  • Today, I'm going to talk about MD vs DO medical school admissions.
    The MD vs DO medical school debate is one that never seems to end.
    In doing online research, you might read things like:
    -The degrees are practically the same
    -As long as you're a doctor, that's all that matters
    -You’ll have access to the same opportunities regardless
    However, if you're deciding which programs to apply to, you’re probably less interested in political correctness and more interested in real talk about how a MD vs DO degree will impact your medical career.
    In this video, we'll go over the key differences between MD and DO programs and important considerations so you can decide which path is best for you.

    Shemmassian Academic Consulting (SAC) was founded by Dr. Shirag Shemmassian, a medical school admissions expert with over 15 years of experience helping thousands of students get into top programs such as Harvard, Mayo, and UCSF. Despite a roughly 40% medical school matriculation rate nationally, the SAC team’s approach has resulted in over 90% of their students getting accepted the first time they apply. SAC has been featured on The Washington Post, US News and World Report, and NBC.

    1.The current White house physician is a DO, and a Physician of Pres. Biden as well former Pres. Trump's physician was a DO.
    2.Top US Navy Physician is a DO.
    3. Dos are medical doctors just like MDs.
    4. Dos don't use MD because it has its own label and prestige.
    5. Dos learn to treat patients conventional medicine and holistic care OMT tenchique which MDs are not trained to do so.
    6. Survey's says Patients are more satisfied with DO's because they can treat pains by using the OMT technique before resorting to prescription meds.
    7. Do's are in any fileds of Surgery, Psychiatry, OBy Gyne, Pediatrics, Cardiology, Pulmonology, Dermatology etc.

      I am an orthopedic surgeon which is one of the hardest fields to enter as an MD graduate. As an MD, getting into an MD medical is unbelievably difficult as anyone in medicine knows. I was on my OB rotation when one one of the DO students took me aside and said regardless of what anyone tells you 99% of us applied to MD school and did not get in. There is also the uncomfortable truth that if they were not white or Asian they could have entered an MD school. Not being an underrepresented minority actually works against you. MDs are the cream of our medical system. If you go to any major University Hospital in America, those are all institutions that have a medical school that grant an MD degree, and you will have an unbelievably high chance of being seen by an MD. MD institutions select only the best applicants with the highest grades, MCAT scores, and everything being equal, as I've met in my colleagues, Olympic gold medalists, and a Navy SEAL. The best of the best. That is how they became an MD. The best residency training programs for doctors in America take first, United States MD graduates who have graduated at the top of their MD classes called 'AOA' or Alpha Omega Alpha. . The top residency training programs and hospitals, as this video doctor says, in America, are MD programs at MD medical schools. If you look at any list of top hospitals in America, they are all MD or allopathic training hospitals with medical schools which grant an MD . This Hasan Minaj joker, as an Indian or Pakistani, probably knows some people who were interested in medicine and found this out for him, and he made it into a cheap joke. All the Ivy League hospitals and medical schools are MD institutions. Sorry about the facts.

    I would not frame this as a "debate," per say. Career options are affected (for DO's in particular), with regards to subspecialty fellowship admissions - this is unfortunate and something I hope will become a thing of the past. As an MD, I can honestly say that one degree is not "better" than another. Both forms of education are equally as rigorous and involve just as many hours of patient exposure and the same board examinations.

    The Step 1 exam is going to be Pass/Fail exam in 2022. A lot of residency programs look at these exams when ranking candidates. How will this affect DO students vs MD students? Also with merger of both residency programs , will this put DO students at a disadvantage?

