It’s nice of you too encourage people to use what ever they want to in their home. There is no rules that everyone has to be the exact same. Everyone should be comfortable in their home no matter what anyone else thinks.

Love it! Sometimes we get schooled on things, other things we take all of that knowledge and make it like we want to. Custom made/home made is always better than store-bought in my book too!

I love how everything turned out. So...I sew the way some of you use a spray painter. All my life, on machine age 5, patterns by age 10, somehow upsetting my home ec teacher knowing how to sew before I got there! Im 67 now and had started teaching sewing locally in the small town we retried to inland southern calif. Small ranching, mining, hiking, fishing community. Globally know for the tallest mountain in USA, excluding Alaska. Way different lifestyle for me. I started big city as a child and slowly moved to smaller cities. Covid came so stopped teaching. Ive made most of my clothing from thrift store clothes all my life. So recycle and upcycle is not knew for our famly. My parents Scottish immigrants so thrity or cheap was their lifestyle. I have a saying "no glue in sewing". But thats the best hem tape of that type Ive seen. I can think of some fast small holiday projects Id use it for. My mother also had many sayings. One was the sewing macine sews a straight line, you are the creator. No different than a scroll saw. Which was invented by a man watching his wife sew! For this pillow cover, called envelope style its easier than you think. I started a teaching blog in wordpress. Kept loosing data and pics so now starting over in blogspot. I only sell a few jean purses at our tiny veggie market because people here kept asking where can i get one. I can explain most sewing much more simply than most instructions online. I make my own pillow forms but do buy cheap pillows for the poly stuffing. Cheaper! I wanted square for my sofa so I cut my pillows square. Just measured the height, marked same on side, made a few marks and chopped right through it. I put a bit more poly in them and zig zagged closed but you could use the hem tape by inserting between the ends of the two pieces. Same for pillow. If you really dont sew. Put the hem tape inside both sides of fabric when right sides together at the point you want the outside measuerement or at the line you would sew it. To note. I always make a covered pillow form. I also make envelope style or add a zipper to be able to wash pillow covers. I save dress linings or slip like material. I happened to have 2 king size micro fiber pillow covers I used when making a foam bench seat cover. You dont want super slippery but its easier to put an all cotton cover back onto a smoother fabric especially over a foam form. To know the measurement. Measure your pillow. Add seam allowance you will be sewing. I sew at 1/2". Cut one your pillow size plus 1/2" all around. So you want the back pieces to overlap. Lets say your first cover is 18" wide by whatever height you measured. Cut same height but cut width using width calculations of 18" so half that for each piece. You want the flap overs to be 6" each plus 1/2" hems at the slit, sewn by folding twice at 1/4". So for width cut the pieces half your width 9" + 6" + 1/2" hem. Hem both halves first. Lay both on top of the back piece. Pin all around and at the ends of the flap over edges. Sew all around and clip corners, turn and done! Note for adding a zipper. Do that seam first. I have since a pattern told me sewn all zippers by back tacking at mark at end of zipper opening (the zipper head and metal tack bar) change to the longest stitch where zipper will be between back tack.Center zipper face down. Pin crosswise. Top stitch from front. Hand stitch by turning the wheel over pins or reach under and remove as you sew. Use seam ripper to open stitching where zipper is. You will always have a perfect zipper when closed even if not perfectly centered.

replying to myself here. If you want to make a sham looking pillow cover just add the extra called a flange to your width and height measrements, lets say 1-1/2 for a flange. Sew like envelope pillow cover, turn and then top stich at 1-1/2" and youve got a pillow sham.

Great idea to use pillows on the sofa. I also restuff cushions that go 'flat'. Envelope covers are a quick, easy way to refresh decor ❤

Your projects turned out great! Most sewing projects are just straight stitching. I would recommend pressing your pillow covers before turning right side out and then pressing again on the right side. This sets your seam nice and sharp.

I like the valences. I have never used fuse tape before, so it was nice to see it is not difficult to work with. My favorite was the pillowcases. I think using a standard pillow was a wonderful idea. And I do love ticking striped fabric. Great video.

Love the ideas!! I use unbleached muslin - tea/ coffee stain it. Bake it to set the stain & iron. I don’t cut - I rip & leave the raw edge. I use the curtain rings with the clamps & slide them on. Easy peasy. Very country / farmhouse/ rustic.
I would like to do the feed sacks in my kitchen. It’s tiny but needs something. You may have the solution. Thanks! I certainly enjoy your channel!

