Head to Head 3D Scanner Test - MIRACO vs. LEO - steering rack test

- I need a scan of my steering rack and some critical dimensions for the suspension design. It's time to test our scanners. I put the Revopoint MIRACO scanner head to head with an Artec LEO. These are not comparible scanners based on price, but will they stack up?

Informative, as always. Thanks Craig.
Glad you found it helpful!
Amazing scanning experience!
I run a small workshop, and I've always had issues with 3d scanning services being delayed for various reasons. So, I decided to learn 3d scanning by myself.
Miraco seemed like a nice choice lol I just bought one using your discount code (from your other miraco video). Funny thing-maybe it's a bug?🤪 I ended up getting an even better deal (better than the 7% discount code). such a nice surprise thxxxx!
That's awesome. I hope the videos help with the learning curve.
That seems like it takes a very long time to scan the part. I have a Einstar Vega that seems to be much faster than that. It is amazing how quickly this technology is evolving. Nice shirt by the way ;)
Interesting...both these units took a fair bit of time for this part. I'd be very interested to see how your scanner would work on a similar part.
@@ThrottleStopGarage It could just be my perception of it. I have only had a small play with it so far, so we will see how it goes.
Each scan from start to finish probably took 20 minutes. I scanned them multiple times, playing with settings to optimize the scans. The MIRACO does allow me to pause and undo bad scans...the LEO does that in post. By the time it's fully rendered and done it's about an hour or so.
Ughhh I got so much work to finish tonight…..
Why did you have to drop this tonight!? 😂 love the series so far 🍿🇨🇦
Sorry about that. I hope the work is fun.
nice presentation - happy new year to you
Thank you! You too!
This is highly relevant to my interests. I just got a 3D printer from Santa and would love to get some nice models going. Thanks!
Glad it was helpful. Enjoy your new tools.
Your car is going to be great!
Thanks. Should be making steady progress now.
Great job on the scans. The "budget" scanners are good for hobbyists if you are not concerned about super high detail/accuracy. The software is a bit clunky on those too. The Artec looks like it did a decent job. I have been scanning for about 10 years with a bunch of different types of scanners. I currently run a Creaform Handyscan 700 and like the Leo it was not cheap. I bought it used 7 years ago for $55k. I also use Aesub Blue self dissipating scanning spray. Its about $38/can here in the US. Love seeing the technology being used like this :) I have a couple scanning vids on my channel.
Thanks for sharing your experience. It was great when they overlaid without an issue. Makes you wonder what 5 more years of development will bring.
@@ThrottleStopGarage I do know that the newer blue laser scanners from Creaform and a few others are even faster with the same accuracy and don't need any dulling spray at all. They will scan chrome. Insanely expensive though. I think the new Black Elite from Creaform is north of $75k all in.
Holy smokes, 43k is a serious investment.
For sure. I will do a little more scanning later as I have some parts to build. Mostly, I don't need the big scanner in the garage.
Thanks for this! I ended up ordering a Miraco plus a couple days ago (after watching your other video on the Miraco), and it sounds like for the price point it's not a bad buy (even for a few hundred more than the "regular" Miraco).
I'll be interested to see what my workflow with it turns out to be. I'm initially envisioning using scans to get dimensions, and then building a "clean" model from those in Rhino, but i guess I'll find out!
I'm glad you've found this useful. The learning curve can be steep. There are software packages that can thin the points in the model and make them easier to use.
@@ThrottleStopGarage Oh yeah, I'm under no delusions this is something that I'll pick up and immediately get great results with. Well be interested to see how fast I can climb that leaving curve, though (which I think will include learning how to use the Revoscan software for initial processing before bringing things into Rhino).
Fortunately I got a good connection with a flight school that has an in-house maintenance operation, so I'm hoping I can get some access to good test specimens.
Instead of using a suspension / spray, I wonder if a powder coating gun with talc and the static attraction of the media, might work?
It was super easy to mix this in the cheap mini gun. Clean up was easy... I'd rather not drag out my powder equipment for this. Either way...much better than $100 for a can of spray.
@@ThrottleStopGarage Hi, why the 3d scanning spray is so expensive ? import taxes ? look at AESUB brand, it's wayyyy cheaper than 100$. Wish you the best sir.
@@kermitahnenerbe3722 I don't know why it's so expensive - but AESUB is over $100 for me on Amazon. The cheapest I've seen it is $70 plus shipping in Canada.
@@ThrottleStopGarage Oh F, it's half the price in France.
is it making it hard for the scanner that the rack is rocking around in the air?
It was only moving the one time and it didn't matter. It's the shape. The cylinder has no sense of orientation in the long axis...so if all the scanner can see is that part, it gets messed up. The balled up tape helped.
So weird how US, UK and Canada pronounce the word "composite" three different ways. I was going to say, why dont you use chalk spray that will wash off with soapy water and the I saw your results. Wow.. That is really good.
The spice of life!
Craig, As meticulus as you are I can't believe you used a tape measure to come up with that 618 number. From what i could see the tape had a bow in it as you had to go around some features on the rack, if so that # can't be up to your standards. If you don't already have one I think that a set trammels would allow you to get a more meticulousus number. I've gotta watch you like a hawk, haha. (truth be told I don't think you would be able to notice the 2,3mm difference anyway) Just so you know I still dig your stuff I bought a Tee shirt!!
I dis mock myself as I was doing the tape measure thing. Truth is...it's in CAD and I can double check it there. Thanks for buying the shirt and for keeping an eye on me.
@@ThrottleStopGarage Ah yes, trammels are old school, just like me!

Thanks
Precisely measuring nothing. 😂❤

LOL ... not a chemist or baker!
the leo seems like a big scam i mean maybe it was okay a few years ago but right now any used Einscan HX is 10x better than this and 4x cheaper xD
Time marches on, that's for sure. The LEO does work really well for large objects outside.
@ThrottleStopGarage Artec was just really lacking with no markers supported for s long time, and thats shit for big parts
