West Ham United have made an enquiry about signing Bologna star Riccardo Calafiori this summer, according to David Ornstein.
Writing on The Athletic website (18 June), the reliable journalist reports that the Hammers have opened talks about signing the Italy international while Liverpool, Newcastle and Brighton have also got an interest in the 22-year-old.
Bologna want to keep the centre-back and hope the lure of Champions League football with them will be enough to keep him, having just started for Italy against Albania at EURO 2024.
After sealing a deal for Luis Guilherme early in the transfer window, it seems now that the Hammers have turned their attention to strengthening the defence.
The club have held talks with Mats Hummels‘ agent, made contact with Ryan Sessegnon and started talks with Wolves for Max Kilman and it’s clear that the plan is to bolster centre-back in particular.
Kurt Zouma could leave and there are question marks about the future of Nayef Aguerd, leaving Lopetegui needing to bolster his squad.
Calafiori would be a real coup for the club considering his outstanding performances in the 2023/24 season helped Bologna to a fifth-placed finish and Champions League football.
He is currently featuring for Italy at Euro 2024 too, playing 90 minutes during their 2-1 win over Albania in the tournament opener, so Hammers fans should keep their eyes peeled for a potential new player.

He’s an excellent player (Calafiori). No chance of it happening though, I reckon. Worry with Kilman is that Wolves fans seem very happy to sell him - don’t remember him being in contention for England’s squad either

Same manager who didn't take Braithwaite. Been the best center-half in the league, certainly English centre half.
Hard to get head around spending as much money on CB as a quality striker - if that's what it takes to get a top one in, and we really need at least one (jury still out on Mavropanos), and a ball playing CB essential for how we intend to play, then suppose we have to cough up

Do you think the new gaffer is considered Johnson at center back? He did it for England and now that our center backs don’t have to be huge dudes like under Moyes. Would be interested to see if Johnson was 4th string
45 mill for Kilman? 40 mill for Calafiori? It wasn't that long ago that we wouldn't consider paying anywhere near this much for a striker.
Think this is just to try get the Kilman fee down, showing you can get a younger Italian international defender for less…. Next bid for Kilman incoming……
Dont mind Kilman as the gaffer wants him but Callafiori is a the better of the two. Im leaning towards Perez, Greaves or even Jake O'Brien, maybe all three for around 50mil and thats the defence sorted. Get Enesyri in, a LW and if theres still money left a young RB. Big ask but crazier things have happened at WH.haha COYI⚒️

I kept an eye on him in all 3 group matches, and he looked pretty decent. My concern with him is that he’s fairly slight for a CB and in the PL CBs need to have a considerable physicality to them.
Re: Garcia, pretty sure Leverkusen were well into chasing him before we showed interest. Not much of a choice to make for Garcia. Mid table side in the PL or the best ever side in the Bundesliga.

Never heard of him Geo, but I do trust Tim. Younger than Kilman and with a better investment potential, but Kilman is home grown, Loppy's pick and possible captain. Interesting times. Sully is still holding the purse strings in the shadows, as we saw with Osman.
Personally never bought the excuse of our style of football being the reason we let too many goals in last season, as if that was the case why did Everton under the defensive minded Sean Dyche let in far less goals? Simple, they had a couple of better, more reliable centre halves. Moyes got the Zouma and Aguerd signings horribly wrong. Zouma more so as the signs were there with his medical and we still took the risk. Albeit, we still won a trophy so not all doom and gloom, but if we aspire to be competing for the top 8, we need a defence as good as what Everton’s was last season. Look at Kilman’s record under Lopetgui. It all makes sense why we want him and I hope Sullivan doesn’t let our new Head Coach down.
It’s perfectly understandable we want 1-2 leaders too as you don’t have as many tonkings as we had last season if you wasn’t lacking in some characters.
I'd be happy with either. Honestly, I am quite optimistic with the early signs as per our new transfer set-up. I'm going to trust it until proven otherwise 😁 (i.e when Sullivan inevitable gets too involved).

