    Question: Are you guys ever going to do a full review of the Sony a9? Or is that now old news? Jordan does mention following up with it in this video, and you have already done a piece on the recent Nikon D850. Or are you waiting for a new Sony announcement?

    Bwwwwwwhahahahaha... well said about Chris there, Jordan! ;) (j/k)
    ON A SERIOUS NOTE: you've absolutely nailed it in regard to Sony not including 'picture profiles' with this camera... very poor decision from Sony in light of the profiles being on my RX10III, RX100IV, and A7RII.

      Did Sony purposely choose to a photo shoot at an ice rink, so that their cameras didn't overheat?
      Enquiring minds want to know.

    • @StreetsOfVancouverChannel
      @StreetsOfVancouverChannel 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      My a7RII hasn't overheated since the first firmware update came out about three months after the camera was released (late summer of 2015)... none of my RX10's (I/II/III) have ever overheated... nor has my A7S over-heated since the fall of 2015.

    • @sjs2657g
      @sjs2657g 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Streets of Vancouver - I hope you don't take the following as an argument on what you have stated, but these are just my thoughts.
      "My a7RII hasn't overheated since the first firmware update came out". It is my understanding that the firmware update didn't make the camera run any cooler, it just raised the thermal threshold limit of the warning indicator and the subsequent camera shut down.
      By your nom de plume, that you probably live in Vancouver. If you lived in Atlanta or Dallas, you might not be so lucky about your cameras' overheating non-issue.
      I wish you luck. Two things have kept me from jumping onto the Sony bandwagon. The overheating issue [I have 2 Sony APS-C cameras which both overheat constantly above 87 degrees], and the lack of superior glass [I am happy to see better lenses by Sony {albeit expensive ones}, but why do they need to impede third-party lens manufacturers?].

  • @DarrenMiles
    @DarrenMiles 7 ปีที่แล้ว +16

    You guys do a consistently great job and your insights are always greatly appreciated ! I'm surprised that Sony would handicap a $4500 camera like this, but It's also nice to see sony addressing some of those core issues that really grated on the nerves of a lot of professionals - dual card slots, battery life, etc. Though at that price point, I think I might pass.

    • @jaredbaker711
      @jaredbaker711 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Handicap??? It's $2,000-$2,500 cheaper than it's closest competitor and gives so much more than they do. This isn't the a7riii. Sony already makes the best video/mirrorless camera in the a7Sii. They sensors are so different as are the focus of the camera. Anyone (professional) who shoots stills doesn't go back and forth between the same camera for quick stills then back to video, then back to stills. They have a video setup the take stills.

    • @KenTheoriaApophasis
      @KenTheoriaApophasis 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Also the A9 takes UP TO 3 MINS to clear the buffer...... 10,000% NOT an "action" camera

    • @calvinc2727
      @calvinc2727 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well the buffer is huge (241 raw/362 jpeg) so unless you're always holding down the shutter button and won't shoot till its 100% cleared you should be fine. Not being able to access the menu and etc while it offloads all those pictures is still pretty annoying though

    • @MS-gn4gl
      @MS-gn4gl 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      don't worry the complainers are all people with cameras that don't have buffers nor shutter speeds to match - but they'll all cry about how nothing sony does is good enough. The day will come - most likely by mid next year at the latest that sony has good enough good glass across all needs and they will still complain and scream about how nikon or canon have one specific lens that's slightly better so they'll still be saying "I'll pass"

  • @town3
    @town3 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I think you might want to spend more time with the A9 Cris, A. yes you can make the shutter button, the record button in movie mode. Also having the A9 now for about 4 months and having the A7S2,A7R2 and FS7 I find the A9 to have some of the best video IQ and color out of all of them, well maybe not the FS7 but it's up there very close and i've had no problem color grading the footage to achieve that punch your talking about, or any issues with DR on the A9. I think you should spend more time with it and you'll see it's one of a kind. Stills and video. Just my. always great watching you guys reviews, keep up the great work.

  • @RogerOThornhill
    @RogerOThornhill 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Re: S-log. Did you try the DRO setting? I have mine at DRO level 5 (on the a7r II) to lift up my shadows in video, and I think it works quite good for natural out of camera video. I havent really tried grading it properly, though. And I realise its gonna be harder to match up with anything else.

    Hi Jordan! I'm not a video expert, but i was wondering if you could briefly explain why many of the expensive pro video cameras (sony, Red, Canon etc...) are using a super 35 sensor as opposed to the full frame ones, what are the advantages of it?

    • @TheCameraStoreTV
      @TheCameraStoreTV  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Super35 was the most common recording format for motion pictures in the film days, so it's a format most cinematographers are familiar with. It also gives you the option of shallow depth of field when necessary, but gives a reasonable depth of field in wide angle shots, which is usually desirable. I find the Full frame aesthetic occasionally useful, but prefer Super35 for most shooting. That's why I love the idea A9 sensor, shoot either format with no penalty!
      Jordan @ TCSTV

  • @PiDsPagePrototypes
    @PiDsPagePrototypes 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    From that commentary, it sounds like the sensor would be perfect for a hypothetical "VG900 ii"
    No doubt the profiles will be in an upcoming A9s variant.

    At 3:35 the answer for those wandering why Chris was missing from Sony a9 presentation. Please if somebody knows. The Sony a9 shots uncompressed or lossy compressed raw files at 20fps? Also at 20 fps the bit depth of raw files is 14bit or 12bit?
    For those who don't know about Sony raw files:
    The Sony until recently was using only lossy compression for its raw files. After a firmware update of the second generation of a7 series, uncompressed raw files can be shoot if the option is selected. The lossy compressed raw files of Sony cameras are inferior than the uncompressed ones.
    Also during continuous shooting with a7 series camera the raw files are 12bit with lower dynamic range instead of 14bit.
    Just check in google for ( sony compressed raw files ) and ( sony a7 12 bit raw continuous shooting ).

    I am curious to see what they hold back in the A7 III series versus the A9 series (if there is a S and R version). We might not get things like dual card slots and the AF joystick in the A7 series requiring us to spend a lot more money for those features. I have the A7ii but have not fully committed to Sony professionally because those features were missing. We'll probably see an A9 S/R in the $5000-$6000 range.

    • @Abercon25

      Jimmy Ngo Syed Hyder A7ii: My current camera for portraits/ all you'll need in a camera honestly - Only reason I want to upgrade is so I can shoot weddings more comfortably with better AF and battery life & Dual card slots on an A7 3rd gen would be super handy, so I'm waiting until June to see what Sony do with their 3rd generation before 'selling my soul' and prob getting the A9.

    Tony looks better in this video than his own videos

    As a company, I think Sony's decision is valid. They don't want to kill the sales of a7Sii either...Canon doesn't have C-log on their 1D-X mkii, that's why Canon has a 1D-C. So it looks like Sony might introduce a9S or a7Siii.

    "chris..defending himself in forums or whatever he does in his offtime.." hahaha!!
    love this review! more like this. Is it true that both card slots are not SDXC II? so only one is best for recording 4k?

    They're pribably going to make an A9s and A9r. Log is probably going to come in the A9s just to make money, but it is still madness that it is not any log in this camera

      Edit: Wrote this comment before he mentioned an A9s in the video

    SONY will have (i think) 2-3 versions of this camera and in a 8-10 months A10. Seems really great but im stuck now with fujifilm and love the support they give the cameras. No Sony rip-off. But seems really great.

    Yea, I'm also buffled by the fact they handicapped the video features by removing S-Log.
    Terrible choice. Please don't be like Canon, Sony. Because up until this point you have been doing so well.
