Like others here, I have heard many BWV 140s, and feel lucky this is isn't just audio. The pace is good, and there are moments in the opening where it achieves what feels (to me) like pulses of joy that this cantata is all about.

Christopher this Cantata is all about : Matthew chapter 25
      King James Version
1 Then shall the kingdom of heaven be likened unto ten virgins, which took their lamps, and went forth to meet the bridegroom.
2 And five of them were wise, and five were foolish.
3 They that were foolish took their lamps, and took no oil with them:
4 But the wise took oil in their vessels with their lamps.
5 While the bridegroom tarried, they all slumbered and slept.
6 And at midnight there was a cry made, Behold, the bridegroom cometh; go ye out to meet him.
7 Then all those virgins arose, and trimmed their lamps.
8 And the foolish said unto the wise, Give us of your oil; for our lamps are gone out.
9 But the wise answered, saying, Not so; lest there be not enough for us and you: but go ye rather to them that sell, and buy for yourselves.
10 And while they went to buy, the bridegroom came; and they that were ready went in with him to the marriage: and the door was shut.
11 Afterward came also the other virgins, saying, Lord, Lord, open to us.
12 But he answered and said, Verily I say unto you, I know you not.
13 Watch therefore, for ye know neither the day nor the hour wherein the Son of man cometh.

This performance by the Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra and Choir, Tom Koopman, Conductor, is quite characteristic of what Bach would have had available for integrating BWV 140 into its debut Meeting at the Thomaskirche. In the United States, my dream venue for recording this Cantata would be Adolphus Busch Hall, Harvard University, Cambridge, MA, which has a beautiful III/33 D. A. Flentrop permanently installed and can accommodate the resources of the Authentic Music Society, incl. a two-manual harpsichord, on the main floor for the purpose.

I would be so happy if God did not exist. I would never then have to give account of all the pettinesses, small betrayals, spitefulness, and other things that render most of us the plain boiled rice at Hell's banquet.
But, thank to God, Jean Louis, it is not for Bach or Nicolai or Bourgeois or Goudimel to save us, but for the Lord Jesus Christ, who became man, bore our sins in his body on the tree, and rose on third day to save us. It is in thanks to him and for the salvation he brought that Bach and these others gave praise.

Do you find the setting too formal or even intimidating? I hope you can hear the difference between a masterly interpretation like this one and, say, Celtic Woman making a mockery of "Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring".

Attention to musical line brings out the best in vocal musical articulation not only in
Phrasing but also dynamic interpretation. World Class performance by World Class group.
Oh and not to forget the driving rhythm dotted eighths with sixteenth "that you could drive a truck through " as we say in the Midwest Lutheran Choral Tradition, that even the great tenor Steven Rooster would agree.

I know of no composer... no artist of any kind... who can so effortlessly inspire great joy and tears, optimism and understanding, a kind of human redemption and, finally, hope. It doesn't matter if the God of JS Bach exists or not; his music substantiates and makes real the idea of God, and Goodness. His ability to communicate with us, centuries later and for all time, will continue to insure that the human race does not ultimately fall prey to darkness. All we need do is listen well.

His God exists and this music provides us with yet another proof for his existence.
Bach's music and what it causes within the listener cannot be explained by naturalism.

@Chess Tauren I'm a non-believer myself, but I can still appreciate the beauty and singularity of Bach's "sacred" music. If you can't look beyond the religious origins of his work, well, I feel sorry for you, my friend.

Rendering by Koopman, choir and orchestra - besides audio recording - shines us till felt tears - even to almost atheists reminds them of highest religious thoughts! Ah, Bach, profoundly marvelous, complex and inventive, highest person of all world music indeed!

What is the human race? Do you think that In Music we have the most refined expression of that very thing? Or are words or visual image equal to it? I guess that the receiver defines their own best path to God...? I guess that the subscriber to this page would, like me, find Music to be the best medium for them. And, I would add that if it is Bach, then, you are blessed!!

In fact this is a funeral cantata.
We must be prepared for the inevitable death that might descend upon us any moment.
How to be prepared for the death?
By all our life. Our life therefore must be without blemish. It is quite impossible assignment, but, if fallen not beyond the possibility if correction, we have the door wide open for our deep and sincere repentance in God - with the only condition: it must be done while we still exist in body in this world. Therefore, our life is in fact nothing else than singular and constant, uninterrupted preparation for the departure from this world - we came to - to the world we came from; in fact - a return to our original idea. And if we have been thoroughly prepared - then, and only then:
    Wir folgen all
    Zum FreudenSaal
    Und halten mit das Abendmal
Abendmal - Last Supper; halten mit - to partake the Last Supper with God himself.
But Bach had already led us into FreudenSaal and with him in God's presence we break the bread and drink the wine in Paradise.
