Jimmy Pesto, Bob Belcher’s longtime business and restaurant rival. What a guy, right? Across the nearly 15 seasons of Bob’s Burgers, this rivalry has mostly remained a constant, and it’s been consistent. For the most part, Jimmy and Bob share a pretty specific, surface level dynamic. HOWEVER, thanks to some… specific real world events, Jimmy Pesto temporarily disappeared from Bob’s Burgers for a few YEARS. And, despite the more surface level aspects of his personality and rivalry with Bob, if you look a little deeper, he’s kind of a sad figure. A man who desperately wants to be something he isn’t, whose only recourse is to gloat at a struggling burger restaurant across the street. So today, let’s dive deep and look at the DOWNFALL of Jimmy Pesto.

@13:49 it was an investment in art. Bob sucks at business. Bob’s decor, outside view reminds me of the neutral planet from Futurama. It’s not exciting. And Bob won’t like people coming in for the looks. For the mouth and stomach to experience the food, you need the eyes to direct the feet in. Also with other characters, will we ever see that 1 woman Linda always talks to, or why is there no pictures of Bob’s mom

The brilliance of Pesto is the fact that he is a loser. Bob isn’t being out competed by the worlds best, but by a loser.
What's even better is that he purposely gets under bob's skin and it WORKS EVERY TIME
They’re foils. One is a true artist, struggling to get by and the other one is a con artist a charlatan that sells an experience in his restaurant he knows his food isn’t as good as Bobs

@thestrangah9690 I think that episode is what made me realise that Bob is delusional asl.
In order for people to taste and appreciate the good food you serve enough to keep coming back, YOU have to convince THEM to come into your restaurant at first somehow. People do that by having a nice exterior or a shtick that draws any passerby in (like a tiki theme, or the secret underground restaurant), by having small events that people want to partake in (like Jimmy Pesto), or by an online presence that might, perhaps, be strengthened when your restaurant has historical significance that is backed by an actual historian who even gave you a plaque to display outside.
But Bob doesn't do any of that, he insults the customers that come in when he has a nice decor and insults the ones that don't come in when he has a bad review. Refuses to jazz the place up but somehow still fantasises about one day having a successful restaurant.

Hugo would never open a restaurant. If there's a character around as pathetic as Jimmy, it would be Hugo, so he needs that lawful duty of being a health inspector to give him that sense of power and control he doesn't have anywhere else in his life. Though, the show did present him as providing an important service and humbling Bob in the process.

The surname Poplopovich is probably not Greek BTW. Vich implies Baltic. And Popovich is a common Baltic last name and adding a "lop" in there wouldn't be too far fetched. So probably Serbian, Croatian, Bosnian, etc.

Slavic, not Baltic. First thing that comes to mind is a folk hero of Kievian Rus who, as the name implies, was indeed a son of a priest.

@@Enbionic_Titan I'll try to explain without being weirdly aggressive like some TH-cam commenters, the spelling is all wrong for it to be Polish, you wouldn't see a "ch" that is pronounced the same as it is in English in a Polish name, it would be spelled with a "cz", which makes a "chuh" sound in Polish. "Che" is a common letter in most, if not all Slavic languages that use the Cyrillic alphabet like Serbian, Bulgarian, Russian, Ukrainian, etc, and it's often transliterated to "ch", so somewhere in the Baltics or some other Slavic country besides Poland sounds more likely.
Granted, it could be anglicized I guess, but it still sounds more like names from the countries the previous commenters have said.

I always wanted to see an episode that features Mrs. Pesto. We've never officially seen or met her in person before on the show but through dialogues on the show she's around and her and Jimmy are clearly divorced and shared custody of the kids. I'd love to see an episode where she shows up just to get a full layout of her character and see why she left Jimmy.
Would’ve been an easy way to replace Jimmy, too, if they so chose.

The difference between Jimmy and Bob is that Bob will fail many times as a business owner, but at the end of the day he has a loving wife and kids along with him.
Jimmy Pesto barely has a relationship with his children and God knows what happened to his wife.
Yeah it basically like that one episode of Spongebob where the character challenges Neptune to a Fry Off.
Like he failed in producing enough Krabby Patties to feed an entire stadium (he is going against a god after all), but ended up winning due to his one patty made being so good due to the amount of love he put into making it.
I think that is the best symbolism to the contrast of Bob and Jimmy . . . I just realized the coincidence that I compared Sponebob to Bob Beltcher who both happen to be passionate burger men named Bob

I honestly think that’s one of the more important episodes for Bob and Jimmy so I’m also shocked he didn’t mention it. It really puts their rivalry into perspective that Jimmy, despite his seeming hatred of Bob, thinks highly enough of Bob’s food that he was willing to recommend it to the club in an attempt to boost his own chances of getting in. Perhaps that’s the real reason he constantly wants to undermine Bob’s business, he simply can’t stand the fact that Bob manages to be that much better than him
I feel like Im going insane. Ive watched Bobs Burgers sure, but Im not a devoted fan or anything. I havent thought about it in a year. Then, out of nowhere, last night I had a dream about Jimmy Pesto. About how there was a real potential storyline where he and bob reconciled after bob had a serious injury, and Jimmy started turning into a reluctant friend.
I woke up, looked up Jimmy pesto, learned about some of this, and said 'dang thats weird'.

