    The built-in EFI shell is a common feature amongst systems that use EFI. It's a basic tool that you can use to boot .efi images from connected drives among other things. Think of it like a command prompt / bash shell. It's very handy when you want to do something like flash the firmware of an add-in card like lsi sas card or a hard drive without having to boot into a more traditional OS.

      Thanks for the info. Sounds nifty - will have a more detailed look at this.

      Thanks - I tracked this down to a bug in Resolve, so fixed for future vids.

    Make sure your WD red drives are not smr drives you want cmr also disable the WD smart check after 3 years I hear it will flag the drives for age not looked much into that yet

      Thanks - I have ordered the CMRs - been super happy with my other WD Red drives over the years. Had lots of failures with Seagate, switched to WD and haven't looked back. Is WD smartcheck firmware or software? I generally never install the OEM software. Should I?

    Great video! Im curious what's the power consumption of this build?

    • @makerealstuff

      Thanks, and great question. I haven't measured it yet - from other videos I've seen it's about 100W idling (yes, a lot more than a SBC!), but I have a suspicion, that to get a meaningful measurement, I need to add in the spinning drives. So will give you an update when I've done that.

      Yikes. 100w plus disk power use. Thats WAY to high for me when most of my use is media server related

    • @makerealstuff

      Agree! If you're just looking to serve media (typically < 10MB/s), then this is not the solution for you. Check out the NanoPi R5C (th-cam.com/video/GsxuoSXb9A4/w-d-xo.html) - it's a beautiful little machine in a tiny package that you could easily plug USB / SATA SSDs into, and it draws almost no power.

    Hello, Could you please tell me the name of this motherboard? It is not in the comments or description, if you could also put the link of the one you bought it would be helpful. Thanks

    They don't test the memory. One of mine was bad and it was just easier ton buy another stick from ebay.

    What are your temps like after you have this installed in a case? I went with a cheap cooler, then upgraded the CPU fan (it's advertised at 3300 rpm but hasn't broke 2400 rpm yet).

    • @makerealstuff

      So far okay, but I haven't pushed all the cores with a heavy workload - I'll do some tests in a follow up - some others have asked for power consumption, and for that I need to stress the CPU and spinning disks, which should generate much more heat.

    What x99 board is this exactly? I would be interested in finding just the mobo. $180 is kinda steep for that setup to me

    • @makerealstuff

      Check out the Ali links in the comments - they sell the board alone on the same link. Curious that you find $180 steep - that's two RPis, or a N100 which have nowhere near the capability this thing does

    Opened this video - thought heck, i bought huananzhi few month ago, and 6 lans looks really cool. But wat da hell, this xeons has 4 channel memory, why there is only 2 dimms?

    • @makerealstuff

      Some of the other boards have 4 x dimm slots, but my primary need was for the 10 x SATA ports + NVMe + 6 x 2.5G ethernet ports. The SATA is also arranged on two controllers, so you can passthrough an entire controller to TrueNAS, bypassing Proxmox

    does anyone know what size this motherboard is? it says atx, but looks smaller to me will it fit the matx node 804?

    • @makerealstuff

      It's 214 x 185 mm - it's quite a lot smaller than ATX. I think some of the holes are in standard locations, but not sure - I ended up making my own sheet metal box

    Where can i buy the motherbaord and chassis?

    • @makerealstuff

      On AliExpress: www.aliexpress.com/item/1005006412358655.html
      It should fit into a standard PC box, but I ended up folding up a custom case so that I could have 8 x hot swap hdd bays
