  • A few months ago, my husband and I joined in on the California Exodus and left the Bay Area. There are so many reasons why people are choosing to leave California. After a long 5 years of mixed experiences, eventually, it was time to leave.

    I left California 15 years ago and I saved thousands of dollars and I'm just a working guy making middle class wages. Not only that the cost of living is so much cheaper to live in Nevada then California. The Roads are tearable as compared to Nevada and car registration is cheaper. I'm glade I moved no regrets.

    One of the biggest secrets to Phoenix's success is the insane number of people leaving California since around 2016. Many of my real estate clients are disgruntled Cali people. They mention much of what you bring up in various ways. The other big complaint (in my limited real estate world) is how hard it is to get anything done. From as big as building to as small as remodeling your kitchen. It seems to have driven people so crazy that they literally moved.

    Same for me and my wife. Greater than 50% of our income gone, CA just wasting money and not fixing anything, homeless everywhere, crime and no punishment for criminals, sales tax, property tax, etc. I have less than one year left in CA and will head to North Carolina. Your video sums up frustrations all of us are feeling. If I seen a little effort to fix problems with the state, then I would consider staying, but the politicians are going in the opposite direction. In Orange County, gas is $4.99 - $5.20, just not worth staying.

    I spent the first thirteen years of my life living in Maryland (Greenbelt). The weather absolutely sucks. I spent the next five years in the S.F. Bay Area (Redwood City, city slogan "Climate Best By Government Test". Weather too boring. Moved up to Sacramento Area for the next fifty-four years. The last five years it got too smokey. Last eighteen years I had a house overlooking the Sacramento Valley and could see 100+ miles... when the forests weren't on fire, instead only a few hundred yards in late summer and early fall. Now live on the beach in Mexico at 1/5th price it would cost just just thirty miles north across the border in San Diego.
    I had a summer job framing houses in Pacifica, just south of San Francisco, while going through college. Houses that sold for $19,995 in 1963 are now selling for $1.4 million and the houses are over sixty years old!

    I honestly think the homeless situation is worsened by the tolerance of people who I know are trying to be well meaning (but I don't think this same tolerance exists outside of CA). I moved to the bay area from a city that had lots of homeless so I did not expect to be as surprised as I was. The difference was the homeless really just kept to themselves....they didn't trespass to homes, steal, etc. like in CA. If they were to be somewhere they weren't supposed to be they wouldn't be allowed to stay long....police would certainly get involved. In CA there was someone living in our buildings garage stealing and trespassing and no one even bothered reporting it I don't think (and from what I heard I don't think police really got involved in such situations). I think it's compassion but I do think it's why the areas have gotten out of hand. The homeless have no repercussions (and I know that sounds harah but I admit I am not as compassionate). I also expected to see them in SF of course but didn't understand how they were also all over Suburban Type areas like Santa Clara. Like how did they even get there wandering around the middle of nowhere when everyone needs to drive to get anywhere?

    I'm a software engineer as well and was in San Francisco twice, in 2015 and 2019, both for Google events. In 2015, the homeless problem was bad. In 2019? WOW, WAS IT BAD. Some of the things I saw in 2019:
    * The first day there, I was in a Burger King and a woman comes in, takes off her back back, sits down, unrolls her drugs from her backpack and begins to shoot up! The cop walks up to her, she says something to him and he just walks away! Stunned, I mention this to the person taking my order who just casually looks, looks back at me and asks, "Ok, what would you like to order?"
    * Many homeless that were so strung out on drugs, they basically became zombies. I was so stunned, I filmed it a few times and sent the video back to my wife.
    * "Impassable streets". It wasn't uncommon to turn to walk down a street and just "NOPE" my way out of there. Entire blocks covered with tents!
    And I'm from a big city and lived through the crack epidemic of the 80s, but even I was stunned!

Basic things I expected to be taken care of in any major US area seemed to have not made there way there. Most videos about leaving CA are heavily bias rants but yours was very fair. I'm a lifelong Californian. born and raised in the Bay Area and now live in San Diego. I tried moving back to the Bay Area in 2011 and returned to San Diego in 2013, mostly for the reasons you stated in this video. San Diego too is getting bad but it's not quite where the Bay Area is...at least not yet. While I'd love to remain in my home state, that is looking less and less likely. I've already had friends move to Oregon, Washington, Las Vegas, and Texas. I would head north if I left to WA or OR. However, Seattle has the same homeless crisis as the Bay Area. You're lucky you left when you did as gas prices are now over 5 dollars. San Diego County almost approved a mileage tax, this we would have had to pay on top of the state gas tax.

