    About what you said about the hierachy, the members themselves have said that they've decided to not put too much focus on that since predebut as to avoid any arguments about it between the members. This was surprising to me too and it was hard for me to know who was older or younger when I first became a carat because they were all so casual and informal with each other, no matter the age difference, including Dino, as the maknae. But I think this really helped them develop their relationship to just be like a group of brothers.

    Seventeen say themselves that their team is very "horizontal". It's quite unique how lax their age hierarchy is, to the point the younger members don't even use "hyung" sometimes when speaking to/about the older members. I think it's because they're all very comfortable with each other and they don't have a lot of ego.
    Because their main focus is what's better for the team, different members will be given the lead of the team in different situations whther they're older or younger, and everyone's opinion/idea is given the same weight and respect.
    The 3 oldest members (S.Coups, Jeonghan and Joshua) act more as the emotional/moral support for the team. And S.Coups in particular, who's both the oldest and the leader, tends to prioritize the other members' opinions or needs over his own because his role is to make sure everything stays organized and everyone gets heard.

    If we think about it, svt has been together for so long n endured a lot together that their bond is like no other. But when u look at pre-debut videos (17TV) u can actually see there was a heirarchy. U can see a predebut Dino (1999) immediately walked back out closing the door while bowing when he entered a practice room where Scoups (1995) was alrdy in😂 but over time, svt became so close knit n became one big family that even their family members are also close (like Mingyu’s n Jeonghan’s sisters are best friends too, Dino’s little brother says jokingly he prefers Vernon over Dino😂)
    17TV wasnt rlly a survival show coz there were no eliminations (trainees just left coz pledis kept putting off their debut date for 3 or so yrs n some members didnt make the cut coz they were too young apparently) it was more like pledis showing a cctv inside the practice rooms n broadcasting it n u can change which camera u wanna see from lol the members who were left were initiated with rings they wear on their pinkies as a sign that they’re part of svt n they renew it every time they release a full-length album😭 also, their debut survival show is called 17Project where they were given tasks to do to prove that they as a whole are ready to debut n gave back their rings😭
    Fun fact:
    Scoups is the oldest in svt but is the youngest in his family
    Dino is the youngest in svt but is the oldest in his family
    While Woozi is the only child but is right bang in the middle with 6 hyungs n 6 dongsaengs
    Also, in age order, they form a diamond 💎 which i think is fate😭

    the guy who was singing in the morning afer he woke up was S.COUPS (like the game they played) that's his stage name, his real name is choi seungcheol and he is the leader and oldest of the group. out of the three units in seventeen, hip-hop,vocal and performance, he belongs to the hip-hop unit and is the leader of the unit.

    According to the members themselves, Mingyu is the best cook, like he can literally do everyting, Jun was also voted by 6 members, DK can also cook a lot, only need to follow some recipes, and other can also do basic things.

  • @ifrozeyourcookie
    @ifrozeyourcookie ปีที่แล้ว +28

    The scoups game/4 syllables game is probably much lax or easier cause it was a game made from a joke lol there was a running joke that anything 4 syllables can replace scoups' name cause for some reason some people can't remember 'scoups' so jaejae introduced it this way to make light of it and have fun instead.
    I don't remember where I read this but some people said korean fans struggled knowing who is older or younger in svt bcs they relied on formalities and those stuffs to know, but svt basically treats everyone in the team more or less the same. If anything, they get upset if they were using more formal language with each other lmao cause it feels awkward. scoups even got upset with jun cause he didnt use informal language with him. Jun wasn't uncomfortable or anything, it became a habit of him to use formal tone because back when he was still learning korean, he used informal tone a lot until he accidentally used it towards the ceo so he changed his speech to avoid that embarrassing moment again. Now it just sort of stuck but he still uses a lot of casual tones with them either way.

    I like how you explained the games and their meanings behind them.. Also SVT have themselves said that they dont have a hierarchy in their grp and mostly act like same-age frnds.. They definitely have a sort of hierarchy when it comes to work like the leaders of the units and overall as well.. Members do get scolded if they dont do something properly even though the leaders might be younger than them.. other than that they are pretty chill. They are truly so lively and full of energy.. I think you would like the Dont Lie series of Going Seventeen.. They are so crazy there especially Hoshi.. they act so ridiculous and its very entertaining..lol it has few inside jokes from other Don't lie episodes so I think it would be better to watch it from the first dont lie ep..

    I'm really enjoying all of your reactions and commentaries on SVT. Really appreciate you sharing insights as well esp about Korean culture and tradition.
    As a Carat, I'm so glad to hear your thoughts about SVT as a group and the members individually. I know you're not yet familiar with most of them but you already recognize their special bond and dynamics.
    One of their best charms is being naturally friendly and fun people. They just show themselves out there. Though I'm a fan, they don't seem like unreachable stars to me. Instead, they're very relatable.
    Oh, regarding the SCoups game... It was made like that. It's not really meant to be about idioms/proverbs so you can like that game hehe. I love your storytelling though!
    SCoups game was inspired by how the public were calling SCoups (에스굽스) just any names as long as it has 4 syllables, cos they say it's hard to remember or sth like that. So in a show, MMTG, SCoups said he wanted to change his stage name. During the debate of what his new name will be, they started listing 4-syllable too. Then, voila, SCoups game :)
    And in my country, we don't usually play drinking games. But we do videoke too a lot, like it's a must. If ever there are games, they're mainly card games or beer pong.

