I absolutely love this channel! Football was so much faster back then. Physically, it was a miles tougher game than the soft game it is today. Shame. I miss it even tho both my shins are still lumps & bumps! Seems ludicrous today that we hardly ever wore shinpads either. Those were the days.
I recently bought a 1968 Dandy annual from a local charity shop and cannot help think what today's mass, mind-laundered youth would make of it. Would the majority swap their Virtual Reality games for a good book. I doubt it! But l would be thrilled to hear of any that would!
Celtic-Rangers: Check out 35:42 to .36:05. Hard tackle, and the 2 players just get right up, smile at each other, pat each other on the cheek, and keep playing. Today? Same play, will necessitate a 10 minute medical break and the players will be writhing on the ground, in feigned pain, trying to draw a yellow - or they would be in each others face, threatening each other, trying to "prove" who is the "man". Watching these old videos show why soccer is the "beautiful game", and how corrupted the modern game is, in comparison.
I watch these old Big Match replays and pull up the songs that were popular at that time and watch the games. Look at the difference of the game compared to today's, no flopping and laying on the ground for 2 minutes, space on the pitch with not everybody within 15 yards of the ball, and throw ins that don't take 25 seconds and running 10 metres away from the spot. The games moves along so smoothly.
Greame Pattern, what a free kick that was, if that was a Brazilian scoring it it would be shown again and again… imagine him today with these lighther balls….
A better time to be going to rock concerts (remember those as they were from the 60’s thru say the late 1990’s) ? in general entertainment was simply better.
As someone who never watched The Big Match or Match of the day with Jimmy Hill and some of his "statements" - I am amazed he was able to get into football grounds without trouble ! - Good to hear the great Arthur Montford !
That doesn't make sense what Jimmy Hill says at 32.38 when talking about Bobby Moore. All he had to do was let the video run another five seconds and we knew where Bobby played the ball!! 😂😂😂
from the various uploads I've seen of this era, Frank Lampard Sr was a clumsy and fairly naff player. Would've had a yellow almost every game nowadays.
Westham v Liverpool game was exilerating. 100% commitment from both teams. What a match!
There was a lot of quick football in those days..natural energy ..... enthusiasm .... quick and direct.. must have been great to watch as a fan live..

Players concentrated on the game more back then rather than looking good. But the sexual revolution of the 60's was starting to bear it's evil fruit.

Don't try to tell me the modern game with its constant feigning of injury, diving in the box at the slightest touch, is better than this 70's model.
My first ever 'big' football match - given tickets as a 10th birthday present - so great memories to relive.

Superb!
The legend that was Kevin Keegan begins.
Great to see Alf Wood scoring! #OldSchool
Much more entertaining than the stifled game of Sky TV.
Far better time to be watching football, believe me.
Certainly was!!

Good analysis by Jimmy Hill. Wah woeful, truth be told up front.
Both these clubs at the very compact Upton Park usually gave great games.
Giles with a clear dive. Dirty Leeds

These were footballers who played the game with there hearts on there sleeves not like the over paid footballers today

Chinny Hill always had something to say..
He didn't mince his words & he knew his subject being player, manager & chairman.
At least this isn't the chum fest stats obsessed that we have on sky and motd.
Someone stole the countdown clock before our very eyes!
We love those new opening titles Brian !!
