I love that there's several "Best synth solo of all time" videos out there and it's almost always Cory Henry playing the filthiest keys you've ever heard
Imagine your “messin around” moments-but there’s a host of people that will go home and spend the next month transcribing them. It’s crazy too because geniuses like Corey will usually forget this moment even happened 2 months from now. They’ll have created 40 more moments similar because it’s their standard. Smh wow.
When Cory says "Aye!" after doing a crazy melodic line off top in a song, that's his way of saying musically "I'm preaching right now.". But it is nice however to see that even he in all his greatness can get caught up in a lick and needs to stop to get more practice. He's actually human. I had to see it to believe it. Lol
song is "All This Love" by DeBarge. I would go so far as to call this a cover, versus saying he's soloing over "the chords" - yes it's a solo but he's following the melody and the song structure for the vast majority of this
The inimitable Cory Henry "warming up" on the piano before a recording session... Today's sheet music trivia (first to answer correctly gets the PDF)- Cory: "How many _____?!"
Probably just that he would have kept up the pace at the end but his hands were cramping up from moving so fast without being fully warmed up lol. Think that's why he cut those runs into pieces
@Nestor yeah my only explanation was that he was thinking longer runs down the whole of the keyboard, but honestly nobody would have known if he just said nothing XD
in measure ten you should have written those as 16th notes on the 1 and e, and on the 3 and e instead of using grace notes. Using grace notes offsets the line in that measure, being one 16th note early.
Anyone have any guesses on how to make a patch like that? Sounds like an octave sine with a little bit of detune and distortion but that’s just my best guess. Dude killed it tho
Cory Henry really is an outstanding musician. But this isn't even close to touching his performance on the solo he did with Snarky Puppy's "Lingus". Now THAT to me was some groundbreaking music!!!! And... PLEASE, believe me when I say, "I have nothing but good things to say about Cory's playing". He's amazing. PERIOD!!!!!!

im confused by the transcription at 1:59. the pitch is obviously descending in this sequence, but bar 60 shows it as higher than bar 59, which is not what i hear. is there an inferred 8vb marking, or am i missing something, or is it simpler than that :D thanks
Isn’t there already a legal experiment where some group used permutation to write all possible copyrightable melodies? It’s a tough balance, but one of the things that keeps me from trying to write songs is that mathematically, almost everything has been done, especially in the last 100 years.
Man this is what wypipo misunderstand so much about black folk when they call us "cocky" or "showboating" etc... like these little moments of smiling and going "yeah" you see from Cory here... it's just part of the culture, this natural expression of joy when you've done something good. Nothing self-aggrandizing about it, just pure, effusive, celebratory joy.
Lovely cover...making it sing. El debarge does not get props for his song writing and keyboard playing..Think he originally wrote this song for Marvin Gaye.
Keith Emerson is good, but I offer 4 words (all proper nouns): Jack McDuff, Winifred Atwell. And you're welcome. It's Cory Henry's time now, but folks always gotta bring up somebody from 50 years ago, SMDH...
tf. is going on in 0:38. Already there, that mini change is insane. It's like you are just following a simple groove in minor at the beginning and then from the change in rythm(that one realizes too slow) changes and variations follow en mas! And they are just playing around in between whatever they are doing. .. .. ...
@@nezkeys79 I am just talking about the chord change. And how the accompanying piano is playing. he varies it 3-4 ways i think. The lead melody Cory is playing changes even more. And those two combined does something also. Not to over complicate things, but the simplest and first example i get, before it all gets to complex for my eyes and ears while i am playing video games on the side, is at 0:38. It's not just a simple push, like the ones you can do all through the music. There is a short change(maybe it is a happy accident, who knows) the root is still Ab, but the top right hand chord is is an Eb without the 3rd and 5th is meloding as an octave. It's a crazy one. I think even in CH's ears it sounds foreign(the look on his face he givesXD). They repeat the figure one more time where the accompanying is asking something about repeating again(I think), but even thought CH nods yeah, he doesn't. I am a bit confused there, but it all adds up in the end. Somehow they keep making magic look so simple.
@Ianthe22 like I said before, rhythmically they are just simple pushes on the quaver before every beat. As for the chord it's just an Abmajor9 (which is essentially an Eb triad over Ab). As for what cory is playing he just outlines notes of the chords + pentatonics almost all the time. The F over the Abmaj9 chord is just a passing note for colour
@@nezkeys79 There you go. The missing chord is the Abmajor9 that isn't written in the sheet. That is what I was on about. Now even though you are not wrong when you are analyzing the notes written in the in the score underneath, try using your ears and change your perspective from there. Try play it out on your own piano with the Abmaj9 and Eb with the doubbling of the 5th and the missing 3rd.(ofc also play CH's melody also), then compare it to the playing in the video. Now does it sound like Abmaj9 or does it sound like it changed to a Eb? Just start from there and we can take the groove afterwards if it is funny.

Yeah the ones featuring Rick Wakeman setting new land speed records typically call them keyboards.
but this doesnt make it true. but cory is nice.
My man playing piano is absolutely killing the rhythm section too 🔥
100%. Two very talented musicians. Piano was outstanding, as was Cory on the synth.
That comp was so in the pocket and timiest bit behind - coming in to consolidate - just luscious and beautiful
His choice of voicings is crazy! Everything sounds so beautiful when it's suppose to
Cory’s solo is great and all, but my eyes are all glued to the piano, that comping is TASTEFUL
The Triton "Express Lead" my favorite lead patch of all time.
Mine also, definitely!
i knew that tone sounded familiar
Thanks for that. I'll check if my Kronos has it too..
Chord progression is All this love by Debarge for anybody wondering
and the head/solos, etc. are all based on the song
Cory Henry is such a an incredible talent. Thank you for sharing.
Crazy that he actually has a voice. I thought he only speaks through a keyboard

My favorite synth solo is by Kai Akagi on Miles Davis Live Around The World. This solo is much more difficult. Henry is awesome
The transcribers notes are so funny!! 🤣 1:22
Why ? Those are exact i think, no ?
That gave me goosebumps.
0:47-0:57 crazy how he can adapt the melody to a higher octave like that. Nobody has timing like Cory Henry
its a keyboard lol. An octave up is the same as an octave down 😂😂
Right but he’s mimicking the melody of el debarge…he started on the f then for some reason chose to stop and start again on the f in the next octave…

According to some other comment in this video, it's called "Express Lead" on the synth Triton. Hope this helps you in your research!
that “aye” should be notated as an “ayy”

At 1:05 what is the Cq2 notation. Is "q2" just to notate "quartile" or is it something more than just that?
It's Cm(7, 11), also the next chord is a Db7sus4. I felt also confused with the Bm11 afterwards, sounds more like a Bb7(#9) to me