It’s seems like Kilman is our number 1 cb target and the others are options if we can’t agree a deal for Kilman. And the 2cd cb will probably be cheaper
Geo you are right Aleix Garcia was captain at Girona FC, so it looks like we are.going for Max Kilman, shame I prefer Riccardo Calafiori. Now Ogbonna left, not having an Italian Centre Back in defence, would be a shame. Sorry, grew up watching Italian football on Channel 4 months 90s.
I am glad I hearing Jacob Greaves name again, but I know that was more Geo hoping we are still the West Ham shopping list. Zouma, if we Let him go for.£5 million, we be lucky, as Gonzo keeps on saying, Zouma won't pass a medical. He might get a couple more seasons playing if he goes to Spain or Italy? That's if Saudi Arabia don't come in for him.
I disagree, I think he would pass one fine. Injury prone players pass medicals all the time, the price usually reflects the risk associated. His knees were trouble before coming here and he passed one!
But yes, big fan of Greaves myself, do you think Lopetegui wants a captain or am 2+2=5?
@@HammersChatsorry showing my age, AM, that mean an Attacking Midfielder? I believe Lopetegui wants both, he wants a Captain and an Attacking Midfielder, hopefully that Attacking Midfielder is a right footed Left Winger. So we can move Kudus to number 10 role behind the striker
I agree with the Max Kilman is good, but he is not £45 million good. That's why I was hopefully for Aleix Garcia. So we could get 2 good Centre Backs and not focus on Max Kilman at his silly price. As you always say Wolves are entitled to put a whatever price tag they want.
The Captain, do you think one of problems last season, not having a good Captain? We were spoiled for years having Kevin Nolan (the first thing Sam Allardyce did, get a leader on the pitch), then he training up Mark Noble, (great Captain, but just a good player, not excellent player like Nolan and Rice.) Then Noble trained up Rice to be our next Captain. This were I agree with you about Zouma, he is not Captain material. When it was going wrong, where was Zouma? Zouma is on para with Matthew Upson as Captain, very good defender, but terrible Captain.
We need more than a defender who can just defend (Dinos for example). We need a vocal leader/organiser. We are sadly lacking that with Zouma right now
Cant see anybody paying Zouma his wages and a fee and also considering he has to pass a medical. Not sure the Saudi league want cast offs any longer either. Gonna be hard to find suitors.
Seeing the large sums of cash going out on players, like 30 m plus on each player, will this affect our FFP next season? Because we are linked with a lot!

Wolves are asking 45 mill because of the sell on clause and I think we should tell them to jog on and keep Kilman he isn't worth it? Surely we could spend that amount on one quality CB? or 2 younger CB's on the cusp of breaking into first team football?

@HammersChat totally agree, offload Aguerd, and this would be very possible. With the other teams sniffing around, I wouldn't expect this to happen.

I do wonder how flexible Wolves will feel like being with the price and terms given the history with JL. Know its business and they might need the income to avoid FFP issues etc. But they probably won't fancy doing Lopetguei any favours either. Think we may end up paying a bit of reparation tax if we really want him.

I think we need 4 CBs in total. 3 isn't going to be enough. We certainly have needed 4 for the last several years, and even then we've been stretched at CB at times. So Dinos, Greaves, one of Calafiori Kilman or Milenkovic, and 1 more. I'm assuming it's not going to be Kaelan Casey.
Part of the reason we have needed 4 is because one is Kurt Zouma and we had European football.
Ogbonna only made 7 starts in the PL and that’s with the above, I think Casey as 4th would be fine as long as the other 3 are good and have a good injury record
@@HammersChat 19/20 was the last time we used 3. 20/21 we used 4. 4 in 21/22. 4 in 22/23 if you allow for Kehrer. 4 last season.
If Casey can deputize as the 4th then I'm with you. We've relied on some aging and shattered knees last few seasons.

Agree but a ‘big’ signing at CB and striker plus couple other signings and we’ll be fine, I think.

All these politicians getting investigated by the gambling commission - I hope they are looking at 40 year or Whole Life bans like the F.A are looking with Paquetá..! I know the F.A are not government run but these politicians were looking to make personal profit for themselves, let's see their punishments - I guarantee an apology and they be back within a year... To me the politicians are worse cases of fixing gambling then what Paquetá is alleged to of done..!⚒️

@@HammersChat We will see which agents we use which should provide an inkling. It only takes a late phone call like in the example of Osman from an agent telling him he's not all that. Sullivan still has to sign it off.

@@HammersChat He gets credit for backing Tim, but we seemed to have a free run at him. Even then it was drawn out for weeks in the public eye, so if anyone else really wanted him they had plenty of opportunity to do so. Time will tell, if we got Garcia I would have been impressed and it would have been a statement of intent. Most likely we didn't even go in quickly with his release clause. Would be interested to know if we met it and if we did could we have got him?

Kilman is bang average from what I’ve seen of him. Any English centre half nowhere near the England squad, at a good age with mixed views from his own fans is a no from me for that kind of money. A Dawson punt absolutely, but I wouldn’t be spending that kind of money on him from what I’ve seen of him. Milenkovic and Perez for similar money combined, add Greaves after Aguerd and Zouma have gone. Job done at Centre half.
Forget this Italian bloke, why would he? For the wrong reasons only I'd guess. Kilman at anything above 25m would make us a laughing stock.

Saudi League places/pays a premium on Muslim players + I believe Zouma is a muslim ? No issues if Zouma is still a Hammer next season
