Pikemen are my favorites. Tanky af against crossbow and fire, only weakness are arrows abd these i counter with crossbow. Really nice troop.

You cannot protect your archers from enemy archers by using pikeman as shields. Enemy archers will prioritize attacks on your archers first

As far as I know pikemen do not have great armor, like swordmen. They do have a great hp pool. I think mixing them with any other slow unit is great.

I never use pikeman. i use only:
defence: crossbowman, shield, balista, horse archer.
offense: catapult, horse archer, shield, assasin.

@@ONTOSENODUGAL Monk cost 10 Gold, which is like a free unit. Monks can be very cost efficient early game, when trading with melee.
