Netdecking is great for new players (and also terrible)

  • Its been a good 15 years or so since people started using the term "net decking". To be honest I feel like most people understand that its a good way to learn the game, but I've been running into some folks lately who are seriously against it, and as always I made a video about it.

"Netdecking" is just the Yugioh term for the general sharing of information, which is how the entirety of how society works. Saying that people shouldn't netdeck when learning the game is like saying every human should have to reinvent the wheel before they can drive a car.

This is both true, and generally understood by most people. But for some reason recently, I've been running into a bunch of folks who seem to disagree. Though maybe thats just a good sign that Duel Links is starting to attract new players again.

I think viewing other decks to gain insight on why they play certain things is a good way to grow as a player. I wanted to play sylvans, but knew that they couldnt keep up in the present day. I saw rikka sunavalon getting a lot of attention, and looked into it. I then decided that the Rikka portion would synergize with the sylvan portion more and took out the sunavalon engine. I still get the pros to sunavalon over sylvan, but I get to play something that is mine by tweaking ratios and finding a good balance to make the deck put up solid boards while the sylvan portion can generate card advantage through hermitree, allowing me to to dig for hand traps for my opponents turn, while having a similar board to rikka sunavalon. (Sometimes I dont get to bhengalancer, or will choose to dig for hand traps/card advantage instead.) And with aromage support coming out, and seeing how it synergiezes with rikka, im super excited to work it into my sylvan rikka, while most others put it in rikka sunavalon.

I mean, the game has over 10K cards, no one can hope to build something optimal alone. Even I after all these years still blind copy a deck whenever I try to play a new archetype until I get a feeling on how it works before making my personal changes to it.

I quit maybe early 5d's era back when I was in school, never had the money to really play. Got back in maybe a year ago? Found my love for F.A. via netdecking and have evolved a deal of my playstyle from what was someone elses deck. It even got me enough experence to try rebuilding my old Union deck with new cards. If it wasnt for that random F.A. deck odds where I would have gotten annoyed quickly and given up trying to get back into it all.

I'm not that good at deck building, so I use "net decking" like a tool to understand the basics of a deck I want to play.
However, I've experienced both sides (more or less).
In LotD, I built my own deck based on my favourite monster type (Zombies). It wasn't that great but it kinda worked. Plus: It was MY deck so I kinda knew what I wanted to do with it (even though there was room for improvement).
After switching to Master Duel, things changed.
I stumbled across the "Vendread" archetype and wanted to built a deck around it. So I started looking online for a deck profile and found an interesting one. Plus: it used some cards which were also part of my LotD Zombie - Deck.
So I basically copied the Main deck. Couldn't copy the extra deck because I didn't have enough CP, so I just put some decent monsters in it.
However, I realized that the main deck can be quite brick -y. (some duels started with me pulling 4 - 5 ritual monsters for my starting hand).
Probably going to change that soon.
So netdecking can be a great tool but people should adjust those decks according to their own preferences aterwards.

I like using net decking as the basis for learn how a strategy works, and then trying to modify the deck with whatever jank or new ideas that actually work in it I can. Because new cards come out often, it's possible to upgrade a deck that was originally net decked into something more your own. Basically net decking is good for players looking to learn how a deck works, and then they can see what they can change about it to make it better. Also players on a budget might have a better time knowing what they should specifically get, because they won't usually have access to much card wise anyways, so knowing what to spend gems on is important

Theres nothing quite like figuring out an OTK on your own.
When I was in HS I figured out an OTK with Ultimate offering, Black Ptera, and Cannon Soldier.
You pay 500 lp with Ultimate Offering to set Black Ptera then tribute it with cannon soldier until both players lp were at 500 then just tribute cannon soldier for game.
You set it to play around Torrential Tribute since if you normal summon it after the first cannon soldier loop they would just torrential right after.

Just grabbing a list without understanding why the cards in it are in there is bad. It's the ram ranch approach to learning a game. But with such a huge card pool, you absolutely need to be looking at others' tech choices to get an idea of what's going through other people's minds so you can tailor your own list to the current meta, as well as slowly developing a sense for optimizing deckbuilding by looking at lots of builds, both mediocre and pro-level. You end up getting an idea of the kinds of players you'll run into, the kinds of mistakes they'll make, etc. all from just looking at why people put certain cards in their decklists. It's kind of like getting the sparknotes from a bunch of matches you would have otherwise maybe had to play out yourself. It's not the same as raw experience but you sure can pack a lot of theoretical knowledge in quickly, then develop the practical knowledge in actual playtesting, saving yourself a ton of time.

I tend to start with a net deck and go from there. Yu-Gi-Oh has an ungodly amount of cards and I have no clue what I'm supposed to do with several of them. How am I supposed to build a half decent deck if I don't know what I should be doing or what "Card that I've never heard of that ties this whole thing together #1537" is? Once I've net decked, I play with it a bit before trying to make it my own. Perhaps I find it bricking too easily, so I squeeze in an engine or more consistency cards. Perhaps I feel like a certain card isn't for me, so I swap it for something I have more faith in. Perhaps I get a really funny idea that the deck could use, so I find a way to squeeze in that piece of tomfoolery. It's all about understanding the deck first, and then building off of it.

