Great suggestion re the Colliwobbles video Many don't understand just how broken the collective psyches of the Collingwood faithful had become. I think many truly thought that dark forces were conspiring against them , particularly after blowing seemingly unassailable leads in 70 and 77 and then the Harmes incident in 79. I have only attended two Grand Finals in my life with the latter being the 1990 drought breaker. I sat next to a Collingwood supporting lady who I guess would have been in her 60's. About half way through the last quarter it became apparent that the Bombers were gone and I congratulated her and said I was pleased her side was going to win. She was not pleased with my over confidence and shut me down immediately, refusing to accept her team would win until she heard a siren When the siren eventually went I found myself being hugged by a lady whom I'd never seen to that day and haven't seen since with tears of joy running down her face. It was at this point I realised the true nature of the psychological torment the Collingwood supporters had been through. Not only would this be a fascinating historical vid ripe for Gaz's wit , but also because I take some weird pleasure from the suffering of Collingwood supporters.

That's a real interesting look into how a drought like that affects supporters
It's a really fascinating case. All the other long droughts seem to have concrete reasoning behind them - country zoning (Melb, StK), poor suburban zones (NM, Haw, SM to an extent), and financial reasons (Sydney, Bulldogs, Fitzroy).
The Colliwobbles are perhaps the only drought actively caused by expectations and pressure within the club, and certainly the drought period with the highest percentage of thrown-away wins.
If I were to do a history of Collingwood, or indeed just a Colliwobbles vid, dissecting those games would be quite interesting

As a Pies supporter myself, I would be very interested in a video on that. To be honest, I don’t think the collective psyche of the Collingwood faithful was truly repaired or mostly repaired until we won last year’s Grand Final by 4 points. I know for a fact that I was very much a nervous wreck all game and when Brisbane started to get momentum in that game, I was thinking “Oh no, not again… Please not again… For the love of God, I can’t go through with this again…”.
Something that has gone through the heads of many Pies supporters during many Grand Finals since 1958. The difference this time was that the players didn’t let that history define them this time. They didn’t let those past failures affect them and had the mindset that they could win even when things were incredibly tight.
I even remember screaming “We’re not cursed! We’re not cursed!” almost in tears of joy as the final siren sounded. It honestly felt like something massive had been lifted off the club, Even more so than 1990. 1990 might have proved that we can win Grand Finals if things fall the right way but 2023 proved that we can win them close and that there is nothing conspiring against us. It truly felt like the Pies had finally turned a new page.
I feel like what really played into the Colliwobbles and the team’s struggles in Grand Finals since the 1958 Premiership is the “Us vs. Them/Love ‘Em or Hate ‘Em” mentality when it comes to Collingwood.
You truly feel isolated and unwanted as a Pies Supporter when you’re with opposition supporters sometimes which is kinda weird considering that since 1958, We’ve only won 3 Premierships. Same amount as the Brisbane Lions and only ahead of Adelaide and the Sydney Swans both on 2, St Kilda, Port Adelaide and the Western Bulldogs all on 1 & Fremantle, GWS, Gold Coast and the long-suffering Fitzroy who haven’t played in the AFL since 1996 all on zero.
What do they have in common? They’re all either long-suffering cellar dwellers, Expansion Teams or Port Adelaide who are their own weird case.
Normally, the supporters of those type of teams who have had Premiership Futility normally tend to get treated a bit nicer by opposition supporters. They won’t rub in any lack of success, They’ll normally be polite to you even if their team loses, They won’t joke about your team’s worst moments and are very much willing to be sympathetic and say stuff like “Don’t worry, You’ll be on top again one day.”.
Due to a number of factors (the 13 Premierships between 1902 and 1958 leading to multiple generations of opposition supporters gaining a hatred and resentment against the club, Collingwood being an overachieving team in everything except Grand Finals, The many controversies the club has had, The rivalries that were set during that era of success still burning hot leading to generations of oppositions supporters since gaining a hatred and resentment against the club, Eddie McGuire never knowing when to shut his mouth during his stint as Club President, etc.), It’s pretty much the complete opposite as a Collingwood supporter…
You get treated by some people like you’ve just done something incredibly heinous just by supporting them and treated with disgust by others…
You’ll have Collingwood’s worst moments repeated again and again and thrown in your face, You’ll hear the same old tired Collingwood jokes again and again like how we need a choking hazard because of how often we choke or how our supporters have no teeth and are on the dole (IMO, It wasn’t that funny the first time, Let alone the 3,027th time…), you’ll never see the club happily acknowledged as doing well and normally have any success the Pies have downplayed (The amount of times I heard over the 2022 off-season that 2022 was our best shot at a flag and how we blew it was insane…), you’ll happily have people willing to stick the boot in whenever Collingwood is struggling, made a mistake or lost a big game in any sort of fashion and when Collingwood does have success or wins any big games, you have a good chance of getting abuse from someone for even daring to celebrate it and not bemoan it as the worst thing to have ever happened in the history of the world….
You honestly feel like you can't be completely honest about footy or show your true colours at times lest you be berated for it by opposition supporters. You feel like you must either go into hiding about the fact you go for Collingwood or just snap back at them to deal with it. It can be quite isolating and frustrating to go through having all of this thrown at you just for the simple fact you go for this one club.
It also gives the opposite effect when you do meet another Pies supporter or happen to be friends or in a relationship with another one. It feels like so exciting and such a relief to just talk to someone about how you feel about your club and footy in general without having to deal with grief about who you follow. It feels liberating in a sense, you truly get to be your true self without having to hide it or deal with people who don’t like it.
It does lead to a culture where the club itself feels like family to Pies supporters because it kinda does. We’ve been othered by the rest of the football public in a way and all we have left is each other and this club that we love so much. You need to love Collingwood massively if you’re going to follow Collingwood because if you don’t, you will have any respect and admiration beaten out of you very quickly by everyone else.
Due to these factors above, is it any wonder that Pies supporters started to get very superstitious on Grand Final Day and fell like a dark force, fate or whatever you may believe in was conspiring against them?
Having to go through all that grief from opposition supporters that hate our guts for supporting the club all the time and then having the same damn thing happen again and again and again while the abuse and mockery continued to grow and grow, you’d have to wonder if fate was against you... No-one would happily choose to go through any of that...
Of course you’d start to wonder if something in the universe was against you, Of course you’d get very nervous and lack confidence going into Grand Final Day and of course the collective psyche of the club would be completely broken, It was like living in the worst version of Groundhog Day all because of the fact that you love a club or happened to play for a club that everyone else has decided they didn’t like…
It's also perhaps why Pies Supporters and Players celebrate so hard after finally winning one, maybe even to their detriment at times. These do not come by very often anymore; you never know when the next one may come or if you’ll even be around when it does. So, you might as well celebrate as hard as you can because you might not get another opportunity like this again.
There are times that I wish things were easier as a Pies supporter around opposition supporters but honestly, there’s a reason I fell in love with this club and it’s just something you either get or you don’t. You either love them like they were one of your children or you don’t and can’t stand the damn club. I bleed Black and White and that’s how it’s going to stay.
I just wanted to give some thoughts on how the Colliwobbles affected the club and how everything else led to why Collingwood and Pies Supporters are the way they are today from a Pies Supporters point of view. I wrote it out because I feel like you don’t really get to see this perspective too often and I wanted to put it out there.
Keep up the good work Gaz. I’ve been sharing these videos to other fans because of how good they are. It takes a lot to get me to do that and you honestly deserve it. Best of luck with future videos, I really need to catch up with The History of Australian Football series you’ve been doing. Sorry if this comment is way too long.
      Bryan.

