I have been banging this drum for a long time. Be careful who you take advice from. Your mental model is a really thoughtful way to approach it.

Going to say, this is probably the best kind of video considering all of the videos out there that tell you what to do from the perspective of someone else's experiences of how to be a software engineer or something ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Those videos sound fine on the surface, but they don't understand every person's (obviously) viewpoint and knowledge base

Is autobiographical advice actually bad? I find it useful to hear people's paths to success, even if that path is no longer applicable (due to changes in tech, the market, or whatever). In particular, the variety of paths to success gives me ideas about how I can carve my own path. To me, autobiographical advice combines with "good advice" (the rational mental model you describe) to create actionable ideas.

Steps to becoming a better software engineer:
Step 1: Find a software engineer better than you.
Step 2: Kill the software engineer.
Step 3: Eat their flesh, absorb their skills.
Step 4: Quickly find another software engineer as to not waste the killing momentum.
    ...

Please, take note, that your advice may fit "professional" companies like Amazon (even if we leave aside the shady things Amazon did), but may not fit company that do not play fair with their employees. But you yourself actually mentioned it, by filtering advices.
For instance, you told that to become senior one needs to be a leader, have vision about goals. And it is how things should be. But in some companies to become senior one just needs to constantly brag, kiss managers shoes and walk over others.
So your advice may apply to Amazon-like companies, but not to others. And it's not always possible to get into Amazon-like company.

Interesting take. Note that the world is not just and there is no script in achieving anything and as you pointed out will be unique to each environment and paradigm. Like anything it is the meaning that you extract out of the abstraction or the key message. For example Meta’s advice I extracted is how to be effective and avoid the traps of always chasing the new shiny object or as Peter Druker stated “Nothing is less productive than to make more efficient what should not be done at all.” Knowing that the time is finite and scare resource is key as well. Therefore, depending on your goal or objective you must be strategic with your approach and alignment to your comp mission is a good sound advice. Kiss assing you may believe is a wrong tactic, however, being agreeable and knowing how to diffuse friction and cultivate positive environment can move your vision quicker. So like meta Advice, observe closely on their daily tactic and once you see it.. it’s difficult to unsee things. Know that we are all in our own journey and these folks in power are still cultivating there own sets of skills. What you observed are folks stumbling and troubleshooting what works for them at the given time and objective. Cheers

@@bboystiff06 thanks for the feedback. Did I correctly understand your point as "Observe what they do, not what they say and adapt"?

    • @bboystiff06

@@uknow2908 exactly, the hardest part is many of our interactions are improvasation and dynamic. Conversation becomes difficult to dissect its meaning and intent; I am not entirely convince all interaction are intentional and productive in a face to face setting. Knowning that, we need to do our best to really filter the noise, and understand the other person's angle. If nothing else, learn what not to do, discard everything else; protect your mental space. Lastly, a zen proverb "Empty your cup". When your cup is full, there is no room to absorve and learn new things. Water will overflow "content goes in one ear, out in another". All that said, you watching and replying to comments such as this is a positive sign that you are going after it, being intentional, and really dissecting or chewing the content. I think this is key, knowing this I believe you can break through whatever obstacle ahead of you. Good luck my friend.

One last thing I wanted to zoom into, you mention bragging. To some it may appear to be as you stated but most upper management do not know all the ins and outs. Sometimes you must promote yourself or highlight key achievements. There is also nothing wrong with taking pride of the awesome work we produce. Bragging to others, stellar stand out to the next. Not all have similar context as you do, we need to help our boss regonize our achievement. Of course there is an elegant way to execute this.

    • @uknow2908
      @uknow2908 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@bboystiff06 thing about bragging / promoting oneself and it's ethical side depends on the situation. The point is, since managers are lazy and/or exhausted - the one who was heard the most, not who did the most will be promoted in many companies. Once again, it's how things are, not how they should be.

I have a question. If it's so hard to get good talent and so hard to keep them and the cost of training and integration is also very high, then why does Amazon treat it's workers so badly and how are they still thriving if people get in and leave within a few years. Also, how come you're able to withstand the work pressure there for all these years and still manage this channel, your kid and anything else you got going on?