I don't play the game that much, admittedly, but I would find it impossible to really enjoy Yugioh as a game if I didn't have the ability to find decklists online and use them. I'm not good with deckbuilding in a constructed format where I don't have any limits on available cards, because then there's too much choice. I operate better when I have limits on what I can do. I can build decks from scratch, but I'm not good at operating very far outside the 20-15-5 ratio, and that ratio becomes harder to adhere to when you're dealing with Tribute summoning, Rituals, or Synchros, since the monsters have to interact with one another in very specific ways. It's also hard when you have newer stuff like Tenpai Dragons that don't have a lot of archetypal cards to fill the slots--I like pure decks--and perfectly serviceable interactions just don't cut it even in casual duels.
Maybe as a consequence of my fanfiction adventures, I like taking pre-existing things and messing around with them. It's a lot of fun to take a Structure Deck and throw random cards in it.

  • @NateVG
    @NateVG 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

Both sides on the "net decking" are right in my opinion, it's just that each side is more adamant on their take than the other, if we just list what impact net decking does, then we can see it like this (I know it's long, but bear with me):
    - What good does net decking do for the players?
It gives you information on the desired ratio for each card for the deck you want to build, as well as cards that synergize with them or the meta that's on-going (for example BoM for Floo deck and Kash "meta", Bystial in Dragonlink deck and Tear0 meta) and as the video said, you got the result of potentially hundred of hours of testing just by net decking without wasting your time doing so.
However, there's another step every player should do after this, which is *understanding how to play the deck, try to change and improve YOUR deck according to YOUR experience playing with it.*
    - Now why does the action of net decking has such bad reputation to some?
If you look back at my point earlier you can see that despite what I said, there ARE players who never take the next step, those who, after net decking, refuse to learn how the deck really works, refuse to read, and refuse to even change ONE card in their deck when they keep having problem with a specific interaction, then blame it on the deck itself and the guy who they were net decking from, after losing one duel after another not knowing where to start, what to summon or what their cards can do. And trust me, this happened a lot more than I can count.
For example, I had a duel with a Dlink player who probably was net decking since they used an outdated Dlink deck (I know this since I've been playing Dlink for over 2 years now) they saw me using Triple tactic talent's stealing effect to force their I:P, then lo and behold, they did activate I:P, but not reading the Triple Tactic Talent's effect, they end up making a 4-mat Apollousa just for it to get stolen, effectively just end the whole game right there since they wipe their whole field for me, how can you say the deck is bad when your skill is not up to par?
In my experience, this rarely happen in physical format, but then again some mistake can happen if they read the card's effect wrong, this problem is more common in online yugioh I feel like, and I can see why but please stop and think for a bit when you don't read other people's cards, misplayed and wasted your interruption, to then blame the deck being bad when you lose. Even I would feel pity for your deck...
But at the end of the day, it's all go back to the "vocal minority" when it come to this topic, miracle does happen, there are players who make a pile of junks work together, there are players who keep changing their deck according to their need until it truly become their original deck, we just don't see it that often (except for LVK's viewers), but that's just my opinion.

  • @tndesignmedia
    @tndesignmedia 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

IMO people who keep saying net decking is wrong are just gatekeeping the game. If the person is having fun, what's the problem? The game is already difficult to learn, which prevents many from joining, and in Duel Links you still have to worry about how to spend your gems wisely.

Much like most things in learning, netdecking should be seen as a tool.
It's good because it can give you a starting point that gets past a lot of the trial and error in making a build.
It can be bad, however, if you don't take the time to understand how and why said build works the way it does. I said *_a lot_* of the trial and error, not *_all of it_*
You can copy the world champ and stomp your friends, but the minute they realize what's going on (AND HAVEN'T QUIT LIKE MOST MUGGLES), they will prepare, they will learn, and they will expose you as a fraud.

In the context of yugioh specifically, which actually kinda same with most competitive game, you did not obligated at all to copy other people deck just because you research for it. Keeping up with what most people who succeeds in tournament play IS A STRATEGY. Look how many people playing random rogue deck in YCS for example, who do you think they can netdeck from?.
You CAN'T AND NEVER would make a perfect best deck in a vacuum of any card game ever. That's why it's so important to just look what others play even if you don't understand a single thing about their decks.
It's just a combination of cards and customizable to any meta currently so even if you netdeck it isn't a guarantee a win and not make you unoriginal because there's like thousands of people who build that deck even before you thought of play it.
There's almost no downside of netdecking for me because after you know your core cards, you will have your own hunch of what's good for you or not then eventually modifying the deck yourself.

Netdecking is good for everyone, new or old players. It doesn't limit skill expression or innovation.
After building the standard core there is still room for skill by adding/choosing the most effective generic cards for a certain meta game or for creativity/innovation by adding random techs. The top100 lists from KCC or DC are good examples of this.
