I remember falling in love with this show back in the early 70's when I watched it on WDCA (a UHF station out of Washington D.C.) Ultraman was one of the afternoon shows hosted by Captain 20. Once, there was a daily drawing for a bicycle. The kid whose name was picked had to choose between three hamsters in a race. Each one represented a particular show in the afternoon lineup. If the kid picked the winning hamster they'd win the bike. I put my name in, thinking that I would eventually be picked. My folks kept explaining that the chance of that happening was very slim, but it never sank in. Then one day, my mom nearly keeled over when she answered the phone: Captain 20 had called me! One of hamsters was the Ultraman one, so naturally I picked that one. It won! Needless to say, I went bonkers with joy. So I had the pleasure of telling my mom, "Told ya so!" 😁 Some time later, all the winners were invited to the studio to be in a promo spot for Captain 20's show. My 5 minutes of fame so to speak. I gotta say, I rode the hell outta that Roadmaster! Later, another actor took over as Captain 20, as well as playing Creature Feature horror host Count Gore de Vol on Saturday nights.
@@dogface11b71 OMG, where did you live when you watched Captain 20? I lived in PG County and then moved to Springfield in FFX County. I too was a member of the Captain 20 club. I remember the card that I was issued too. Fun fact: when I was going to George Mason University. I'd literally drive past Dave Grohl's house commuting there. Small world!
These videos definitely give me a greater appreciation for Ultraman. I am part of a very small minority that was exposed to Spectreman first. I just didnt really care for Ultraman back in the day up until the last 10 years or so, with a few tiny exceptions. Although I knew Ultraman was a Tsuburaya creation, and that I loved Godzilla, Toho, and all that, I felt I had to watch it (if i was ever able to catch it on tv ever)out of respect for Tsuburaya sensei, rather than because I wanted to watch it and enjoyed it. Also, for the fact that Japanese monsters were not well represented on TV back then, save for Godzilla (and even that was rough). It was tough being an obsessed japanese monster movie fan. Ultraman was always on my radar because he was always mentioned in any publication dealing with Kaiju that I was able to get my hands on (August Ragone really pushed Ultraman, and I credit him for showing me how cool the original series was). I guess I just didn't care for most of the monsters on that show, and how many goddamned spinoffs/incarnations Ultraman had. It mad it seem more tedious to get into, possibly? iI am not too sure, really . Also.....so many Ultraman type heroes too keep up with. I know...Spectreman was a cheap rip off. I guess it just was Spectreman being the first I saw. I guess Ultraman-esque Tokusatsu is comparable to Bruceploitation, maybe? Hell.....I love Bruceploitation a lot, as well! Just not more than Bruce Lee, hahaha! Also, the Spectreman theme was just WAAAAY more kick-ass ...both Japanese and American.I had to add that. But now...by watching your channel and a few others, I have seen so many great monsters, that I am making it a point to immerse myself in Ultraman. I did really get in to Ultra Q about 10 years ago, and glad I did. Recently also enjoyed that one TV show that had a kid and a magician fight monsters and such. I still don't know the name, but it is super cool to look at. I really have to thank you, and some others, for helping me get in to new things.....especially Ultraman. I am starting to enjoy the series more and more. I will say that, and I know this is an unpopular opinion comparable to liking Godzilla 98, the Ultraman from 93-94 that was made in Australia was one that I enjoyed the most upon it's initial airing. I was about 10, and the monsters were pretty cool. Plus I could get them at an actual store, rather than search everywhere in the US for some tiny comic shop that maybe had them. Shame that there are hardly any Spectreman figures, though. Again. Thank you, Prof, for all you do. This is a damn good video. going to use this as a reference point to finding episodes that certain kaiju are in! Post Script.....I do apologize for being long winded today. Forgive me. ANYONE on here...Professor Included....who knows the black and white japanese tv show i speak of? The one with the kid and the magician with a top hat that fight monsters?
I want to say I agree with everything you said about Spectreman. I grew up watching mostly Spectreman though Ultraman was available as well. The theme song was and still is simply more awesome though I certainly respect the Ultraman one. I've heard that Spectreman was a knock off but I just liked it better and thought it the opposite so I didn't care about Ultraman as much. And later on just like you said, there is just way too many variations to catch up on and keep up with. So I'm loving these videos that I just discovered and I bought a couple of beautiful Ultraman figures at my local retro shop here in Ohio. Sadly have not found a Spectreman figure like these especially for a reasonable price and I refuse to overpay. I like the animated Ultraman series on Netflix currently. Hopefully they make more. I don't understand everything but it's pretty cool. Anyway, it was nice reading your comment. I'm not sure about the b&w show you mentioned.