I've had the perfect ending to Bob and Jimmy in my head since nearly the beginning. They would come together to defeat a mutual threat and afterwards they would have a conversation, talking about how hard the restaurant business is, complete with telling stories and comparing notes, when Jimmy lets slip that hes 200k in debt. The episode ends with Bob cheering that hes "Just broke" and not in debt
always hated Jimmy's character and what he brought out in Bob. was so glad he was gone for the time and hoping the rivalry is done or calms down a bit if he returns again.

If you count Trev as a Pesto, the Belchers have two boys and three girls voiced by four men and a Woman, and the Pesto's are all men voiced by three men and two women.
They could have made some hilarious jokes about Jimmy being arrested, but I understand why they probably didn’t want to draw the real life comparison

A pizza ball pit sounds like a torture device. When you eat pizza rolls, you have to constantly juggle them inside your mouth to avoid getting burned. When you're IN a pizza ball pit, YOU have to constantly move around to avoid said burns.

@@Johnny2CellosI have watched it recently. I’m 4 seasons in. It’s really great and the cast is really likeable. Like the characters in Bobs burgers. It completely flew under my radar but definitely believe it should be given a watch. Also they into theme is really catchy.

I’m all for some Bob’s Burgers videos. After a while, I was starting to think they were just going to retire Jimmy Pesto entirely until he came back with a new voice. Eric Bauza is one of the best voice actors out there.

I love how much character the side characters have in Bob's Burger. Even one-off characters come off as real with their own personal lives and traits. The fact that not only does Jimmy Pesto but Trev have actual depth to them is crazy. They have some of the best world building in adult (comedy) animation

The Bob/Jimmy rivalry was always one of my favorite parts of the show, especially with the little nuances such as how nobody actually likes him outside of his business. (I recall Hugo saying he was a good friend, but I don't think that's ever followed up on)

Poplopovich like fischoeder is. Ot a real last name. But it is definitely Slavic in origin. It would roughly translate to "son of the theif priest" or son of the fake priest maybe?
Fischoeder for anyone curious if real would be germanic and would likely be most common in southern Germany or even Austria. It would likely mean either wealthy fish merchant or someone who hunts fish with a spear.

Thank you so much for taking my suggestion/request to do more Bob’s Burgers, Johnny! I agree with everything you said about Jimmy here! Especially the nuances about the character that not a lot of people might pick up on. His insecurities should obvious but aren’t always. It’s still hard to believe that the original actor stormed the capital like he did crazy the way people can make such questionable personal decisions.

Some of our stereotypes of Italians I think are based specifically on stereotypes of Sicilians. Sicily has somewhat more Greek and a trace of Moorish ancestry than the rest of Italy. (Which I believe Spike Lee misunderstood as "Black" but my understanding was the Moors in Sicily were more like Arab Muslims.)
my roommate in college took a dna test once and she was something like 99% italian, she's white as snow with red hair, so. Phenotypes are weird. I think maybe it depends on which part of Italy? Looking at a genetics map of Italy is wacky. Most of them are haplo R1b so your hunch is right, tho.

If I had a nickel for times Eric Bauza replaced a controversial actor in an adult cartoon. I'd have two nickels, which isn't a lot but it's weird that it happened twice.
When I read that Jay Johnston was involved in the insurrection, I had 2 thoughts, 1.) Sounds just like something Jimmy Pesto would do. 2.) I hope the show fires him since it's unlikely he'll be held accountable for his actions in any other way
So one fun thing with the voice acting in the show and Jimmy Pesto: He has this rivalry with Bob where they hate each other. But Bob's voice actor (H. Jon Benjamin) does Jimmy Jr's voice too. At least I'm pretty sure. So it's like H. Jon Benjamin plays the two people who hate Jimmy Pesto the most in the show. I'm pretty sure Jimmy's ex-wife hates him even more than anyone who's actually been on the show.

Too bad you didn't mention the Season 11episode Yachty or Nice, where Jimmy recommended Bob to the organizer of the event because he genuinely thinks his burgers are good. There wasn't even a catch! Jimmy did this for Bob despite all of their personal issues.

I still think it's crazy that Jimmy Pesto is an asshole on the show, and in real life, his first voice actor is way worse.

For whatever it’s worth, I don’t think South Park is avoiding a contentious election. They way I heard them word it was something along the lines that they don’t think those episodes age well and they don’t have anything left to say about Trump

Fuckin loved Jimmy as a character. Genuinely such a great foil for Bob, and though I don’t remember MANY specific instances in which Pesto was made to be empathized with, knowing the writing staff I always assumed they wanted us to feel bad for him. He’s a real guy. He’s someone we all know. And that’s sad as hell. He’s a man who obviously lost whatever grasp he had on himself when his family fell apart.
I'm surprised you didn't mention the episode where Trev asks Bob to deliver medicine to Jimmy. That was one of the few moments Bob and Jimmy had a heart to heart at the end of the episode

You know, Jay Johnston, like a lot of people, was manipulated by a con man. I think how aware of that fact he is seen to be by the judge will be the main factor that has the most influence on how long his sentence is. That, and how much or little of the actual violence he participated in. Like if it's not much violence, he was just there, and he's showing contrition and made efforts to make amends, then any decent judge would be persuaded to show leniency. We're all flawed, we most of us will get talked into some dumb stuff we'll regret one day. I don't think our lives ought to be defined by our worst days, if we are trying to do better afterwards. I'd like to see an IRL and on screen Jimmy Pesto redemption arc. Think of how unifying something like that could be. Not to extremists on either side, but to the huge group of people around the middle who just want a calmer, saner world to live in, without the crazy ****.
