I always liked Marshmallow’s original deep voice because I thought the purpose was to broaden society’s definition of feminine. She has always been confident and feminine, and it felt nice to know her deeper voice didn’t take away from that. I liked the feminine/velvety tone she spoke in. That being said, I love the recasting of the VA and the episode dedicated to her and her backstory. Her voice still has the feminine/velvety quality it used to, just in a higher pitch, as if she has been voice training. All around one of my favorite Bob’s Burger characters so I’m happy to see what’s more to come for her.
8:00 I know this doesnt work for the broader trend of minority VAs, but I love the headcanon that this is actually just Marshmallow deciding to voice train I know time is weird in Bob's, but I have trans friends whose voices would be unrecognizable compared to six years ago 😂
I love that having so many friends in the trans community. One of my closest friends has been undergoing HRT and got top surgery a little over a year ago and the voice change was dramatic.
One of my favorite Bob's Burger moments was the exchange with Marshmallow's "Blush." line, just so simple and it cracks me up every time. "Seabird" just made her my favorite non-family character, tying with RS Rudy.
Wow this video was so informative. I rewatched bob’s burgers a little while ago, and the effect of Marshmallow’s absence was clear for me because when I watched the new open mic episode I didn’t even realize her voice was different. I did however notice how she ATE that song up though. It was fantastic!!!!
God this video made me really hope we get a Bob/Marshmallow episode one day. I never noticed until you pointed it out that they do seem to have a strong affinity for each other. I want to see an episode that explores that
I just love how queer-friendly Bob's Burgers has always been as a show. As you said some jokes in Sheesh, Cab Bob haven't aged the best but outside of that there's some amazing stuff throughout its run. Personally I want to see an episode where Marshmallow and Nat interact.
The sweetest thing to me is when the trans women talk to Tina about what it means to become a woman. Even at a surface level, there is such a mundane sense of acceptance and humanization that is quite powerful.
Marshmallow is a beautiful person, and for some reason watching her makes me feel beautiful. thanks for another vid J2C! im off work today so im snuggling with my dogs and diving in to the video. have a good thursday!
As a trans person myself I've always loved Marshmallow, new AND old voice. But, I especially love her new voice. It feels far more loyal to her character concept. More real.
My first introduction to the voice cast change for Marshmallow was Seabird, so I had no idea that there was a change of VA. It is pinpoint perfect recasting and I am so happy that Marshmallow is now played by an actual black trans woman. They really recasted with so much care.
I honestly don’t care much about recasting (Astrid from hot to train your dragon is played by a Latina woman and I don’t care) at the end of the day it’s just voices and as long as the voice actor can play the role and play it well, I don’t mind who plays who😊
Oh my god, thank you! I thought I was a total dummy for not noticing the casting change. I was just like “oh! Hey, Marshmallow!” And then I went in enjoying the episode.
Im a singer songwriter who essentially has reinvented myself as someone who plays in folk clubs with a drag look. I've got to work with other folk singer/songwriter/drag queens and this episode really made me feel seen. My parents don't seem to come to my shows anymore and I really hope they do.
Something missed about the mannequin episode is that Marshmallow isn't just a good ice skater, she knew the mannequin was on display at the sex shop. She has visited that shop enough times that she recognized the mannequin lmao.
I feel like the way her voice has changed is actually kinda authentic to her character a bit. A lot of transgender people it takes them some time to really find their new selves. That looks different for everyone. It’s actually pretty common for transgender people to change their voices over time as they transition and become more comfortable in their new identity..
Used to be in a theater company with Jari!!! We’ve lost touch over the years, as she was leaving as I was joining so we were never super duper close. Amazing to see her going on to great things. ♥️♥️♥️
Bro how in the world have you made me legitimately tear up and cry over multiple bobs burgers videos??? I love this show, so much, and idk what it is about your evaluations of the show but damn, they hit me right in the feels
Next to Marshmallow, Rudy, & Jimmy Pesto’s return, I feel like we’re entering a golden age in terms of fleshing out the side cast & giving them their own spotlights. Makes me wonder who they’ll do next.
hearing the actor’s words at the end got me in tears. once was this character that wasn’t portrayed the best, here reborn with a trans actress in tow. ive been fighting for my rights for so long that i forget that we actually do have progress.