    • @Shemmassian
      @Shemmassian  4 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      Hi Sharon! You ask important questions.
      Step 1 is indeed going to be P/F in 2022, which likely means that other aspects of your residency applications--med school prestige, research, clinical evals, Step 2 scores, application essays--will carry more weight than ever.
      Some people take this to mean that DO students will be at increasing disadvantage for residencies. A DO student with an incredibly high Step 1 score might have had a good chance at a competitive residency in the past, but their chances might be diminished with the binary scoring system. I don't disagree. That said, keep in mind that DO students tend to achieve lower Step 1 scores on average relative to their MD counterparts. For folks who "barely passed" Step 1 in the past, the new scoring system will put them on the same Step 1 playing field as other students who simply passed.
      Regarding the residency merger: It's unclear at this point how the merger or Step 1 score change will impact residencies. On one hand, you have some folks who think it'll level the playing field because all opportunities will be available to all students. On the other hand, you have folks who think that DO physicians will be viewed as less competitive. Time will tell there.
      At the end of the day, consider what all of this means for you. You should still aim to do as well as you can in your coursework, research, rotations, and apps to maximize your chances.

    1.DOs are Medical Doctors although not using MD anymore.
    2.DOs are Competitive just like MDs.
    3.DOs can perform Osteopathic Manipulative Therapy that can cure and threat patients before prescribing medications which proves to be very effective base on testimonies from Patients and that MDs cannot do this procedure because their not train for it.
    so this means we can really tell which has more advantages.
    regarding the Mcat and Gpa scores, to me it should not be the issue because Mcatand Gpa ares not a guaranty that a student is a better than others, there are A students who enrolled in the osteopathy medical schools.
    but all of the two can work together as primary care provider.

    Your site suggests that DO schools require a letter from a physician for admission. This is no longer the case. I no longer accept pre-meds for shadowing since almost 100% just want a letter from me. I invite all of them to contact me in lieu of shadowing if they have questions. Not a single one ever has.
    I focus on osteopathic manipulation and almost all of my patients come because they didn't get what they wanted from an MD or a DO who doesn't practice this way.
    DO school will give you a unique education not available in an MD school but if you really want to be an osteopathic physician then you will also need to take more course like from the Osteopathic Cranial Academy or the AAO ( American Academy of Osteopathy).

    "However this is only because MD physicians tend to specialize and practice in urban areas" - Maybe MDs work in urban areas cause urban areas pay better and they were able to get the job cause they were better qualified than DOs on average, rather than that their personalities enjoy living in urban areas more

    • @xplicitgoofy1015
      @xplicitgoofy1015 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      This is completely false there are a huge amount of DOs practicing in Urban areas and a job doesn’t simply look at MD or DO and see which one is better for the job because they have the exact same qualifications you learn the exact same things in your residency training doesn’t matter what degrees you have a hospital is looking for good doctors and qualified ones why in the world would they want to pick an MD when let’s say a DO is more qualified ? That being said there is no disadvantage to both DOs or MDs because they learn the exact same things as each other just DOs have to do some special training that 95% don’t even incorporate but they have to do it because that’s what their training course requires

    • @vangmountain
      @vangmountain ปีที่แล้ว

      @@xplicitgoofy1015 Agreed. The Qualifications of an indivial have zero to do with their degrees. What does is the person. You have MD's who are less qualified than DO's and vice versa. Just because one is DO does NOT automatically make them less qualified. The difference maker is the person not the degree. You are going to have stellar folks and less-than-stellar folks on both sides. To imply MD is more qualified is to say that the very lowest MD is more qualified than all DO which is absolutely fasle.

    I feel like the MD vs DO question is like asking if Apple or Samsung produces a better product. Apple is more popular..... but as we all know popularity doesn't = "better". They both make a great phone and they are more similar than they are different. It really just comes down to preference.
    People always bring up the fact that there are more MDs in more competitive specialties than DOs so therefore MDs must be better. I don't agree. The doctors in charge of selecting medical graduates for these residencies are predominately MDs and in general there are less DO applicants than there are MD. It's like asking someone who has used apple products their whole life to rank a group of smart phones that are 75% iPhones and 25% Samsungs and then coming to the conclusion that Apple is better because they ranked iPhones higher than Samsungs. Classic familiarity bias.

    MD is more recognized around the world. So if you ever relocate to a different country an MD would be less of a hassle. Plus I feel like DOs are always justifying why their degree is equal to MD. So if you have the choice why choose to be a potential underdog?
