Tbf it took me a very long time of letting BG1 sit in my game list to finally get into it. Much harder to get into crpg's like that today then it would have been for people growing up with it. Avadon the Black Fortress is a less complicate game that I think is fun and easier to get into. The writing is pretty good and the setting is fun. Jeff Vogel (Spiderweb) made better games, Geneforge is excellent, and the old Exile games were a hoot. Avadon from what I've heard was just okay. Baldur's Gate 1 though, it was always AAA slop, putting graphics first, turning the RPG genre into a walking sim across large empty maps. The engine was originally made for an RTS they half-heartedly cobbled into an RPG, BG2 introduced both romance cringe and the first pre-order DLC. It's hard to get into because it is aged graphics and presentation first kind of deal that always age like milk, instead of a really robust RPG like the Wizardry games or something like Grimoire or Wizards & Warriors, which are still hard for normies to get into but actually deliver on something worthwhile you couldn't get in a modern game.

That being the case, we'll see an incremental move towards a more coherent and higher fidelity visual design over the next 2-4 years. Keep in mind, unlike Dota 2, Deadlock was built on the bones of a different game with a wildly different setting and visual theme. Bebop and Yamato are pretty good examples of holdovers from the original project.

Tbf it took me a very long time of letting BG1 sit in my game list to finally get into it. Much harder to get into crpg's like that today then it would have been for people growing up with it. Avadon the Black Fortress is a less complicate game that I think is fun and easier to get into.
The writing is pretty good and the setting is fun. Everywhere you go people are scared shittless of you because the government body u represent has authority to kill indiscriminately if they find anyone threatens the stability of the nations that are under your supervision.
Jeff Vogel (Spiderweb) made better games, Geneforge is excellent, and the old Exile games were a hoot. Avadon from what I've heard was just okay.
Baldur's Gate 1 though, it was always AAA slop, putting graphics first, turning the RPG genre into a walking sim across large empty maps. The engine was originally made for an RTS they half-heartedly cobbled into an RPG, BG2 introduced both romance cringe and the first pre-order DLC. It's hard to get into because it is aged graphics and presentation first kind of deal that always age like milk, instead of a really robust RPG like the Wizardry games or something like Grimoire or Wizards & Warriors, which are still hard for normies to get into but actually deliver on something worthwhile you couldn't get in a modern game.

Deadlock is trash and got inorganically boosted by the fact that Valve was handing beta invitation to everyone. Basically getting advertised on the biggest gaming store front. The game is bleeding 10k players per week. I been checking the player charts every week. Most people who in my big friend list. Only played it for 20-50m (one match) and never touched it again. I got only two guys who have +10h in it. Also Concord beta or whatever it called was free and only around 2k player peak.

Wtf? Deadlock is good. It probably has more balance issues at "pro level" but VERY good and I'd call it unique, much better than super monday night combat. However someone has pointed out deadlock is basically the division's pvp mode just with more moba. And tf2ish art style.

Deadlock is shaping up to be one of the best designed games of the year, with some of the tightest controls to boot - and it's only in an effective bloody alpha state. When management at Valve actually expends the time and energy to wrangle their employees and keep them on a single project for more than five minutes, they can still produce some of the best stuff in industry.
If only it looked good. I swear they threw TF2 and Dota 2 into a blender and the sludge that came out is what they used to paint the game with. I'm not talking graphics, I'm talking art style, what a hideous looking game.

Keep in mind, unlike Dota 2, Deadlock was built on the bones of a different game with a wildly different setting and visual theme. Bebop and Yamato are pretty good examples of holdovers from the original project.
