  • Relocating and moving far away from home is emotionally draining. You're leaving everything and everyone behind and putting yourself in a situation where you know nothing and no one. Following a chance encounter with a couple that arrived on the Sunshine Coast a few months ago, Val and Paul reminisce about their first few years in Gibsons.
    TL;DR - Making new friends is hard but it's worth it.

    Great video, welcome back, I moved here two years after you did. Joined the Gibsons Yacht Club, that helped, my Dog introduces me to new people daily. I used to go back to Vancouver twice a month, but now, maybe twice a year.

      If you're social, you'll make friends fast. Even grumpy Paul managed to make friends! 😂

    Hi There..We moved from Manchester in the UK straight to Pender Harbour in 2008.
    From one of the UKs biggest cities to small town Canada ..quite a move and a challenge too.
    However as soon as we got to explore our new home and area..we slotted in nicely ..day 2 we were invited to join a Dragon Boat crew..something we had never seen in England..that was fun and instantly had 23 new folks in our lives..some are still our best friends to this day..15rs down the line.Another great way was volunteering.. on "The Coast"you could volunteer for some activity almost every day to keep occupied..I joined the Fire Dept as a volunteer and my partner Deb joined Unit 61 Search and Rescue...both really worthwhile and fantastic training in lots of skills...for free..just for your time..The Canadian Legion is always in need of volunteers.
    Work in a store ..that was great for both of us..the IGA is a great place to meet new friends ..work and get paid to for having a working social life..brilliant.
    These are just a few things that got us out there into the community and got folks to know us and us them..never any need to be lonely or homesick..way too much to do to in this great small town Canada area .

    We stayed!!! We are still watching you guys :) We found it the opposite, in Calgary we just worked and we’re hermits but out here it’s been super easy to meet people (probably cause of our kids) but it’s been great! Love the coast, when we listed it was to be closer to family but we are happy we are staying and hope to see you guys again.

    I went to the Library in my village and that helped a lot! Plus started going to the church here and any kind community involvement really gets you connected. I'm an introvert so it took me a couple of years to step out and do it though!!

    Absolutely love these podcast style videos! I’m from Saskatchewan but my family has strong ties to Gibsons and we’ve kept our family house in Langdale. I’ve visited multiple times every year for the past 20+ years. This podcast has been great to be kept in the loop with what’s been going on on the coast 👍🏼
    I’m a freelance videographer and am planning to stay in Gibsons for all of January and February. Hoping shoot some video work for some locally owned businesses in the area! Keep up the great work you two!

    I visited sunshine coast once and I loved it. I heard that the water utility is annual based. Could you introduce more about the general living expense or the uniqueness in that area?

    • @LiveontheSunshineCoast
      @LiveontheSunshineCoast  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The water utility has since become metered in most areas with other areas due for the update. We get a water and waste bill twice a year.

    Are you still Oilers fans? That may have been the issue right there 😊 (jk)

    • @LiveontheSunshineCoast
      @LiveontheSunshineCoast  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I am still an Oilers fan, though I watch far less hockey now than I did when I lived in Edmonton.
      You're joking but there's an element of truth to what you said. In Edmonton, sports were a huge part of my social circle. We went to games or to sports bars, played in fantasy leagues, and would dissect games/players/management non-stop. Living in BC means I miss out on all Oilers news and gossip. Which, in retrospect, I think, is a good thing. I spend more time outside or being creative instead of fixating on the NHL.
