Unlock Jazz Guitar: 5 Super-Versatile Chord Voicings Anyone Can Play
This video introduces five versatile jazz guitar chord voicings, inspired by Joe Pass. Each voicing can function as four or five different chords depending on the bottom note. Adding just one note to these basic shapes doubles their chord possibilities. The video also shows how to identify the different chords and use them in basic progressions.
These simple variations allow for chord melodies. Sample progressions demonstrate how to use the voicings. You’ll learn to use a small number of shapes for a wide variety of jazz sounds.
After watching this video, you will be able to:
----Play five multi-use jazz chord shapes.
----Identify different chords from the same shape.
----Use these chords for basic solos and progressions

Little secrets of great masters, thank you.
In these straitened times this is the answer to a harmonically challenged guitarist’s woes. - Kidding aside, I thought I had a handle on multi function chord voicings but you just threw down some doozies 🤩 Thank you muchly 🙏….. and it’s good to see you back!
Thanks. They really open things up when you realize every voicing you learn has multiple name.
Can you explain more example of V7/iii, V7/Vi ?
What is the V7 chord of iii and Vi?
The V7 of iii is a dominant 7th chord built on the seventh scale degree and the V7 of vi is built on the third. These secondary dominants have one note that does not belong to the current key, the 3rd of the chord. For practical purposes, that’s really all you need when improvising and if you choose to think of them as VII7 or III7 you’ll be fine

thanks George , I am back at jazz guitar at 64 ( needless to say I 'm running vs the hourglass ;) your thorough insight is exactly what I need to catch up... have a great day. Chris ( SW France)
Welcome back!. The three most important things for us seniors is consistent practice, developing the hand to ear connection and keeping it simple. It doesn’t require hours a day, but every day. Sing everything and don’t get bogged down with theory
Sounds like you are talking about me.... 😉
Hi George. I am a bass player of quite a few years. A couple of years ago I bought an Ibanez semi hollow jazz guitar and started out learning to play guitar. i have always loved playing jazz with the bass but wow! it is huge step up to playing jazz on guitar. I can play a bit, perhaps enough to keep going, but only just. Then I noticed your web site which stood out from all of the others for many reasons. The only thing is I am not sure if I would fit the prerequisite for the program other than my age. What do you think?
Sign up for a free lesson and let’s find out. Since you know the music, it’s probably doable
There are many great teachers teaching their craft on YT. We're lucky guitarists like me can access material such as this that helps us develop and progress our playing. ✌️
Glad I can help.
Agree. Seeing you sir, I see Joe Pass alive again 😊
I think you must be referring to our hairstyles :-)
Great lesson 👍
Thanks, Kotaro-san!
Great advice George-learning by ear takes more time than using the dots , which so often I encounter when playing in a Big Band. Doing your own arrangement from the bottom up really is very satisfying. Very encouraging teaching style too- obviously a lot of experience here. Thank you.
Thanks for the kind words.Learning by ear does take longer at first, but it rapidly improves. Now, I learn songs in the afternoon and play them that night at a gig. All by ear. But the kicker is, it makes you a better player.
Your enthusiasm is quite contagious! Thank you for your cheerful and light approach to teaching this beautiful music, I think it will help a lot of people (just like it's helping me)
Thanks so much.
This video is too much talking than practice to teach...😂
What do u think about learning Charlie Christian solos? I feel it can be great for learning arpeggios but I have a tough time hearing the guitar chords on the Benny Goodman records. Any thoughts?
It worked pretty well for Wes and Tal Farlow, so it's hard to argue. I learned some of Charlie's licks, too. The harmony on the Goodman tracks is older swing style. Pretty basic but includes diminished chords in a different way. You might have better luck with the tracks that were recorded at Minton's. They're mostly standards.
Thank you ❤
55 anni e adoro sentire e suonare standard jazz🎸🙌
Thanks you. I'm way past 50 but trying to get to grips with basic jazz guitar. This is very helpful and what I like. mot is that s you've got us playing something that sounds like jazz right off the bat.
Exactly. At our age, we do this for fun.
Ed Bickerts comping on Pure Desmond is an absolute masterclass in comping. He played a tele on the session and you’d swear the accompaniment was a Fender Rhodes! I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention Lorne Lofsky as Ed was a huge influence and colleague that recorded with Ed on an ibanez Roadster Strat.
Great player.
Thanks -brings a lot of things together. What was the name of the 4th rhythm pattern at 7.40 ? -I'm sure it's not 'Woodster'. Any enlightenment?
I call it Woodside, from Count Basie’s Jumping at the Woodside
@@GeorgeHessMusic Thank-you Sir. All the best from New Zealand
That’s a GigMaster by Peerless.. if I’m. Not wrong:) sounds good!
Yes, correct. It’s my workhorse
Transcribing small phrases in solos is a great exercise for ear training and learning the language
Yes, I use the same method for that, LMS. Melodies are easier, so I start there.
I started transcribing Chet Baker solos to learn if he has tendencies when soloing. I had a jazz guitar instructor tell me transcribing is like taking a private lesson with the artist. George Benson solos taught me how to use chromaticisms effectively along with arpeggio pivots. Wes taught me how to string chord shapes in a manner more effective than drop chord inversions. Initially the ear training is tough but anyone can do it. If you can sing it, you can play it!
@@Guit7Jazz That makes sense. You can also learn a lot by how they play the melody. I think the melody tends to get overlooked in favor of soloing
Scofield said the best way to learn jazz was to learn and play tunes. He should know.
Can’t argue with the greats
That's what I'm doing and i learnt many tunes though "You Tube"and you learn from different teachers! What i learnt in two years would have taken me 25years when You Tube was not there!
Wow, the absolute essence condensed into 11 minutes!
Thanks man 🤙🏼 , 66 yr old long time beginner here . I need to watch this a few times . A simple approach to something that at first seems overwhelming.
It can be a complex as you want, but not when you’re starting out.
Great advice and immediately applicable to a practice routine. Thanks

Scott Henderson.said"it's all in your records"😊
Great player. Saw him in Singapore a few years ago
I say learn it all...Learn Phrases.. intervals . Cells appeggios, feel, licks are ok, but listening is key..
I agree. Jazz is a lifetime pursuit. But as we get older we need to choose the right things at the right time.
I have a question regarding the small chords/shapes you’re mentioning at 07.07: what does P4, TT and P5 mean? Thank you dr. Hess! 🎸🙏
P4: perfect forth - TT: tritone (key interval in e.g. V7 btw 3rd and 7th) - P5: perfect 5th - hth
Intervals. Perfect 4th, Tritone and Perfect 5th. Thanks for asking
@@GeorgeHessMusic thanks so much!
Whoa. Definitely bookmarking. You are speaking a familiar language, but the common connection to the T SD sd- T D T, I will need to explore that further! Good stuff. Thanks! Cheers, Daniel 🤙🏻
It blew me away when I realized how many songs use that framework
Great advice
Thanks.
Tengo 65 y me siento más joven que antes ( tocó desde chico y a mi edad con más sutileza y corazón ( y improvisacion surge más fluida! El único problema Levantar mi amolifier Fender tubos😂

10 precious minutes! Thank you George!

Really useful, thanks for sharing
Exactly! Learning tunes gives me the tones from the melody that call out Key and Scale, and it makes me work. It also makes me stone cold aware what brilliant composers made these Standards.
Just saw a clip by Branford talking about Blakey chewing him out for changing a Gershwin tune too much. “Gershwin don’t need you to make him hip”