The curtains turned out beautifully! I love the pillows and why I haven't made any.......ahhhh! I will be on the hunt for material I love now. I don't mind sewing, just have to make the time. You've inspired me yet again! Oh yeah, look on the side of your sewing machine, there is a little thing there sticking out, that's a blade for cutting your thread! I use mine all the time!

  • @valentinat3250
    @valentinat3250 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

Loved the curtains! Even simpler, I have begun to make scarf style curtains-I cut a square or shaped piece of fabric ( you could sew or fuse tape the edges). Then I hang the fabric evenly over the curtain rod. No threading thru the curtain rod. Very easy to take down to wash or change. You could also place fabric at an angle ( so it looks like a triangle) or layer more than one on the rod for an interesting look. As for pillows, I have had good luck thrifting throw pillows. I use the form ( we like down), wash and dry it, and it comes out like new and is super economical.

Way to reuse those thrift store finds! I'm sure that I've walked by things I would have NEVER thought about buying & repurposing.
I have, however bought thrift store or garage sale items & fixed them up. Ie: We bought an ugly old desk w/3 drawers on one side with 1drawer missing. My aunt & I turned it into a changing table. We padded the top in sailcloth after stripping & repainting it. We left the open space where the drawer should have been alone & made it the "diaper storage area" so my cousin could grab a clean diaper quick!

I really like the curtains & they do brighten up your kitchen.
Couch cushions & throw pillows never seem to be the right texture or fluffiness. The regular bed pillow is a great idea because you can actually get cozy with it. When we watch movies together we all haul in our pillows & blankets so, why not!
I love your videos, thanks again for the great content! 👍

Hi Yvonne ~ it is nice to focus on our homes and do some of those “things” we have been wanting to update or makeover … and working outside the home prevented us from doing for lack of time ! You certainly are a busy woman…not sure we can label you “retired” with all your refinishing and crafts you create… LOL!!
This makes me want to get my machine out again and start sewing! Oh the pillows I have made over the years for my Etsy Shop… but loved it and LOVE ALL THE GORGEOUS FABRICS ! Nice job on all ! How nice that fabric is you used for your valances ! I have never used the tape before ! That is nice and nice testament on how it last! I remember those uniforms, Colorguard dresses, etc! Oh my! I do miss those day though 😕
Hope you have a wonderful Mother’s Day !!!

Love the new curtains, the white looks great with your cupboards. I do the same thing for pillows. We like big puffy pillows on our great big sectional so I make envelope covers for bed pillows. They are easy to wash, take off and put on. We should all be comfortable in our homes. I like the ticking, it's a classic fabric.

I am willing to bet these are all old grain sacks sowed together for a backing for a quilt. The reason I say this is because I tore up an old tatterd quilt and the backing was old grain sacks. This piece became a shower curtain. I love the curtains ❤❤❤ for my sofa pillows I use feather pillows in old grain sacks. Do whatever you like. Love your tutorials

Good job Yvonne! As always! LOVE !!! Soo adorable fits perfectly for your kitchen! I just made a window curtain for a window in my kitchen, I thrifted a vintage lace table cloth and it has some yellow color in the fabric and I made a curtain for the spring/ summer like you! I love it too! But I didn’t do what you did which is the right way, I cut it and hot glued it on a a spindle as my rod, looks so cute!

Hi Yvonne, loved both the valances and the pillows. I just got some ticking stripes to recover a small stool and hope I have enough to make a pillow cover lemur over. Ticking stripes fabric is pretty pricey jere in Florida so I will most definitely start looking at thrift stores now for it. Thanks for all you do🤗

Try boiling it in hot water and a bit of detergent. Works on old linens.

I enjoyed this segment very much. Thanks, I love the idea of bed pillows on the couch, which makes the couch more comfortable. I haven't sewed anything in a long time. my bobbin is even empty.

Great video. I'm thinking maybe the 'no-sew-tape' method might work for me. I used to sew really a lot, many years ago, until my powerful computer sewing machine did a hit & run, right over & through my finger. I've stuck to hand sewing since then, LOL. {It sure would help if you could do a video about simple no-sew casual cotton sleeveless jumper-dresses, IF that would even work?}.

oh no! I only have vintage machines because easy to maintain and repair. I now have 11. LOL! I never hand sew except for fine things I will do whats called a rolled french hem. Which is great on voiles but would be a way to hem an armhole avoiding bias tape. And works well for hems too again if curved hem or finicky materials. Its sewing into a tube then you pull it and it rolls. There are videos on youtube but if you want i can find the lady showint the best instructions.
