    I don' understand, there was no appreciable damage to the cam ledge but you are still replacing the whole head? Because the cam sensor is original and 'probably' worn?

    You're in better shape than a customer car that came in for a misfire on cylinders 4,5,and 6 changed plugs, and coils checked injectors. Found broken exhaust cam between cylinders 4 and 5. Causing backfiring into the intake.

    I bought a 2009 328i xdrive, high miles, 150k+ ... there was a random misfire problem that would set the CEL off and on when I bought it. I picked up an Autophix 7019 to get a better idea of what's going on, as I'm learning about the bmws. I've put about 5k miles on it, there are codes for misfires in cyl 4 and 6 now, i changed coils, still throwing those codes, new spark plugs and all that...
    it's winter, I've been driving short distances and I hear the healthy tick .. described that way, after i took the engine cover off I've driven it a few times.. and it's snowed. should I be worried about an exhaust vanos code and sluggish servo motor code now? any idea on how that happened with the info above? I'd appreciate any info. I might of reset something through the scanner and wasn't really sure about specifics... I dunno.

    I've been seeing more and more N52 eccentric shaft levers wearing out lately. Other than the obvious oil leaking through the pins of the eccentric shaft position sensor that's what usually sets the fault. That bearing ledge you pulled didn't look bad at all.

    • @NathansBMWWorkshop
      @NathansBMWWorkshop  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      presteronetj that was the intake side I pulled off, the exhaust side is where the trouble will be, I look to find that completely scarred, but will check before ordering any parts

    • @JamesMotorsport
      @JamesMotorsport 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ahh yes. You think extended oil change intervals are to blame or just poor metallurgy on BMWs part.

    • @NathansBMWWorkshop
      @NathansBMWWorkshop  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I would say bmw's fault on this one, these early n52's were common for this

  • @Zakiruly

    There is no ledge for inlet camshaft like exhaust in n52. So if I replace only the first bearing cap would it help? Or I have to replace whole cylinder head because the rings scratches both sides? What do you think? Please help

    Nathan hi how are you? Well I just went through hell n alot of money to discover my problems stemmed from a short to my water pump plug. Well I did the best I could for a temp fix by cutting plug adding wire also soldered and used heat shrink. Anyway I didn't install my thermostat wire correctly bc I have to order pins. So it slipped out hit something and sparked. Now I have a reading of cam sensors circuit low. I think maybe it's a fuse. The car will not start. I'll fool with it tomorrow just wanted your thoughts on this bc I feel as if u do a awesome job thank you

    The camshaft ledge seals are not root cause of the infamous N52 lifter. They are separate issues. There are a lot of N52 with lifter(s) ticking from time to time because under certain driving patterns and conditions air get trapped in them and get purged only after engine fully warmed and rpms above 2K and driving like that for a few minutes. There are not that many N52's with the ledge seals warn out that get VANOS error codes due to that wear.

    • @NathansBMWWorkshop
      @NathansBMWWorkshop  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +PhaseP1 that actually could not be further from the truth, the worn ledge seals and worn cam journals are the cause of this cars lifter tick, cars with a slight tick can be fixed with holding the Rpms above 2k rpm, but if you keep reading on google that was a half ass coverup by BMW to temporarily fix the issue, also later lifters were updated so they would not trap air, watch my later videos on this, the new ledge box , cam and new exhaust lifters finally fixed the car, using 0w30 or 0w40
      Actually made the tick quiet at cold start but louder at temperature

    • @PhaseP1
      @PhaseP1 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      When and if after you replace the ledge cam and seal with the same engine head, instead of getting a new engine head, try this: on a cold engine in the morning start the car and leave it idling for 3 minutes then shut off. Then after 8 hours or so, start the engine and leave idling for a minute or so and it will most probably tick again on one of the exhaust lifter. If you replace your header with a new one, you will get a new design cast header which BMW claimed to address the lifter ticking. And they didn't disclose what exactly they changed. Even with the new header some N52's still ticked after certain drive pattern. I have my N52 car bought brand new, and with that pattern of start cold, idle for a few minutes and shut down it always ticked since 2006. Usually when I was changing cars in the driveway I was doing this, next day it was ticking until it warmed up fully and driving high rpm. And it still only ticks with that pattern today, or if I do repeated short drives, which is actually same pattern in the end. It never ticks how much ever it is cold outside or car sat outside, as long as if I don't do that short idle or short drive and shut down. I could not have my ledge cam seal seat worn out for may be 10 years without any Vanos codes ever thrown on the car with no engine performance issues. There are many like me N52 owners, ticks without any Vanos codes or any problems with the engine for years and years now. Your engine had other problem. Even N54 is suspectable for the same lege cam seal isssue, the TSB includes N54 too. But BMW never issued a TSB for N54 lifter ticking. Nor BMW ever issued a new head design for N54 just to address the complaining customers that their engine was ticking. BMW did those only for N52. It is not possible all those lifter ticking N52's are driving around with ledge cam seal seat worn out and no vanos issues and codes at all. N52 is about 12 years old now. If the ledge seal was the cause, not the head casting design, BMW would have replaced just the ledge and the seal during warranty period. Instead BMW replaced the whole engine head with the newly cast design head during warranty period if customer complained enough.

      @JD-jj6dd 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Replacement of the cylinder head has not been the BMW recommended repair for years. That was the initial fix and the casting was different. The later castings appeared to go back to the earlier design. The lifter tick was addressed with updated exhaust cam followers that added an oil hole at the tip where the lifter clipped in to help oil flow and purge any air from the lifter.

      I was curious if anyone thinks a bad ccv could cause a exhaust vanos code. 2a87
      The back story did a vc gasket and ended up making everything worse car ran fine before.
      I ended up figuring out a cap was knocked off the vc at the bottom causing maf codes. I glued them back on. Car is better but I now figure the ccv diaphragm is torn bad cause car is idling rough and oil cap is hard to remove , lots of vacuum in vc.
      So now looking at getting a new vc. I had new solenoids and cleaned all connections and check valves.

      The hole just in front of the first intake runner? That's the lifting point where you pick up the engine. Your bumper tow hook for the screws right into it.
