I love that Uncharted starts with real people and events that make the foundation for their fiction. And even their fiction is based on folklore of the time. Really helps to ground the story!

@Ged Woulfe Not only is that not even remotely true, but Edward Teach's name is split between Blackbeard and Whitebeard. Whitebeard's name is Edward Newgate (Using the historical Blackbeard's given name) and Blackbeard's is Marshal Teach (Using the historical Blackbeard's surname).
@Ged Woulfe uhh… Bellamy is based on Sam Bellamy, Charlotte Linlin on Charlotte badger, jewlery bonny on Anne bonny, laffite on jean laffite, eustass captain kid on William captain Kidd, X drake on sir Francis drake and the list just goes on and on and on. Pretty much every crew ends up having a pirate based on real world origins besides the straw hats.
He probably went to Tahiti, cause his crew has got faith.

I mean yeah, but it wasn’t just from Uncharted. Avery founded a pirate city. In real life.
What a true pirate. He pulled off that one raid that made him wealthy and then purposefully vanished to enjoy his fortune without scrutiny. It's telling that the only information about his post raid life is anecdotal, muddled and contradictory. Other pirates sure didn't take his lesson seriously.
Because Henry had an end goal in mind, other pirates just have the next chance of plunder in mind.
Yep, you have made your fortune, now just keep your mouth shut and fly under the radar till your death, the longer you are incognito, the safer you are.
@@JoeBarron1027 Yeah, he never forgot why he became a pirate, other pirates lost themselves in the pursuit and kept doing for the sake of doing it until they were sent to the gallows.
Henry Every isn't the only pirate who got away with piracy and enjoyed his plunder, there was a Scottish Pirate named Ruari the Turbulent also known as the last of the Vikings who decorated his castle with the loot that he stolen from English merchant ship's, French and Spanish treasure ship's etc. No nationality was safe from him and the MacNeil of Barra clan even after he was pardoned from king James the 6th of Scotland he still committed piracy till the day he peacefully died at old age. Back in those days there was poor agricultural in the Scottish islands which led to the MacNeils of Barra to commit piracy for a income.

What a crazy life to live. Can you imagine the things this man has seen and done. It's unimaginable lol. Crazy how people like Henry Avery didn't even know that far into the future he would be considered one of the greatest pirates in history.
Indeed Henry Avery was undoubtedly the king of pirates but the character who inspires Gol D Roger is a French pirate: Olivier Levasseur who had amassed 4.5 billion euros. Before his hanging in public place he threw a cryptograme in the crowd shouting: "My treasure will be with whoever takes it". And since no one has ever found it ...

Henry Avery seems to parallel Luffy more than Rogers. Came from a prominent family, started sea travelling when he was young, a grand alliance vs a big superpower (Straw Hat Grand Fleet) and finding the greatest treasure ever.
We know very litle about Roger even now .. we know he's the pirate kind (was) but we still don't know where he came from and his backgrounds.

What about an episode of the greatest pirate in all of history; the pirate queen Madame Ching.
She literally had her own pirate army, held China hostage, and got away with all of it.

TSCTH there was a Chinese queen of some sort that did that but I can never remember which one.
She wasn’t really a pirate, not in the traditional sense. More like a local warlord.

This is an amazing tale and I am surprised that I've never heard it before. It makes me realize that I have a western hemisphere and North American bias to my pirate knowledge. Aside from Captain Kidd who's tale is like a mirror of this story gone terribly wrong, I was not aware of many Indian Ocean pirates. Good news, I have a lot of fun reading to do.

Herbert Gearing well it’s not exactly a history lesson but it certainly opens the door to deeper research. That’s one of the reasons I love video games
Check out the pirate queen Ching Shih! One of the most successful pirates ever maybe because she commanded an ENORMOUS fleet of tens of thousands of pirates and like Every, she got away with it!

In terms of his cultural afterlife, Henry Avery not only showed up in Doctor Who during the Matt Smith era, but helped to inspire the funniest book ever written, namely George MacDonald Fraser's 'The Pyrates' - not bad going, yes?
Whovians know what happened to Avery: he ended up in space with his crew in The Curse of the Black Spot (11th Doctor/Matt Smith era)

A lot of the pirate of Onepi are based on real life figures. While Gol D Rodger origins are debated one suggestion is it was based on Henry Every. Very much like Every, Gol Rodger was never captured. But instead turned himself in while his hoard of treasure still remained hidden.

Interesting video. I've heard that Henry Every (Avery) had kidnapped a Mughal princess (daughter of Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb) and held her for ransom. There's a striking early 20th century painting of this by John Ward Dunsmore.
I always liked the story about Henry Avery. One big score, that would set you for life and if the story is to be believed, he succeeded in that. As thus, escaped the noose and becomed legend.

Just one little thing though, the music on this video was a little louder than usual, which made it more challenging to focus on the content. I would suggest to tone the music down, maybe a lower volume or just slower tunes might work better!

I got interested in his treasure after playing Uncharted 4. Now im learning his history. I thought Libertalia is made up by Naughty Dog. It isn't, now i seek Avery's treasure. If i ever grow up.

@@risen1710 Historical fact has a basis in myth and legends. There could be a hidden pirate utopia somewhere. Remember, the Earth isn't 100% explored by man. Only by satellite. There's a reason why lost temples are still being found today.
@@rogue_sebass8770His 400 million dollar worth treasure is almost certainly real, we just don't know it's location. However it's impossible that Libertalia exists the way it's shown in Uncharted 4 since people would've found it already.

Plus his life was really interesting including how he got his nickname by leading Black troops alongside Teddy Roosevelt’s Rough Riders during the Spanish-American War. You could also talk about when he lead an army into Mexico to try and hunt down Pancho Villa, and how he was a mentor to many US WWII Commanders such as Eisenhower, Bradley, Patton, George Marshall, Leslie McNair, and Douglas McArthur

Do one on the most successful pirate in history, a Chinese female pirate who commanded over 1,800 ships and 80,000+ men - Ching Shih. The Red Flag Fleet under her rule went undefeated, despite multiple attempts by the Portuguese navy, the Chinese government, and the East India Company to vanquish it. She retired by making a deal with the government, lived to enjoy her riches, and died at an old age.
Damn that's impressive. This is the first time I ever heard of her.

@@samfong4658 I'm not too surprised. Ching Shih simply falls outside of Western Culture. Most US citizens are taught a Eurocentric and romanticized history of piracy that only took place in the Caribbean during the early 18th century.

Love all your channels Simon, and all the people that work with you of course. Just wanted to suggest a biography. Shaka Zulu has a great story I think, I've heard more then once that his style of fighting revolutionized tribal warfare at the time. I remember a story about an assault on a strong point on a rocky out crop. Shaka and his warriors, allegedly lol, climbed the cliff in silence to reach the camp by surprise. Even remaining silent if they fell to their deaths in order to remain hidden.
Just a suggestion, Id love to know the truth behind the stories. You guys are great at that. Thanks for all your work, I'm in Australia but Prague has always been a place I wanted to visit. For me its the fact it was one of the few cities not bombed to oblivion in WW2 so the architecture is still, mostly, original.