I always liked that they didn't feel the need to give Bob and Marshmallow a backstory. It plays into the casualness and complete ease with each other. I love that their friendship just IS. (That said, i love that she's getting more screentime and wouldnt say no to their friendship being developed either!) Bob being so chill with his sexuality and the LGBTQ+ community is one of my favourite parts of him ("I'm straight, I'm...mostly straight"). Yari Jones and Marshmallow are so beautiful ❤
I think even ‘Sheesh Cab Bob’ is surprisingly tolerant for the time it came out, albeit still not perfect. I can totally imagine an alternate version of that episode where the reveal that the women he’s driving are trans would lead to Bob reacting negatively or the episode’s whole gag running on the idea that Bob is completely oblivious to them being trans and gets freaked out when he learns the truth. It’s really refreshing to see them just have Bob immediately figure it out and just kinda be like ‘ah okay!’ and move on from it rather than go for the easy punchline. That’s not to say they DONT still have some slightly transphobic jokes in that episode, but I still feel Bob’s Burgers handled the topic much better than most other shows at the time
I legit went "Oh hey, Marshmallow!" when she appeared in that talent show ep. I had missed her on my screen and it was so nice to see her again! I've loved her since she was first introduced, she truly is iconic.
So, unlike trans guys who take testosterone, estrogen doesn't change the vocal cords, and it's not uncommon for trans women to do vocal training to change how their voices sound. In-universe, Marshmallow could have just been doing that. The same as how the fans hand-wave Miss Labonz's voice change by justifying it as her smoking habit wearing on her voice box. Anyway, I love this show so much, and I love that even 15 seasons in, they're able to keep things fresh.
i like that it’s not explored in a “meaningful way” bc they’re just friends. he’s not acting like some kind of savior ally or learning a big lesson from her, they’re just friends period
I really loved Marshmallows VA's singing of the seabird song 😢❤ - I know we got a 1 min of that cover, but I wish we were able to get the full song tbh 🎶 I love the bass n how her voice sings the song, we need a full version!!!😭
It definitely makes sense that Bob loves having her around for the same reason he's happily married to Linda, since he loves surrounding himself with people who aren't afraid of express themselves and by proxy take him our of his comfort zone. And as for Marshmallow, if I had someone who supported and unequivocally respected me as much as Bob does to her, I would also hold them in the highest esteem of my friends
This show is so great because it manges to be funny without being mean spirited or relaying on dated tropes. So sick of the family that barely can stand each other. Bob and his family deeply love and care for each other and know each and everyone will be there during the best and the darkest of times. Their love and kindness stretches out to their friends and other relationships. As a parent of a 5 year old I strive to be like Bob both with my daughter and with my wife. They are fantastic role models of how to be accepting and understanding
I cry so hard when the kids stand up for each other/support each other. Like when Tina went to Louise's poem reading and more recently when Louise planned the murder mystery night for Gene 😭
Finally a video about marshmallow! One of the best BB’s characters. Her performance in the latest episode gave me literal goosebumps, just as emotional as the Rudy episode. I really wish they’d incorporate her character more

I posted in a Bob’a Burgers Facebook group that I love Marshmallow’s new voice because it sounds more realistic and less stereotypical and people got SO mad at me lol
her voice changing is actually amazing for many reasons 1. a trans woman playing a trans woman is a great thing simce we need more lgbtq+ actors and characters 2. her voice sounding more feminine can easily be explained as HRT 3. i adore this character so much along with the show
7:53 100% I’m all for missy being voiced by a woman of colour but I wish it was closer to OG Missy but in marshmallows case I adore the more sultry tone to marshmallow
Marshmallow has been one of my favorites because she is the in your face no shame, authentic and worthy of space kinda person just like the community she represents. Someday we'll have better rep. But she has put her bricks down on the road to pave the way to that future. Thank God someone said, just throw a little Marshmallow in. Bobs is 100 percent better with her. This episode is gonna be a hard one to top. But bobs has been consistent with great content especially since the movie came out. It felt like Marshmallows debut too. New voice (actress) new outfits, new veiw in her life. To the more she always had the potential to be. I'm so glad the bobs crew made this episode. And it is so important to show trans people being human beings. Not just trans representation, trans humanization. They just wanna sing their song on the stage too. I love taking that moment for Marshmallow. Maybe we can someday take that moment for our brothers and sisters in the trans community too.