    • @mariaworkman
      @mariaworkman  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you for watching the video. I'm also happy that I left before gas prices went over 5 dollars! :O I'm sad to hear that San Diego is also getting bad. It's sad to see a city/state that we love deteriorate. Maryland was never on my list of places where I thought I would end up, but I've been pleasantly surprised by the nice people and the cleanliness (comparatively to the bay area). Every state has its own unique issues, but sometimes it's time to move on and try something new. Best of luck if you end up moving. :)

    I made this comment on another channel about California people moving away.
    "I'm a California native that moved away in 2016, and I mean native. My family has lived in the state since the late 1890s, so a long time.
    The housing prices are insane and are artificially so because of over-regulation. The state has the worst taxes of any state in the country with the exception of maybe New York. What do you get for that, poor schools, poor infrastructure maintenance, poor government, and continuing decline? There are so many other things that are wrong, but let's keep this relatively short.
    Do I miss California? For sure! I miss the great restaurants that we frequented, but a lot of those places have gone under because of the pandemic, the Pacific Dining Car in downtown LA, gone quite possibly never to return! I miss the weather, pretty much the same all year with slight variations during the year. I miss all of the places to go, museums, entertainment venues, the beach, the mountains, just so much to see and do there compared to where I am now. Would I move back? It wouldn't make sense to move back unless it was right. I'm 4 hours away from San Francisco and about 10 from LA by car, shorter if I fly. But it would only be for part of the year so I wouldn't be classified as a full-time resident, the taxes and penalties are just too onerous.

    Fade in Randy Newman's I Love L.A. . . ."
    The sad reality is I remember what it was like all those years ago when I was much younger. My personal opinion is the NIMBYs and the Left have ruined the state. When there was a loyal opposition, there was some form of check on the silliness seen today. But that's gone and one of the reasons we moved away as well. When the Democrats achieved a supermajority in the state government, we knew there would be no end to stupid policy decisions, continuous tax, and fee increases, and no accountability.

      The third world country argument is too true. Albeit it is nothing to do with its politics, rather the overpopulation. Any place with overpopulation will suffer higher property costs, higher costs for goods and services, which causes a long chain of issues.
      In places like india for example, the major cities ares are so expensive that literaly vice presidents of companies, and high up managers live in places that would be considered extreme small and not suitable for raising a family in other areas. but when you go out to their smaller cities and out in the country, the while the cost of living is still more expensive than in most places in the US, it is still vastly more manageable than california.

    I was going to leave but my big tech employer said they would lower my salary. So I just moved to Fresno California (Tower District) and now save big with remote tech work and remote grad school and sometimes go to Quail State rooftop Bar in Downtown Fresno or the Brewery District. So far a year and few months in best decision ever I was going to rent at these apartments called "the Row" or buy a home in the new Riverstone area but fell in love with a bungalow in Fresno's Tower District area. Cheaper mortgage and no reduced Californian Salary.

    California's taxes are NOT the highest in the country; only the top brackets are the highest. Tax receipts by the state is roughly in the middle nationally. Low income earners pay much less than higher income. In fact California government spending is also not nearly the highest in the country per capita; it's also roughly in the middle. Also the idea that you're "not getting paid" half the time you work is silly. If nobody paid any taxes the roads you complain about in the later part of your video would never get fixed. Street lights wouldn't work. There would be no police or firefighters or public schools. Taxes aren't just getting taken away, they go to pay for things that make civilization work. And, see above, California is not spending much more than any other state per capita.
    Homelessness is a problem, caused partly by NIMBY zoning which needs to change. But the high housing prices are driven by the fact that California is so successful economically. California needs to build more housing but these problems are due to insufficient building and too much resistance to development by local zoning boards. The state is working to change these policies as recent zoning laws have gone into effect.
    The wildfires are real and mostly due to climate change. A long term problem which needs more attention.
    Finally: your house may be cheaper out there but your property taxes are likely way higher.

  • @salamander5318
    @salamander5318 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Texas has higher combined taxes than California for working and middle class people so stop your lies. Don't gaslight people into thinking that the top marginal state income tax rate and an average person's effective state income tax rate is the same thing.

    • @CJ-re7bx
      @CJ-re7bx 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I highly doubt that someone in the tech field in the Bay Area is going to pay less taxes than someone in TX. There is no income tax in TX, compared with the highest income taxes in the country CA. Also, sure, the property tax rate in TX is double that of CA, but the houses themselves cost 1/2 to 1/3 the amount, meaning you end up paying about the same in property taxes.

    • @JBoy340a
      @JBoy340a 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      True. And in Texas, they reassess home taxes every couple of years and base them on what houses in your neighborhood sell for. So if your neighbor sells their house for a bunch, your property taxes get raised even though their sale put $0.00 in your pocket. This compounded by Texas having upward of $3.25% tax rate versus fixed at CA 1.125%. And CA property taxes are based on what you bought the house for and the property tax bill can only raise about 3% in a year.