  • @alera27
    @alera27 ปีที่แล้ว +24

    Seventeen are surprisingly one of the groups who has a lot of people who can cook. I can name Mingyu, DK, Joshua, and Jun as good cooks. The rest can cook too, but the one who definitely can't cook is Vernon. Wonwoo is also on the bad side, but he seems to be able to cook/make food that is easy to make.
    Hongsam game is where one person starts and points to two people, then those two people who got pointed at need to point to another person, and the person who gets pointed at by two people will need to make a move/dance and the rest need to follow them, then the person who got picked by two people will need to pick two people again, and the cycle repeats. The person who doesn't realize he was pointed/person who misses pointing at someone will be made to drink. Seventeen play this a lot even during in between shoots (where they can't drink) so they're honestly too good at it now.

    I love how TTT was able to bring out that nostalgia for you, this is the most watched gose ep and I saw a theory about it being because this dropped during like early covid so a lot of people missed out on these kinda hangouts of youth. That way they could live through the members just getting togheter in TTT.
    Also altough I'm not Korean so I'm not as sensitive to nuances in interactions, seventeen themselves has stated that they aren't that hierarchical. Like theyre all not very focused on ages

    Thank you so much for the reaction, the TTT series are some of my favorites Going Seventeen episodes 👋
    44:50 Seventeen have mentioned like 4-5 years ago that they eliminated the hierarchy between them and that they do not speak with formalities in private. They only use it in front of cameras, because it can be a bit shocking for people who don't know them 😅 although sometimes they forget.

  • @leeann7291

    Some of the members are really good at cooking now, like they can make everything they want. I really hope you can watch In the soop (where they basically go to the forest and rest, they cook a lot there) but it gets blocked on TH-cam so...

  • @TA-mr3pe
    @TA-mr3pe ปีที่แล้ว +6

    You are right, Seventeen have talked about how they dont have a hierarchy on purpose, its very much like same age friendships and family bonds in the group, the younger members even call the older Hyungs sometimes by name only but they all find that comfortable. They have talked about trying to match each other's personalities and accept indiviudal differences rather any one or few memebrs taking over in anyway

    Svt HYPE-ness
    - Scoups: competitive, party hype; (early morning karaoke)
    - jeonghan: hypes up trouble (one that suggested leaving ppl behind 😈)
    - Joshua: mildly hype (got confused during 4321234)
    - jun: along for the ride hype (childish, liked watching others drink)
    - hoshi: random hype, sort of an introvert outside svt (not a good drinker 🐯)
    - wonwoo: quiet hype (played videogames)
    - woozi: sober hype (homebody that doesn’t drink)
    - DK: fun hype (if it’s fun, he’s in- strong vocal chords ⚔️)
    - mingyu: teasing hype (gets teased a lot, but he’s a good sport- the one that hit himself in the head)
    - the8: calm hype (likes to meditate🧘‍♂️)
    - Seungkwan: variety show hype (knows how to make a crowd laugh, diagnosed hoshi as tipsy)
    - Vernon: does what he likes hype (took a nap by himself last episode)
    - Dino: know it all hype (youngest, but doesn’t get pushed around)

    The S.coups game, is actually much simpler than you said. It has nothjng to do with idioms.
    S.coups, he's the leader and his real name is choi seungcheul. In korean its written 에스쿱스 right. And because its 4 letters, the members jokingly use any word with 4 letters as his nickname. So they used that to make a game, they often make the most random games for drinking.
    On that note, imagine this. How much much they play these games, so the foreigners are better at these games tban many koreans hahahaha

    In France we do have a few drinking games but definitely not as many or as complicated as Korean deinking games can get. Many of them include playing cards for some reason (an easy one is guessing if your card is higher or lower than the host's, you drink if you don't guess correctly) or memorizing stuff.

    that's really interesting about 사자성어! but they actually made their own rendition of that game to be based on S.Coups/에스쿱스 (Choi Seungcheol, the leader) because many Koreans have trouble with his stage name and call him other 4 syllable names instead. like "ratatouille," "roller coaster," etc. also why they always sing Me Gustas Tu like coupstatu haha. scoups is also the one singing karaoke in the morning, he is the oldest 🤣🤣
    it's really nice that you feel nostalgic watching this, I'm not very social nor do i drink much so i have no such experiences yet
    i really love seventeen dynamics, they just seem really close. they dont place importance on hierarchy and even don't treat dino like the maknae, which he prefers and i think it's great!

