Dude, I live in Coimbatore. Born and brought up here. I can understand Malayalam while others speaking. I can watch Malayalam movies without subtitles. I am generally good at languages. Even though, I studied in Tamil medium , I didn't find any difficulty in speaking in English. But, Malayalam is hard to crack man. Very difficult to speak.

Yes, Malayalam and Tamil share several vocabularies since they belong in Dravidian family. But it is far less than 90%. Just like the similarities between Swedish and Norwegian (both belonging in the same family). But Malayalam grammar is very different since Malayalam lacks subject verb agreements. Another thing is Tamil spoken in regions like Thenkasi and Tirunelveli tend to be more closer towards Malayalam in terms of vocabularies. Tamil spoken in Northern regions tend to be closer to Kannada and Telugu in terms of vocabularies.

My mother , a Bengali , grown up in Mumbai married a Malayalee who did his entire education from Kerala. She picked up and speaks Malayalam fluently. This was 48 years ago. So I won't agree Malayalam is a tough language. I speak and also read and write Malayalam. I have never lived in Kerala.

Many foreigners (Hermann Gundert, Benjamin Bailey, Arnos Pathiri, etc.) learned Malayalam and wrote their works in Malayalam since Malayalam is quite easy to learn. It's partially true. I am a native Odia speaker. Hindi was very easy to learn. Tamil I can speak and understand (can't read). Malayalam I still haven't learnt properly after trying for so long (they have many different dialects/accents of it). BUT THE MOST DIFFICULT IS NAGAMESE. Trying to learn Nagamese requires dedication of a completely different level altogether. Nothing has been as hard as Nagamese till date.
Malayalam can be learned easily after proper practice through proper materials. All languages have various accents and dialects. But with Malayalam, the grammar is very simple.

Yes, Malayalam and Tamil share several vocabularies since they belong in Dravidian family. But it is far less than 90%. Just like the similarities between Swedish and Norwegian (both belonging in the same family). But Malayalam grammar is very different since Malayalam lacks subject verb agreements.
Another thing is Tamil spoken in regions like Thenkasi and Tirunelveli tend to be more closer towards Malayalam in terms of vocabularies. Tamil spoken in Northern regions tend to be closer to Kannada and Telugu in terms of vocabularies.

My mother , a Bengali , grown up in Mumbai married a Malayalee who did his entire education from Kerala. She picked up and speaks Malayalam fluently. This was 48 years ago. So I won't agree Malayalam is a tough language. I speak and also read and write Malayalam. I have never lived in Kerala.
They say in terms of accurate pronunciation. Most malayalees can differentiate native speakers and non-native speaker's accent. Though there are exceptions where people are fluent thoroughly.

Malayalam evolved from Proto Tamil and Sanskrit, mixed up with many other languages including Arabic, Syrian, Portuguese, English, Dutch, French, Persian, Hindustani (various dialects of Hindi and Urdu) etc and become what is known now. The script evolved from Grandha lipi, Vattezhuthu, Kolezhuthu etc to the present day Malayalam Aksharamala. Malayalam grammar has also evolved slowly. It's partially true. I am a native Odia speaker. Hindi was very easy to learn. Tamil I can speak and understand (can't read). Malayalam I still haven't learnt properly after trying for so long (they have many different dialects/accents of it). BUT THE MOST DIFFICULT IS NAGAMESE.
Trying to learn Nagamese requires dedication of a completely different level altogether. Nothing has been as hard as Nagamese till date.

As for Tamil, Kannada, Tulu, and Telugu, Duarte Barbosa writes that they were part of Kingdom of Narsyngua (also known as Vijayanagar Kingdom) (Book “The Book of Duarte Barbosa: An Account of the countries bordering on the Indian Ocean and their inhabitants, written by Duarte Barbosa and completed about the Year 1518 A.D.” by Mansel Longworth Dames, Vol. 1, Pg. 182-184)..
This explains why Tamil is grammatically close to Kannada, Tulu, and Telugu.
David Dean Schulman points out that there has been a wrong tendency among historical linguists to think that Malayalam was diverged directly from Tamil.
“There has been a tendency among historical linguists to think of Malayalam as having diverged directly from Tamil (the Tamil is spoken from the ancient times in what is today Kerala), perhaps as late as the thirteenth century. But this view is almost certainly wrong. Tamil and Malayalam must have separated from one another at a much earlier stage perhaps around the first millennium AD, as we can see from the several surviving archaic features of Malayalam." "The preservation of many early linguistic features in Malayalam and the altered reflections of those features in Tamil point to the differentiation between the East coast (Tamil area) and the West coast (Malayalam area)” - A. Marco Polo (who lived in 13th century and early 14th century) also points out that Melibar (or Malabar) is a great kingdom lying towards the west. The people are Idolaters; they have a language of their own, and a king of their own, and pay tribute to nobody (The Travels of Marco Polo, Book 3, Chapter 25).
We Malayalees, irrespective of our beliefs and religions, take pride in our language, Malayalam. Unlike in some regions where people of different religions speak different languages, in Kerala, we share one language and a common cuisine. This unity is a significant reason why divisive tactics, including those by any political party, are less effective among us.
