The best Game Boy made! Feels fantastic and an amazing library!!! Also my favorite to mod back in the day. You picked some amazing titles in here (no surprise) great vid my friend! I’m playing catch up 😉❤️🎮
I finally started playing Fantastic 4 that I picked up as SEGE and I can confirm this game is great. It ranks up there with astroboy for me. If I could add a game back it would be the Medabots RPG...I cant remember which it is but its great and its very expensive.
Bought the AGB one with IPS screen today and it feels awesome to play it. We never had that GameBoy culture here in Russia and you just somehow emanated it through your video. I watched several videos about GBA but no one was so "homie" like this one. Glad to find this channel.
By the way, Car Battler Joe is a sequel to Vatlva (Car Battler Jim) on the Sega Saturn. It's a completely different game there, a top down car combat title with a different weapon assigned to each of the controller's six face buttons.
As a hobbyist programmer, I know the Game Boy Advance both inside and out, and I love that little machine to pieces. It's the first handheld game system with muscle, featuring scaling, rotation, tons of color, tons of sprites, and even polygons when pushed to its limits. You can even emulate older systems on this thing!
@@SquarePegs I made a homebrew game based on the arcade oldie GORF. The development environment was Jeff Massung's Dragon BASIC, which takes advantage of many of the system's features, including digitized sound samples.
That's so cool! I'm really impressed - I'm a software QA lifer, so anytime I hear about someone actually creating and not breaking software I get excited for them. :) Congratulations (and thank you so much for watching and responding!)
Great video! Would love to see you discuss more consoles like this. I am actually in the middle of my first play through of Final Fantasy I using the GBA cart you mentioned. Really enjoying it. As much as I love the GBA SP I have recently switched over to the Analogue Pocket. Favorite GBA games not mentioned in your video are Mario vs. Donkey Kong, Metroid Zero Mission and Metroid Fusion.
...call it FIGHT HOUSE and you've got a roster where you can swap to every member of the Full House crew. Shoot. That'll live rent free in my head for years, now.
So the Fave game is Castlevania Harmony of Dissonance, and my Fave way to play is with the 100% modded GBA I got at SEGE 2023. Miss you man. Hope to see you again soon.
I like the GBA, so many great games on it. That GBA SP looks really cool too,, that style is cool with the flip and Homage to the original NES controller 👍
Looks like I have a ton of new games to play on gba. Yes please mod that NES GBA with the AG 101 screen I play on an original gba with a AG 101 screen. I like how it’s a bit wider to hold
What a fantastic video brother! Great information and a list of wonderful games as well! I might just have to do a GBA buyers guide if my own now. You’ve inspired me! Awesome content as always my friend!
I love the GBA and I've spent more hours than I care to admit watching the GBA Video carts. Yet I don't often play on the system itself and do emulate the games more often. Part of it is that I don't want to risk damaging the hardware by fitting a better screen. The main part though I admit is that save states have spoilt me. I love being able to play and just save when I want to, it's being able to just go back to a favourite moment in a game or go back to a decision and see what happens if I make a different choice (often not much).
It's a stunning little machine. I've been pondering adding a GBA (most likely an SP) fir a while. I've used my DS lite for GBA games for a while, but only have a Game Cube Gameboy Player for GB games, whitch is great, but they really should be played handheld. I really should just pull the trigger on an SP. You really need to stop influencing me 😂
Personally I wouldn’t touch it unless maybe if it breaks and even then I’d probably put it back on its original glory. I would honestly buy another one to mod. Even better if it mostly works but the screen needs to be replaced.
@@SquarePegs There are also some repro NES-style GBA SP cases that look pretty authentic if you want a backlit version. But I still love my frontlit GBA SP (the NES one!) because it works great in direct sunlight *and* in poorly lit areas, whereas my GBA that I modded with a backlit AGS-101 screen can't be played outdoors very well. So there's still a lot going for that original model. The GBA SP is super portable so I love it, but I think the regular GBA is still my favorite form factor and is definitely more comfortable, especially with the shoulder buttons. Thanks for the walk down GBA memories! That little booklet with the GBA SP is so neat - I got my NES GBA SP used at GameStop years ago so I never had the box, but it was also my daily driver for a long time.
When it comes to modding handhelds I'm kind of weird. I'm a bit of a purist. If it came with a shitty screen I want it to keep that shitty screen unless it malfunctions. Having that said if ya love that NES style SP, buy another, more beat up SP for cheap and put a backlit screen in that one. (and maybe a new shell too of course :P)
@@SquarePegs For sure! I'm doing the same thing with a DMG-01. I have one in minty condition, and no yellowing. I wanna keep that Mountain Dew colored screen and buy another DMG just to customize hahah
there is a reason to this very day that companies still copy the form and style of the entire game boy line. That and the games are going to out last any disc from the same era.
There's always going to be a weird divide - people who only love retro, people who only love modern, and then the rest of us in the middle just quietly enjoying the games we like, no matter when they released or where we play them. :)

I adore Minish Cap. Thanks for the callout!

The amount of great platformers/side-scrolling games on the GBA is astounding. Maybe the perfect 2D console.

All my favorite Zelda games are made by Capcom. Seasons, Ages, and Minish Cap are easily the GOAT
We are united in our Capcom Zelda love.

Agreed on all parts.
the ds line itself was just basically a different type of gameboy in itself.
