    i love Karen's smile. Not only does it show how much fun she's having, but it also indicates how much she enjoys Carol having fun too. Her whole persona is so comfortable, welcoming, and warm. If she had wanted to, she could have overpowered Carol with her voice. She doesn't because A) she's a nice person and B) they are the guests. Hence, Karen behaves as a guest should.

    • @RitaSora
      @RitaSora 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Yes totally agree! What class Karen had backing off as a guest.She was such a huge talent at such a young age.She really could do it all.She was really funny.When I was a kid I just loved their guest appearances and The Carpenters t.v. Specials.I knew Karen was going to make me laugh.I was so fascinated by her and still am.

      🤣🤣 Have you ever heard Carol Burnett sing "Shy"? I think she can hold her own.

    • @musicvox4946
      @musicvox4946 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I appreciate your sentiment, but it really goes beyond that musically speaking. When ensemble singing, (two or more voices) maintaining proper vocal balance is paramount to serving the song. Only a lead voice would be louder, background softer. Here, all three are perfectly balanced within the medley, changing their dynamics as dictated by the songs and the parts they are singing. By the way, Carol has a very pretty and powerful voice as well. Best, Ed

      @henry12397 Well Ok, you're right. They were on the Ed Sullivan show twice in 1970: 10/18/70 and 11/13/70. I MUST SEE THOSE!!! @nickxero2740Before throwing in your two cents worth of armchair criticism, you might consider looking at yourselves in the mirror. It is easy to put others down or belittle them when you hide behind fake names. Comments like yours contributed to Karen's breakdown.
      Since we like to critique other people's works, here is mine. Karen's voice can't be replicated and still stands out among her contemporaries, either in studios or on stages. So, before opening up your mouths and sticking your feet in them, you might rethink. 😎

      are you kidding me? To sing the duet and harmony parts that he sang at a superstar level you need to nail the pitches with an extreme degree of precision. Richard and Karen are one of the very best duet teams in the business, with others being Lennon and McCartney, Simon and Garfunkle, The Righteous Brothers, Donny & Marie, the girls from ABBA. As incredible as are all those acts, legit, Richard and Karen top them all. Carpenters were a killer live act...they could nail those vocals live no sweat. That's what they do.

Chill bumps crawling all over my body ever since Karen solos her first note and thereafter for the entire video and still now....and left in tears at the excellence of this. The Carpenters did not tend to do TV live but this really seems live. If it's not they did a convincing job. I'm a "Carpenters" fan, but I have to say, I'm really a Richard Carpenter fan more than I'm a Karen Carpenter fan. He is fantastic in this video, as is Carol as well. Of course we know Karen is one of the top best female pop vocalists in recorded history, "one of," as in "one of the top three" maybe.

    Yes, Richard was/is a man of MANY talents: songwriter, pianist, conductor/arranger, and record producer. But this was a rare & worthy treat for us to be entertained by his vocal knacks which he's been blessed with as well. I'm glad his mic was set where it was. Also gotta admit, he never looked better than he did back then when they were in their prime of their careers - young, fresh, and perky.

    I know I've said it before but The Carpenters really should have recorded this song. It suits their voices perfectly! 🤩

    This is pure gold- live, raw unproduced studio mike vocals- rare for this group.

    It's a Paul Williams/Roger Nichols medley. Good stuff!

    wow that was awesome, Paul Williams medley, but Carpenters and Carol Burnett are a version of Three Dog Night from an alternate dimension trapped in the twilight zone. they should have got in space suits with david bowie haircuts hehe

    @justinjameswest This was one of a few shows where TV didn't mishandle them, they were treated very well on the Carol Burnett show & even got their own directors chairs.

      yes and probably because Carol really understood , respected and appreciated them. On other shows they were patronized and made to do silly things.

    I'll never forgive Richard Carpenter for rejecting a studio recording of "Old Fashioned Love Song". As is already known, this song was MADE for them. It is a shame this is the only time we'll hear them sing it - and barely at that! Three Dog Night just doesn't have "it".

      YangPanang123 ~ I'm sorry,But I completely disagree...Chuck Negron singing "Old Fashioned Love Song" with "Three Dog Night", is the definitive version...They have "IT" in truckloads!...

      They recorded a much better song, and one even more perfect for them right around the same time. That song was "Rainy Day and Mondays", one of their best. Both songs were written by Paul Williams and Roger Nichols. If it came down to a choice between the two of them, I think Richard made the right one.

      so do I but we're in the minority. Richard realized he's not a great lead singer and at first he realized that Karen was a great lead singer so he wisely took a back seat to her and allowed "the better man to win," but slowly he realized that Karen was one of the greatest pop vocalists ever and she was a real diamond that needed to be allowed to shine brightly.
