I suppose you have to get used to "owning nothing" In the 18th Century the Mudflud everybody became diggers with a horse and cart. The people became an army. Yor wages were what you found in the wrecked ground floors and basements of the building. They created new hils and mountains out of the mud. All the rubbish was removed from the mud. The cleanup got done.
If people had done research before developing in a flood plain (RAD/Swannanoa), 2004 was enough evidence not to build there. They would never have had this problem. Now taxpayers are going to have to bail them out. I hope though, as a result it's rebuilt more sustainably. The 1 in 100 or 1000 claim is a naive notion. Not backed by hundreds of years of data collection.
One wonders what sort of pollutants ended up in the river like the coal ash ponds that were flooded.
Sayles Biltmore Bleachery was a designated brown field by the federal government. A toxic waste site too expensive to o clean up and build up on. The Walmart Supercenter sits on that site and no clean up was ever done. That ground probably leached toxins into the Swanannoa River. On another video a man complained that his skin was burning from exposure to that mud, as he cleaned up his building across the street from Walmart.
There are reasons why those buildings were vacant for decades. Newcomers couldn't believe their luck, all the empty buildings.
