- In this video you’ll learn how to handle ii-V progressions.. But instead of complex modes and arpeggios, we'll focus on just two notes that are key to the resolution. Then we’ll look at ways to make it work. We'll also look at two simple patterns that make playing the resolution easy.
Finally we’ll look at how to navigate all of the ii-Vs Duke Ellington used in his classic tune "Satin Doll."

THANK you for being honest 🙏 you are GODSEND to me in my journey in something so complex but with you on my side in my life path I will achieve and accomplish.
This is great, straight into it. Liked and subbed. Cheers !
Thanks so much and welcome
Thank u for sharing this great lesson. Very helpful
My pleasure. Thanks for watching
thanks George , I am back at jazz guitar at 64 ( needless to say I 'm running vs the hourglass ;) your thorough insight is exactly what I need to catch up... have a great day.
Chris ( SW France)
Welcome back!. The three most important things for us seniors is consistent practice, developing the hand to ear connection and keeping it simple. It doesn’t require hours a day, but every day. Sing everything and don’t get bogged down with theory
Amazing lesson, professor. I'll need to watch this video again and check out those other videos as well.
I'm glad it helped. Thanks for watching!
Great lesson 👍
Thank you Kotaro-san
Amazing video! Thanks!
Thanks!
Good lesson. Nice axe!
Thanks!
Great approach. Love your tone on this video.
Thanks for listening
Hi Professor, can you do Pat martino Concept?
I'm working on some of Pat's concepts now.
great lines and explaination
I love it
Greaaat ! Thank you very much
You are welcome!
They used to say drinking from a fire hose in the south...so many concepts to understand in this video. We dont need the fifths? Octave displacement? I will save to watch later Professor. Nice playing!
Good questions. Octave displacement is jargon for moving a note or notes in line by an octave. In the video, it's a descending scale and the last three note are played an octave higher. As to leaving out the 5ths in chords, check out this video. th-cam.com/video/5qdhzbdZq40/w-d-xo.html
excellent lesson, do you have any song recommendations when learning chord Melody? I'm only working on Autumn leaves now and would like more.. Thanks
Yes, that will be something I cover a little later as it's more advanced. First steps are to learn the tune inside out.
thank you sir. but I don't know notes. where is fretboard?
Your guitar has a beautiful tone. I know that part of it is you, but what guitar are you playing. It looks like a D'Angelica?
It's a Peerless Gigmaster Jazz, 175 style. I add a little plate reverb to it
Another great video, thanks.
Thanks so much.
I use lixamidian mode for everything 😎
Personally, I prefer the demented scale
Good stuff. One critical observation: Your voice is a little boomy. My hearing has declined a little, and I don't hear highs as well as I once did. If you were in closer on a good mic the sibilants would make it through to my old ears and your wise words would register better. That aside, your video gets a like from me. Stay after it, man.
Getting closer to a cardioid mic would have even more bottom due the proximity effect. I use a de-esser to reduce sibilance, but I’ll look into using a bit of high shelf. I don’t hear much in that range anymore so it’s hard for me to know what effect it has
This is really good & interesting, but i don't know that I'd call it simple.
Compared to approaches that require chord scales or arpeggios for each chord, two notes is simpler. It’s not necessarily easy and it’s not what I teach beginner jazz guitarists
what a hell are you talking about??😂😂
subtitles please !!!!!.
You call that simple?
Do you have a question?
Is there anything simpler for people who didn't go to Berkeley?@@GeorgeHessMusic
Not for beginners, 😅