    Well... drinking is itself a taboo in my country... India. Well, it changes with each State and cultures though since we have a lot of different ethnic groups and society here, but it is generally considered taboo. And I've not seen anyone doing drinking games... I've seen some fights and people passed out in drains or on the road sides and some speeding cars after drinking here. Or that's how the media portrays it here. First time I knew drinking could also be fun was through Korean programs like this

    • @komerican-og
      @komerican-og  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      In general, it is a good practice not to drink at all. ^^ Korea has been and still is a very structured and rigid society, but is made up of oddly passionate and expressive people. This mixture of opposites perhaps makes people drink. They need something to break down the wall of rigidity.

    For the s.coups game they made it like that because his name is spelled 에스쿱스 and people are calling him any 4 syllable words.
    + They make almost all the games they play. (ex. scoups game, spiderman game &etc) And they sometimes come up with new games without knowing the rules of the game just clowning eo.

    I'm from the U.S. & about your age I think, & don't drink now, but in college when I did, I don't remember many drinking games except quarters, & then the one where you decide as a group, on a drinking word that everyone drinks when they hear it, like in a movie or tv show.
    I was thinking while watching this & from watching Run BTS, how in Korea there seem to be so many different word oriented games with chanting & rhythm, acrostic poems, etc. I always wonder if they are games that are from childhood that everyone knows, or if they are straight up drinking games.
    I love it! I'm a big "word" person, so I think it looks fun, but I can't think of any games like that here, that people still play as young adults. We do have children's rhymes, chants, & games though, but I don't think many adults play them, until they have kids of their own & teach them to their kids.
    I could be wrong though. Maybe it was just that my family & friends weren't into games in general. Growing up, my family was mostly into church & not fun, lol. Come to think of it, my mom thought that games like Bingo, dice, & cards were "sins," so maybe it was just my childhood family?
    I would like to hear about drinking games or cultural games from other countries too!

    • @komerican-og
      @komerican-og  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      OK... Dice and cards are historically a bit shady. Going back thousands of years.............of Sins. ^^ But Bingo? Lol. I told somebody here that the clash between the rigidity of the Korean social structure and oddly passionate and outgoing Korean people innately need some way to bridge the gap. The wall between people has to come down somehow. That is why they drink so much perhaps. However, the games are not really from childhood. In Korea, your life has nothing until you get into college. The competition level for education here is insane. It was worse before. When you enter college, everything is open to you. You can drink, date whatever. Remembering back, the college students of old were oddly juvenile and naive due to lack of any experience. Especially those in good schools. So when they got into college they go to these MTs and whatnot, and they created games to play with others. It was a culture that happened naturally. They were sheltered and child like so probably made childish games. As time went by, these games became kind of a tradition and evolved and is still here today. Kids these days are too cool for some of this stuff but I gather it is still being enjoyed. Well, That is my take on it... A lot of guesses. Hope it helped.

      @@komerican-og Thank you. I enjoy your explanations!
      Also: I thought I should clarify my original comment... my childhood experience is in no way representative of America as a whole. In fact, the only thing it does represent is my mom's own "special" interpretation of her religion that we tried to abide by as children, & generally failed miserably at, lol. In her mind nearly everything was a sin, which likely includes everything I've ever said, thought, or done since birth! No pressure... 😂🙏🙄

    I don't drink so I don't really know if there's drinking games here in Mexico but I assume there must be some, just not like the korean ones, we mostly just gather to eat and drink while chatting and singing. When you mentioned the songs they sing being the same you'd have sung before it made me think it must be almost universal that the songs we all go to when in a social meeting, particularly when there's alcohol involved, tend to be the same as older generations, some songs just become staples of the culture and everyone ends up learning them. Here we have a well known selection of songs that are mostly really old and heartfelt and everyone knows and sings when heavily drunk at like 3 am.
    Also, I think when this episode came out it was not very common to see idols being so unfiltered while drinking and playing, eve nif it was not very wild. Plus it being during Covid it certainly got a lot of attention.

      My college days, people all around me were Mexican people. They would play guitar drink beer and BBQ with family. Heard many wonderful songs. I bet I heard some of them.

    I'm from Russia and i feel like we don't really play drinking games except for basics like Truth or Dare (and if you refuse to do the Dare or to tell the Truth, you need to do drink) or Beerpong (but it's american, so nothing special)

(Obvs, even if the hierarchy doesn't exist here, that guy gets easily - not sure how to put in English, I am getting the Korean word for it, lol😂😢.. "chal pijo" . Forgive me, my dear Koreans 😂😂😂

    29:29 thats S.coups, i think the reason he didnt really have a hungover is because he's one of the stronger drinkers unlike hoshi who is a lightweight. i believe woozi also avoid alcohol, maybe mostly avoid beer due to an allergic reaction (im not sure if this is true, ive just read it somewhere). other stronger drinkers might be mingyu, the8 (wine), jeonghan (i think there was a time they mentioned he likes drinking as a joke but sounds true) and dino (his habit for shaving after drinking although this was implied as a joke).
    pls correct me carats if i have the wrong information :D
