The Curious Case of Asajj Ventress & Dark Disciple's Canonicity

  • Sanak closes out The Bad Batch show era with a discussion on one of the final season's biggest sticking points - Why was Asajj Ventress brought back to life in The Bad Batch if she (still) canonically died in Dark Disciple? He gives a canon-sourced explanation on how her once-finale novel supports a resurrection, and compares how this situation and its upfront messaging is different from two of the most notable "canon-breaking" case studies - key plot points from the Ahsoka novel by E.K. Johnston, and The Bad Batch's retcon of Caleb Dume's (Kanan Jarrus) Order 66 origin. He further expands on how Dark Disciple's development process, old viewpoints of 'canon' under Lucasfilm, and the constantly changing demands of Star Wars fans and content have shaped how canon has been handled by Lucasfilm.

Appreciate you all covering this. Dark Disciple remains a high point in all of star wars for me. Ventress hopefully will have a large role in some format going forward. Otherwise it would feel like a complete waste and disregard to a great book.

Definitely! It is super interesting how Dark Disciple's legacy is being so publicly supported in an era that increasingly feels like it has the traits of pre-Disney with prioritizing movies -> TV -> games -> books -> comics, so we definitely want more than just an odd reference to whatever comes next for Asajj. If they really do emphasize how massive Dark Disciple is in the future, especially with its plot of a Jedi-approved assassination on Dooku, then we may return to something closer to the ideal of everything having equal worth in canon emphasized a decade ago. Glad you enjoyed the video!

@@starwarslads I like that canon has these little retcons and contradictions like legends
I love the idea of star wars being a myth and so many stories are being documented from the different POV. it makes it feel so real.

Cool video liked the explaination. By the way I have watched liams video on his star wars book and comics collection. It is impressive, I have been building it off and on for the past few years mostly with canon books from the high republic but i bought recently truce at bakura at a used book store. TO be honest, The acolyte as gotten me back into reading SW comics and books again because for the past year i have felt bad because i was being told that it was bad to like the new canon novels and comics.

You guys have given me the courage to come back into the fold, but it is still hard recently i was watching Corey's datapad podcast. He has gotten a lot of hate for liking parts of the acolyte and Eckhardtsladder has said people told him that they were unsubscribing from him because he was defending people who liked the show even he does not really like it. Those 2 and you guys welcome disagreement this is the way the fandom should operate and to me it is childish to get mad at somebody just because you liked something they dislike.

It's great that you're getting back into reading both Canon and Legends/EU thanks to The Acolyte! Some of the best storytelling throughout Star Wars' history is found in the books. We both think Truce of Bakura is actually a bit underrated, despite its sillier elements. Liam definitely has a massive collection haha!
Like we said before, even if we do or don't like things in Star Wars, we'll discuss it and make sure our strongest criticisms are grounded in filmmaking elements. While doing so, we also will always make sure to have positive and fair discussion in our comments from our fandom. Just know that you or anyone comes with good intentions and genuinely is making and effort to start a good line of discussion, we'll always consider it and discuss it with the rest of y'all!
