  • We bought a house without ever looking at it in person! We wanted to try house hacking, so we bought a duplex in a city that we had never visited. If you're thinking about buying a house or investment property sight unseen, then I hope you'll watch this video for some words of wisdom from someone who went through the home buying process.

    Duplexes have practically taken over Australia. I didn't know they have them in US aswell!

      Duplexes are a good use of space. :) We definitely have duplexes in the US, but some cities have more than others. Some areas have zoning laws restricting the construction of anything that's not a single family home, so duplexes are not as prominent in those areas. In the area where I'm living right now, they seem to be somewhat popular, along with triplexes and 4plexes.

    My neighbors bought their house site unseen. Unfortunately, they ended up moving back to Seattle 18 months later. Not because they didn't have wonderful neighbors 😂, but their jobs weren't as fulfilling and their daughter hated school (didn't help moving in spring 2020 and it was hard to make friends). New owners also bought site unseen! Their issue is the garage doors were supposed to be 8 ft tall and realtor supposedly measured, and they are 7 ft and they can't fit their truck in their garage....the little things....

      Oh no! The little things really add up when you buy a home sight unseen! The discrepancy in garage size is so unfortunate! 😱 Even though we thought we were very attentive to details, we're still finding"little things" (like plumbing issues) even a few months after moving into the home.

    Giant cactus in the window drops?

      That's an excellent idea! I think a cactus would love the sunlight in that space. I need to find a gentle cactus so it doesn't stab people if they fall :) 🌵

    I didn't even know there was a buyer's agent vs sellers agent! I wonder if we have these distinct agents in Aus ?

    • @mariaworkman
      @mariaworkman  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I had to look this up, and it seems like buyer's agents are uncommon in Australia because buyers usually represent themselves during the house search/transaction. Also, it sounds like (if i understood correctly) in Australia, a buyer needs to cover a buyer's agent's commission whereas in the US, the buyer's agents commission comes is paid for by the seller, as a percentage of the home's selling price.

      @@mariaworkman yeah I think all the agents are more like selling agents. The agent gets a commission of the sale price. But yes usually it's a matter of do your own due diligence because really the agent is going to tell you whatever white lie to sell the property and make it sound like butterflies and roses haha

    Young and stupid. So, to "save time" and "The expense of traveling", you instead bought the biggest [by far] purchase of your life sight unseen. That's like ordering a bride from another country, when you have never even met before, and she doesn't speak your language...... Extremely stupid behavior. "He warned us the house was really dirty"...... and you ignored the warning.

      I don't understand why you need to be negative - she is sharing her experience. To come on here and call someone stupid is....stupid. LOL. Chill out. And FYI, people buy houses like this A LOT. Especially when moving from one continent to another! And I'm sorry...are they still doing mail order brides? Like? What?