This part of the reason that I like Bob's Burgers and its sister shows. Bob isn't overly religious or homophobic, and that makes him feel more real and relatable to me. The Simpsons literally had an entire episode in Season 8 dedicated to Homer overcoming his own homophobia and Family Guy constantly makes offensive jokes about LGBTQ people. 🧐
The Simpsons've more than 1 good episode, like that one where Smithers is fully out of the closet, Flamin' Moe's probably... something else. Family Guy just never got the right balance but at least Bruce stuck the landing.
johnny - thank you, thank you, thank you!!!! you were SO respectful and verbose in your analysis of marshmallow as a character, and that's really important as a trans person, especially with the current political horizon. thank you for being a wonderful ally and for making such delightful analysis videos!
I love that the producers of Bob's Burgers trust the audience. They know that not everything needs to be a joke, and so much of the humor comes from the characters being relatable.
I love the voice honestly. It's like Marshmallow has been working on herself, her voice and how she wants to be perceived. She's always been a delight and I'm so excited to see more of her in the show and what they do with our beautiful girl
The voice change after so long also just makes sense for many trans people, to me it just sounds like marshmallow has done some voice training to sound higher :)
You know I've probably seen more of Johnny's videos about Bob's Burgers than actual episodes of the show, but this might have made me wanna start from the beginning again. Amazing video!
What I also loved about the latest episode is how with the fire marshal, you THINK they’re gonna do that trope where her leverage is being his secret fetish or affair that he’d be embarrassed to have exposed, but it’s not that. Her leverage over the fire marshall is something embarrassing that HE did, that’s embarrassing because of HIS profession, and it has nothing to do with Marshmallow being trans, but her involvement that she was who saved him is totally in character.
Hahahahaha I love it when Johnny talks about Bob burgers, I’ve never liked the show (I was 12, sue me) and never really got into BUT after binge watching so many of these, 23 now and started watching Bobs burgers because of these, and I’m loving the show💀💀💀
my crack headcanon is that offscreen, marshmallow helped bob learn more about the lgbt community when he realized he was bisexual and now they have a close relationship built on something we just didn’t see LMAO
I haven’t seen the new episode yet so I had no idea about the voice change. She sounds great! Honestly, just sounds like Marshmallow further into her transition. Hope we get even more with her, can’t wait to watch the episode!
I'm really glad Marshmallow is going to be showing up more. I don't know why I love her relationship with the family since isn't big, but I just do lol
I love them giving marshmallow bigger rolls on some episodes but I love how she is a one note character. It just adds to her greatness. She can steal a show with one or two sentences then just dips. Truly a beautiful character.
Marshmallow having a lighter voice after years of being gone sounds like shes been on estrogen and going through her full transition if anyone needs a reason why the voice change makes sense i know a bunch of you haters say theres no reason well theres one
She's so mysterious, the kind of person who has a bunch of unrelated sidequests going all at once.
So true 🤭

I love Marshmallow. She indulges in her vices, but morally, she's a positive role model, a genuine person and a caring soul
chaotic good 😂
Bob's Burgers slowly became my favorite animated show. It just gets better and better.
I do wish we got a thanksgiving episode this year instead of boogie boarding
Still can't touch King of the Hill.
@@SinEater_they are two very different shows and the peaks definitely hit the same for me from both shows, but that’s my opinion you think different and that’s cool
@@theanimeunderworld8338 ive been really having issues getting into it since the movie. I'm so far behind at this point
@@SinEater_It's surpassed it. 100% Animation Domination Big 3: Simpsons, Bob's, KOTH
8:00
I know this doesnt work for the broader trend of minority VAs, but I love the headcanon that this is actually just Marshmallow deciding to voice train
I know time is weird in Bob's, but I have trans friends whose voices would be unrecognizable compared to six years ago 😂
I like that, intentional or not, in-universe changes reflecting out of universe changes.
