Tell your dad to keep up the good work. I didn't start working with sheet metal until my 60s and it's a tough transition. Add to that diminished motor skills, worsening eyesight, and a whole lot less patience it can be tough. 😆 But it eventually comes around and the fact that you did it yourself makes you proud, almost as proud as when you see your kids and grandkids turning out their own great projects!!!
The easy way out on any project that is that rusted is to backhalf the car ...I had a Nova that was missing the trunk ,quarters and tail light panel and I replaced all that and backhalfed the car and it came out nice.. Flat steel panels are much easier to manage than making .. Is that a shortbed ??
Yeh I’m 57 and in my younger years my dad ran a custom hot rod shop and motorcycle shop I’ve learned over the last ten years to weld ad I’ve done mistakes that Cost me more time but I’ve got a lot better now right here in Iowa what junk yard I know a lot junk yards

Butt weld, angle blade so you are cutting at 45 degrees through both. Why it leaves a smaller gap to fill.
