I worked at a Gibson dealer back in the mid to late 1990s and remember when these came out. These came out to compete with both PRS and Hamer USA guitars. At that time Hamer were gaining a ton of buzz with their double cut guitars. Those mid/late 90's Hamer USA guitars really gave Gibson a run for their money, but ultimately Gibson came out on top. By 1998 and on, Gibson Custom Shop really ramped up and they started upping their game ten fold. I think it was both the pressure from PRS and Hamer, but I distinctly remember Hamer being of more concern to our Gibson reps back then. PRS guitars back then were very expensive, and Hamer stuff was priced below Gibson prices. We couldn't keep Hamer stuff in stock it would sell so far, where as Gibson stuff would sit on the wall and fade pretty bad from the lights. Gibson nitro finishes back then were not as durable as they are today.

I remember my local shop kept their small stock of Gibsons in a display case that protected them from the light.

Guitars like this were pretty much for Doctors and Lawyers back in the 90s. The regular double cuts were somewhat more affordable for the rest of us 90s kids, plus they had humbuckers which were more desirable than p90s (at least from what I remember). Hamer might have been cheaper but with out the push of the guitar player in No Doubt, I don't think they would have had nearly the relevance that they did. My opinion though.

  • @dukegfsl
    @dukegfsl 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

You might want to dig down a little deeper my friend, that Gibson "snakehead" headstock is a lot older than you might know. It dates back to 1924 on mandolins and 1924 on L-3/L4 archtop guitars, about the time PRS was entering his daddy's mind as a lustful thought in grammar school, so think again. Hardly a PRS copy, in fact quite the opposite. You can find them on modern electrics as in 1981 ES-369's, a couple years before PRS guitars was established.

I think Austin should change the name of the channel to "Trogly's All Gibson Show". I get that he specializes in Gibson, but c'mon man... There are other companies doing equally good guitars without all the stupidity that Gibson is delivering! The guitar world DOES have other brands than Gibson!
Try Cort... Old Hamers... Vola... Mayones... Evil Evil... Dean B. Zelinksy... Dantzig... G&L... Saito... Crimson... Chapman... Solar... Barlow... Framus...
I love the channel and I find Austin entertaining, but the constant barrage of Gibson's is crazy!

Hey trogly! I have some info on the guitar marketing! I work at a music store and we have some vintage guitar magazines that i read through and i found the add for the guitar! They were called Les Paul DC Pro regardless of pickups and bridge. You could find in any configuration. They were in butterscotch, fade cherry, indigo, and black. Retail was between $3950 and $4195 which i assume is because of specs

This illlustrates the issue with fetishizing guitars for their colors, finishes, headstock design etc, etc, etc...it still sounds like crap...the wrap tailpiece isn't a problem for Trogly since he doesn't mind playing a guitar that's out of tune or badly intonated, but personally I loathe them

Actually.... it was Hamer Guitars that really made this "shape" popular with their "Sunburst" and later their Special. PRS came up with their "shape" by combining the lower half of a Les Paul and the upper half of a Stratocaster. That "weird" headstock should be their new standard one. Much better string angle.

My fave episode - thank you for this Austin; this axe template should be a standard offering on the Les Paul menu. I bashed Gibson before, but after perusing the official site (and the Epiphone offerings, too), I’m looking to buy some instruments. A basic iteration of this DC is offered at Custom Shop level ($5k) along with some DC mahogany slab guitars ($4k). IMHO, Gibson would find serious students buying DC slabs with p-90s at the current listed Les Paul Special Tribute ($999) sector: the bodies would be 4 pieces, with a 2 piece neck, having an EXTENDED TENON (played SGs - the lower horn is an obstacle and the neck joint has stability issues), the electronics and hardware would be identical to the current LPST fare. Some people possess the mindset that ‘only a single blank is good enough for a body and neck - I’ll settle for nothing less’. My tack is that not only would a mahogany ‘scraps’ guitar be cheaper, but it would be structurally sound and resonant as well; an average 8-12 year old child’s parents would be able to place a quality USA made instrument in their child’s hands. A Gibson consumer-for-life is born. In the 50s & 60s this guitar type was a BUDGET axe. Now, the LP Juniors and Specials sell at the $1.5k to $4k price point in the 2022 catalog. My fave student/budget model - the Melody Maker is conspicuously absent from the Gibson lineup ( I’m buying a pair of Joan Jett Epiphone Signature guitars. One will remain stock - the other will be modded with a nylon nut, oil & paper caps, ‘61 to ‘65 spec premium pots, a Switchcraft selector and jack, and a NON-ADJUSTABLE premium bridge. A String Butler will be employed, also. Vintage sound and daily driver). Two Epi LP Special guitars will be bought, also. One will remain stock; the other similarly modded with the addition of replacement Gibson P-90s. The Modern menu LP Special and Studio listings IMHO are the BEST damn things in the catalog - I’m likewise picking-up a pair of each. PRS, ESP, Heritage, and um,…. uh….. other Gibsons can’t compete. No neck binding or nibs to cause a player or maintenance tech to fret - a compound radii board and thinner neck profile would be icing, though. The only things that would make these axes BETTER, nay….. PERFECT: stock Grover locking tuners (even some Epis have ‘em), a stock TP-6 fine tuning tailpiece (the marginal price increase would yield priceless playing rewards on EVERY Gibson - surprised that these buggers weren’t mandated since the introduction decades ago), the headstock featured in this Trogly vignette (again, this design would bump-up both aesthetics and functionality a few notches on most every Gibson model), and lastly the CHAMBERED, DOUBLE CUTAWAY body. The symmetry is easy on both the eyes and the fingers. The reduced weight is felt, and the resonance heard. Again, the Gibson DCs have been around since the 50s and IMHO should have been a perennial model(s) in the Gibson/Epiphone catalog from student level slabs to the elite Les Paul Customs. If anyone has data on how Hamer, Washburn, and PRS scored a hit with the DC formula circa ‘80s, whereas Gibson didn’t, then please post. Gibson owned this genre. Decades later PRS sued the big G, after introducing basically schizophrenic Gibson clones.
p.s. Austin, please cover a wine red LP Studio and a burst LP Special in a future episode - these instruments define value at the $1.2k to $1.6k price point. Godin, ESP, and PRS simply plagiarize and flatter, but don’t deliver.

??? Trogly due, did you know when you edidiph us about the pickups on a VOM and you read off what the meter reads off 7.8 to 7.6 those are resistor readings and on the display it might read 7.8 ohms or 78 X 10 or 78 × 10 × 10 × 10 or 10 to the 3rd power and you can use the probes on meter and you can get a resistor reading with the vol controls are closed meaning turn off the volume so that the volume resistor is on it's maximum strength and most likely to read 250k or 500k ohms or killi-ohms. When you turn up volume to are releasing the signal to let it go about it's business. Honestly for Gibson's volume controls are up front (I believe) the tones in the back, should be the same as in front but with .33 micro faird that's a capacitor changing time sequence from a volume pod creating tone.

Can you confirm that Gibson done a Paul Jackson Jr signature model with the same head stock maybe?

I remember seeing these around, the top is gorgeous but I never cared for this body style or that headstock either. That transition on the back,of the guitar from the neck to the body could’ve also been done nicer too.

I had a chance to buy one of those a few years ago, at the time I didn’t have $1700. That they were asking for it…

The guy doing the demo.. It's almost like he's not human. But he is in fact playing.

The best headstock I've ever seen on LP DC! Much tastier than those usual mustaches! 🧐

There’s a black one for sale on Reverb. Unfortunately the seller is in Hong Kong. Man I want one of these