I love that having so many friends in the trans community. One of my closest friends has been undergoing HRT and got top surgery a little over a year ago and the voice change was dramatic.
yeah, i was thinking this could be *easily* explained by voice training or just changes from HRT affecting her voice
@@irishrunner27Probably training. MTF hormone therapy doesn’t affect the voice.
I'm imagining her training arc being topped off by her dropping a weighted boa ala rock lee and just going "hey baby"
BIG agree
There’s so much to love about that episode & her character
God this video made me really hope we get a Bob/Marshmallow episode one day. I never noticed until you pointed it out that they do seem to have a strong affinity for each other. I want to see an episode that explores that
I just love how queer-friendly Bob's Burgers has always been as a show. As you said some jokes in Sheesh, Cab Bob haven't aged the best but outside of that there's some amazing stuff throughout its run.
Personally I want to see an episode where Marshmallow and Nat interact.
They should yuri it up
The sweetest thing to me is when the trans women talk to Tina about what it means to become a woman.
@@joanpalomaresjunquera2327
Wait, they changed voiceactresses in the movies? I did not know!
Im a singer songwriter who essentially has reinvented myself as someone who plays in folk clubs with a drag look. I've got to work with other folk singer/songwriter/drag queens and this episode really made me feel seen. My parents don't seem to come to my shows anymore and I really hope they do.
"and to think i gave you drugs"
i fucking love marhsmallow
Something missed about the mannequin episode is that Marshmallow isn't just a good ice skater, she knew the mannequin was on display at the sex shop. She has visited that shop enough times that she recognized the mannequin lmao.
Marshmallow has been away long enough that I didn't even notice the voice change, and I love her new her.
About the age thing, I wonder if "Marshmallow" specifically is 23. Like, she realized she was Marshmallow 23 years ago?
I never thought about it that way, I always thought it was like how we celebrated my step mom turning 39 for the 21st time. 🎉
I feel like the way her voice has changed is actually kinda authentic to her character a bit. A lot of transgender people it takes them some time to really find their new selves. That looks different for everyone. It’s actually pretty common for transgender people to change their voices over time as they transition and become more comfortable in their new identity..
i love marshmallow so much
Used to be in a theater company with Jari!!! We’ve lost touch over the years, as she was leaving as I was joining so we were never super duper close. Amazing to see her going on to great things. ♥️♥️♥️
I like that they grew apart just because Matshmallow grew up and they moved apart. They didnt say anything to suggest that they disowned her.
Who would dare lose a connection to Marshmellow. They are proud to have her 😢
Bro how in the world have you made me legitimately tear up and cry over multiple bobs burgers videos??? I love this show, so much, and idk what it is about your evaluations of the show but damn, they hit me right in the feels
MARSHMALLOW Nation!!! Love live our Queen!!!
Next to Marshmallow, Rudy, & Jimmy Pesto’s return, I feel like we’re entering a golden age in terms of fleshing out the side cast & giving them their own spotlights. Makes me wonder who they’ll do next.
Avid BB fan, but didn't realize Marshmallow had a voice change. I think I heard it as a "natural progression" of a voice.
hearing the actor’s words at the end got me in tears. once was this character that wasn’t portrayed the best, here reborn with a trans actress in tow. ive been fighting for my rights for so long that i forget that we actually do have progress.
I always liked that they didn't feel the need to give Bob and Marshmallow a backstory. It plays into the casualness and complete ease with each other. I love that their friendship just IS. (That said, i love that she's getting more screentime and wouldnt say no to their friendship being developed either!)
Bob being so chill with his sexuality and the LGBTQ+ community is one of my favourite parts of him ("I'm straight, I'm...mostly straight").
13:44 I feel safe with marshmallow in her hands you can tell yari loves her as much as we all do
So, unlike trans guys who take testosterone, estrogen doesn't change the vocal cords, and it's not uncommon for trans women to do vocal training to change how their voices sound.
9:14 Honestly Bob's Burgers fans have shown to be so much better in every way than Simpsons "fans"
I really loved Marshmallows VA's singing of the seabird song 😢❤ - I know we got a 1 min of that cover, but I wish we were able to get the full song tbh 🎶
I love the bass n how her voice sings the song, we need a full version!!!😭
Marshmallow makes every Bob's Burgers appearance into a better episode.