I think they need to make a survival horror game with Ultra Kaiju as the enemies while the player character is just a normal person, no Ultraman and Science Patrol will help you.
Last time I saw some of this footage was about 45 years ago, watching "Ultraman" on Captain Cosmic in the late seventies when I was growing up in California.
Keronia's reveal is obviously THE BEST entrance in not only Ultraman, but all of tokusatsu. Compared to that masterclass of tension and surprise all the others are just subpar, but even so I'll rank my favorites that are still far below Keronia. #3: Pestar. One thing that was always notable about Pestar to me is that the star shapes on his body distract you from the head, which is small and batlike and doesn't really fit. And in most full body shots you wouldn't even notice it, since his body is so big. This is why the intro scene is so good: it introduces the stars first, then DEMANDS you focus on the head as it's whipping itself around and letting loose its iconic shrieks. It makes you appreciate all of the design and I love it for that. #2: Telesdon. There's a lot of "kaiju emerges from underground/a cliff" intros in these videos, but if I had to pick the best one, it would probably be Telesdon. (Second place would be Magular, but that's an entirely different list.) I just love how the road bulges upwards as Telesdon rises from beneath, and then we get a second to stare at the silhouette of its bizarrely shaped face before it lets out its roar. Then, my favorite part, it continues climbing out of the hole and we see its back and tail. Usually we only get to see the upper section of the kaiju during their reveal, and I love how this one draws attention to Telesdon's worm-like tail and that weird fin that you wouldn't notice otherwise. #1: Zaragas. This kaiju was built to be imposing, the creature that causes blindness and only gets stronger the more you hit it, so it fits that this thing would have a notable entrance: a massive pillar of red smoke shooting up from underground, with Zaragas himself emerging from the haze. The cinematography here is also fantastic, giving us plenty of things in the foreground that we have to look past to see Zaragas. It makes the shot a lot more interesting and gives Zaragas a great first impression, as a kaiju that really is here to spread destruction and generally be a pain in the behind. Then again, that's just me. Everyone has their different opinions, but we can all universally agree Keronia has the best entrance. There's no contest on that one.
Keronia’s is my favorite too, only because he was in an expensive suit… 8:50 Btw I thinks he’s underrated, he’s a cool monster and had one of the best fights in the series!
Dada's intro is underrated, it's kind of unsettling how he just appears in the room without any fanfare. And while it doesn't count as a reveal, the scene where he grows giant and rises from the building with a few lightning flashes is really cool as well
all of tokusatsu? doubt. my opinion is shaky since i havent watched ultraman 66, but i still hold firm that leugocyte's appearence is fucking majestic. the only good thing to come out of r/b is aizen and leugocyte. and horoboros. everything else can be ignored.
This channel is great! its like wikizila but not just godzilla its tokusatsu! From everything ultraman kamen rider and super sentai. Without this channel no one would have learned more about their favorite toku villains and heros.
Keronia suffered the same problem Baltan had, he started off strong and unsettling, but then that all gets thrown out the window when they grow giant, atleast Keronia had a far better fight scene, I guess
I'll admit when I first saw the title for the Jirass episode, I figured his name was a take-off on the word Jurassic. Then I saw him and it clicked. Also, isn't Alien Zetton just Kemular from Ultra-Q wearing a suit?
I love this kaiju reveal, I just wish this would be implied in the shin ultraman movie with Gomess by showing a scene of a miner us in his flashlight only to see the eye of gomess. It’s just a really cool scene! 0:40 Although gyango was a little too goofy and came from in my opinion the worst episode of this series, he does have a cool entrance. 3:03

12:15 that has to be the most creative way to introduce a kaiju back then
Weird that it has gold boobs
Any reveal of a Kaiju coming up from the ground or a mountain is awesome.
My first and favorite Godzilla reveal was 1964's Godzilla vs Mothra aka Godzilla vs The Thing, where he came out of the ground! Beautiful!
