    I was just going to screw the 2x8 into the wall, but the French cleat seems stronger and more stable. Building one for my nearly 6’ fourteen year old son. Thanks for the video. I am add a desk and storage underneath. Loved the music

    That looks pretty nice! One thing I'll mention, not that it'll help since it's been a while since you made this, is that beds raised up off the floor are required to have a safety rail around the sides so someone doesn't fall out, in order to be legal. I'm a professional woodworker (a customer referred me to your video because she liked the French cleats you used) and this is a big liability for me, but it's still a good idea even if it's just for yourself.

    How long was this 3 Hour project? As a master builder, This was great, but... here it goes!! LOL I have built decks around pools, 8 foot tall decks off of houses and on and on. This is just a deck. I am doing a garage conversion into a big kids off grid Bungalow for two boys. I Divided the garage into two seperate Spaces. I am putting in a queen size platform bed with cables. Then doing 4 step ladder, Shelves up top hext to the bed on both sides. My finished space is going to be 77 inches wide. The beds are 60 inches wide and so that just leavves us with 8.5 inches on each side of the bed. This design is simply for looks with cables, plus they are younger boys and can swing on them like kids do , I am sure!! haha I will make sure they are GOOD to go!!! Maybe!!! Anyway, I Stripped the garage on the outside and replaced windows, installed two front doors, 2 doggy doors, and framed the inside divideing wall, and had a electrician put in the electric everywhere needed. This is just a storage shed, right??? Thats right, hate to be accused of doing something that is not!!! Luxury Storage! ha Anyway, This book is getting long. Must be 2 minutes by now. Soooo Great Job, Keep having fun!! I am gifting these Kids with a early Christmas Present with their own space!! People need to build taller garages, so we can really have some fun though!! 8 Foot ceiling is just too low for the tiny Bungalow but, it will do just fine, I am sure. BTW... if I was racing to build the bunk bed with simple cables, I truely believe I could do it in ..... 1 hour. Impact Gun and Carraige bolts for the industal look, Nail Gun for the Framing and a PLAN OF ACTION.... This Marine Corps Vet with 30 years in Building is still having fun!! Sometimes!!!! This project is one of the most enjoyable projects to be working on. Peace and have a the best day of your life. GREAT JOB, KEEP HAVING FUN!!! LMK IF YOU NEED ANY HELP OR QUESTIONS EVER IN YOUR LIFE. LOL

      Local Tradesman,
      You're right... that was one of the longest comments ever. No worries though. If I remember correctly, I built it all on one Saturday, except maybe the cable part. I had to borrow the crimping tool from work.
      Sounds like your build is going to be awesome and the boys will love it.
      Thanks for watching and take care.

    You could have made it wider to walk around and be safer.
    Was wondering why you needed the wire. The ladder is all the support you need.
    I have always wanted to make one but wanted to put steps instead of ladder. Looks like fun.

    • @jeremyedwards5950
      @jeremyedwards5950  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Eva,
      I couldn't make it wider due to the small room. The cable was my insurance policy for my wild son who tends to thrash things. Thanks for watching and take care now.

  • @jonathantamm9202
    @jonathantamm9202 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    With the ladder supporting the corner the cable is not needed and is the only thing stopping the bed being removed with crimps on the cable, with the french cleats it may as well be just screwed to the 2 walls with the same number of screws.
    I like the bed but with no ladder the cable would be needed but the cable needs to be cut to remove the bed leaving the cleats and i bolt or removing them and filling and painting the holes.

    I think the French Cleat would be stronger screwed into the larger side rails versus the top layer of pieces but I can see that your way makes it flush to the top of the bed...no room for things to fall in the crevices.

    So the cleats are attached to the top of the bunk? So the support planks are pretty much held on with vertical screws. Wouldn't this reduce the overall load distribution??
    And why even do the cleats if this isnt regularly moved in some way. You are staying with cables crimped down which would mean it is pretty permanent. So you could have just screwed in the bottom planks directly into side walls for support and ended up with same ease of removability and better load performance.
    It would be good to know the benefits for this system and maybe get an update of how it held up with use.

    You should edit this to give commentary. Turn it into an instructional video. It is awesome to see you to make something from nothing. But for people like me, who have never even built a house outta popcycle sticks as a kid, we could use instructions. Like what type of wood, measurements, tools. ect.
    This is a great video. I am sharing a tiny room with my daughter, who is 2 months shy of turning 14. Was looking at bunk beds, when I had an epiphany that if I could figure out how to build a loft, she could have some privacy. I am my 86 year old grandfathers primary care giver, so even if I could afford to move to a more suitable place, I couldn't. I would however, like to get the maximum use out of what little space that I do have.

    • @jeremyedwards5950
      @jeremyedwards5950  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Sonya,
      Thank you for your kind words and for watching. I'm not big on verbal instructions in my videos, nor do I feel like I have the time to add all the measurements. I seem to just make things fit. I simply started with the measurements of the mattress, then cut and fit the wood accordingly. My recommendation is to find the most inexpensive wood (but still structurely sound) and give it a go. As I said in the end of the video, "yep, you can do it too".
      Take care now.

    Great job. Just couple questions. Why the cable if ladder is there? Which carries the majority of the weight? Why no side rails? Don't get me wrong I like it just think it can be improved upon just a bit more with some side rails

    • @jeremyedwards5950
      @jeremyedwards5950  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you read the other comments you would see my answer to all of those questions. But here you go anyway. Cable because it is a wild boy who climbs all over it. No rails because how many times do you fall off your bed? Rails we're not necessary. The boy grew up and we've moved since then. The bed no longer exists. Thanks for watching and take care now.