Bob and marshmallow are platonic soulmates for real
This episode made me weep like a baby. Such a sweet moment
I love marshmallow so much she’s so chill and seems so sweet and funny too!
Finally a video about marshmallow! One of the best BB’s characters. Her performance in the latest episode gave me literal goosebumps, just as emotional as the Rudy episode. I really wish they’d incorporate her character more
I think now that they've got a new voice actress she will likely be in the show a lot more
@@Johnny2Cellos i hope so!
😮💨 I knew it was a video over Bob's Burgers, but I still read "BB" as bareback. 😭
I love fact she give me Doctor Girlfriend from Venture bro vibs with her voice and fact she is just chaotic in nature.
Also fact she come and goes as she pleases like a mythical logical creature of the town and i find that funny that her rep.
Edit: this pop in my head after that Teddy and Marshmellow are like Bob's closes friends and Mort is under used for someone who supposed be one Bob's best friends.
I posted in a Bob’a Burgers Facebook group that I love Marshmallow’s new voice because it sounds more realistic and less stereotypical and people got SO mad at me lol
Well posting on facebook was your first mistake!
I can’t wait to see more of her in the show.
her voice changing is actually amazing for many reasons
1. a trans woman playing a trans woman is a great thing simce we need more lgbtq+ actors and characters
2. her voice sounding more feminine can easily be explained as HRT
3. i adore this character so much along with the show
Hrt doesn't effect voice in mtf trans people only ftm.
@rebeccaspratling2865 yes it can? just isn't as drastic a change....plus trans women can do vocal training too so....
7:53 100% I’m all for missy being voiced by a woman of colour but I wish it was closer to OG Missy but in marshmallows case I adore the more sultry tone to marshmallow
Marshmallow is one of the best examples of a side character thriving on little screen time
I love Marshmallow! Her new voice actress really suits the character, and she seems so lovely and passionate about her job!
Marshmallow goes where the wind takes her
omg first and please keep doing these bobs burgers side character vids ty mr duocelloooooo!!
0:30 the talent show was cancelled, Bob
The talent show was cancelled 😮💨
The talent show was cancelled, bob.. 😢
I love the voice honestly. It's like Marshmallow has been working on herself, her voice and how she wants to be perceived. She's always been a delight and I'm so excited to see more of her in the show and what they do with our beautiful girl
The fire that marshmallow carry’s the fire martial out of is the same night club fire we see talked about in the bleakening!
OH WHOA
I read through a lot of these comments and got weepy. This community is so beautiful and sweet just like Queen Marshmallow ❤
The voice change after so long also just makes sense for many trans people, to me it just sounds like marshmallow has done some voice training to sound higher :)
Yes! I love love LOVE Marshmallow's talent show song! Definitely part of my top 5 of Bob's Burgers songs!
The talent she has is so joyous and pure.
Marshmallow having older parents is not out of the realm of possibility. Having an opps baby in your 40s happens sometimes.
Hahahahaha I love it when Johnny talks about Bob burgers, I’ve never liked the show (I was 12, sue me) and never really got into BUT after binge watching so many of these, 23 now and started watching Bobs burgers because of these, and I’m loving the show💀💀💀
A lot of these newer episodes have had so much heart, I love it so much:')
my crack headcanon is that offscreen, marshmallow helped bob learn more about the lgbt community when he realized he was bisexual and now they have a close relationship built on something we just didn’t see LMAO
I adore how you're making Bob's Burgers videos!! I adore Marshmallow, as most of the audience does, and I am so excited to see more of her.
I love them giving marshmallow bigger rolls on some episodes but I love how she is a one note character. It just adds to her greatness. She can steal a show with one or two sentences then just dips. Truly a beautiful character.
Reminding me why I love this show all over again
I’m excited for the future of Bob’s Burgers in general. I’ve been loving every emotionally charged episode they’ve done in the recent seasons.
Marshmallow having a lighter voice after years of being gone sounds like shes been on estrogen and going through her full transition if anyone needs a reason why the voice change makes sense i know a bunch of you haters say theres no reason well theres one
Bob's really does have the best side characters