If I recall, Rene (with I think Ron Wearmouth, though could be wrong because Wikipedia says Peter Daicos was in it and I might have mixed them up) cameoed in the 1980 film The Club, which (SPOILERS) ends with the team winning the Grand Final (against Fitzroy of all teams).

My Cat Uncle was kind enough to take me to both the 80 and 81 Prelim's, where both Daicos and Kink were the difference in two close games - they were a class-above anything we had. I started going to Windy Hill with HS friends and saw almost every game Kink played for Don's. Being from such a rival meant that we gave him time to prove the impressive form he was showing - all l can say is that l can't praise him highly enough. He settled quickly, and believe me, the Don's fans were ready to go after him. We couldn't understand how Collingwood had let him go - he was cut-above and always amongst our best players on the day.

Yes, we certainly asked around, and that was the consistent "knock" on him from Wood's fans - no pun. I've often pondered how far a forward line including Fabulous Phil, in a triumvirate with Daicos and Kink wooda beaten Cats by in both 80 and 81. I complain about how regimented the game is now and perhaps the *Kanga Kennedy" and " Hafey" precepts were the beginning of this. Hafey got everything out his players - going from last to second was some achievement.

I remember my dad telling me stories about Rene Kink and how he first and foremost was an absolute monster on the field. He said Rene was an incredible player but a player who had a temper and would every now and again get a little violent. I also recall my dad being really salty about the 1977 grand final saying if Phil Carman wasn't suspended for whacking Michael Tuck we probably would've won it.

    • @MLewB62

Its hard to describe how graceful and fast he was. His kick, on either side was perfect and his gather and run was freakish. Its a myth he never won a flag with the Woods. He was probably BOG in the 76 reserves triumph alongside Johnny Greening and Rat Mcormack. Im with your dad on 77. Carman was the real thing and its hard to say if he'd made a difference, but at the time all the pies supporters thought we only had to be one point better.... Go Pies.

It's a shame there's not a lot of video highlights of him, he was a remarkable player, no one else played like he did. Unfortunately the workrate and determination were lacking at times.
Definitely true about 1977, although I still think 1981 was the biggest what-if.

Rene was a very different fella. If you happened to run into him he always looked you in the eye and said gday. Unlike a lot of other players he was always up for a quick yarn. But yeah, he admits himself he would pack up early if he thought he'd done enough. By the way. @@thegaz-man I loved your series on the saints. Its a great piece of work.
