessing?) is melting at about 1200 degrees F. Second, melt on sand base, not cement. If there is a spill any moisture in the cement will be drawn out and sort of explode throwing hot stuff everywhere.
    I want you to be around to be able to continue making great videos!

  • @michalrimmerak1646
    @michalrimmerak1646 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hello, very nice furnance. PS: If you add to your melted aluminium kitchen salt (in aluminium pipe or foil) and push it to bottom, and put the small wax candle on the surface , you will have much better results. No bubbles in castings.

    Hey mate, enjoyed the video as always...was hoping based on the title that you were building one to melt metal, not just aluminium...looking forward to the upgrade. If I can offer a tip, if you are going to be casting aluminium try to stick with melting previously cast aluminium rather than extruded pieces, you will get a better quality casting.

    You are obviously a very gifted welder/fabricator. Well done! If you spoke and explained anything I wouldn't know because after 3 minutes of the :headache music" I had to mute the video! Maybe consider either no music or music that doesn't distract from what you are doing. Honestly I couldn't concentrate on anything with the head-banging sound until I turned it off. Otherwise it's some of the best I've seen on TH-cam.

    Subscribed for sure..! Makes my tiny foundry seem like a toy..lol. Anyway, I only do small metal castings, so it meets my needs. A tip...if you don't want to spend money on expensive casting sand, you can make your own. Use fine sand from the beach and let it pass a sieve for further purification. Then add vegetable oil to it so you can form the mold. Old engine oil does it too, but I prefer to think of the environment if possible. I wouldn't recommend welding in bare arms as you did...no matter how hot it is. Those UV rays are the killer...just saying. Now I'll head on to your other videos, I'm already curious.

    *Unsealed* ceramic wool like you've used is **extremely** carcinogenic when heated. It throws off tiny bits of fiber that will give you "black lung" effects. Seal the surface of your wool with a slip like ITC100. That will also greatly increase the efficiency of the furnace.

    DAMN you're good! Very satisfying to watch. I'm researching different smelters for melting down large quantities of copper and came across your video. Granted, my home workshop is bigger than my living room but I don't have as many expensive tools like a plasma cutter. As always, I'll be using repurposed dumpster-diven parts I got laying around

    Awesome video but,one thing I don’t understand about these foundry/furnace is how you hook the propane tanks up to them. Does it need to be airtight around the pipe where the propane tank enters?

    Bending then cutting that tubing coil is just like making jump rings for jewelry...didn't think I'd see it in that scale!

    If your welder, saws-all, plasma cutting torch, and metal bender all disappear one night from your shop, don't come looking for me. B-) Wish I could afford some of that stuff. It's quite clear you're a very talented machinist and welder. Your furnace is very well done, sir! What might it's maximum sustained (continuous) temperature be?

    I didn't know there was insulation that could hold up to these temps. This looks easier to make and much lighter than all the ones using cast refractory cement.

    Looks good but you need to coat that liner when you rebuild it . The heat resistance material you used is not made to have fire come in direct contact with it . And will become brittle and fall apart when you are in the middle of a melt. And that will be extreme. I use fire clay on mine and melt steel with it. its hard to find and not cheap but it's good refactoring liner. " If done right"

    i am not sure but these unbound fibermats can be a serious health hazard size you run a constant hot airflow through, its blasts a lot of fibers in the air on you property.
    I would bind the mats winth some sort of beton/clay or similar fireproof stuff
